Qatar Academy celebrates the first year of its "School Without Walls" program
DOHA Qatar Academy, at the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, is celebrating the success of this year's School Without Walls, a new program which extends education beyond the school's boundaries to the northern coastline of Qatar to offer students a new learning experience. "We take groups of students away from school and do some experiential learning in the field so they can associate what we do in the class with real life situations," Paul Rimmer, teacher at Qatar Academy, said. The School Without Walls took students on three-day trips to the beaches of Huweila, where students followed a daily itinerary that ensured a broad and balanced mix of academic, physical, artistic, cultural and social activities to develop their trans-disciplinary skills. "The idea of experiential learning is not new to international schools abroad. It's new to Qatar Academy," Todd Haines, geography teacher at the Qatar Academy, explained. "We built on the philosophy that exists and designed something specific for our school." The experiential curriculum this year focused on geography and science, and specifically, the study of rocks and oceans.

    History
Main article: History of Qatar Qatar has become one of the newer emirates in the Arabian Peninsula . After domination by Persians for thousands of years and more recently by Bahrain , by the Ottoman Turks , and by the British , Qatar became an independent state on September 3 . Unlike most nearby emirates, Qatar declined to become part of either the United Arab Emirates or of Saudi Arabia Although the peninsular land mass that makes up Qatar has sustained humans for thousands of years, for the bulk of its history the arid climate fostered only short-term settlements by nomadic tribes. Clans such as the

A RTS AND L ITERATURE Q atar inherited a Bedouin culture, and its influence is still evident in Qatari society. Because they were nomads, the Bedouin developed a culture based on poetry, song and dance, rather than on buildings and fine art. A t weddings and other celebrations, folk singers, dancers and musicians perform traditional music, and storytellers recount time-honoured tales. Traditional dances are performed on Friday afternoons during the summer months in Doha. In one of the traditional dances, the ayyalah , the performers pretend to be fighting a battle. Two rows of dancers, facing each other, wave sticks or swords as they move to the beat of the drums. Each row sings challenges to the opposite side to the accompaniment of a big drum (al-ras) , three smaller drums, tambourines and copper cymbals. Ayyalah drummers use sticks of palm wood, while other types of drum are played with the hands. Q ataris produce many beautiful handcrafts, including fine jewellery. Traditional Qatari jewellery includes the al mirtaesha (a gold necklace that may cover the chest down to the waist), the
