http://my.pclink.com/~dkelley/python.html
Introduction All to often when people hear the word "Python" they immediately think "Giant Killer Snake", but not all pythons grow to be giant. Of the three most commonly known species of pythons, the reticulated python (Python reticulatus) is the largest reaching twenty-five plus feet. Burmese pythons (Python molurus molurus) are a bit smaller than the reticulated reaching twenty-plus feet. Unlike their relatives, the Ball python (Python regius) only grows from three to six feet long; however, they seldom reach six feet in captivity. Most are easily tamed and reluctant to bite. A small cat could deliver a much more serious bite than adult ball python. We don't claim to be experts on Ball pythons, but we have been successful raising our six. If any of the following content helps you in caring for your own snake, please leave us a note. Ball pythons are becoming more and more popular in the pet trade. Many are imported every year; however, captive-bred snakes are becoming increasingly more popular. Even though the petstore keeper might tell you that ball pythons are easy to care for, they can be quite a handful. If you have never owned a reptile, I would suggest a boa or cornsnake to gain experience before purchasing one. If you still have your heart set on a ball python, it would be to your advantage to learn everything you can about them before bringing one home. Learning their habits will also help when deciding on a snake to purchase. It is also a good idea to have your reptile enclosure set up and ready for your new pet before bringing them home from the petstore.

The Keeping of Large Pythons
Realities and Responsibilities News from the North Bay , January 1994. Large pythons were the subject of many a news story last year due to the fact that there were at least two deaths directly attributable to them. Tragically, the deaths would not have happened had the owners of these snakes kept them safely, and responsibly, contained. The following article, by David Chiszar, Hobart M. Smith, Albert Petkus and Joseph Dougherty, was recently published in the Bulletin of the Chicago Herpetological Societ y , and represents the first clear, and accurate, account of the death that occurred July 1993: A Fatal Attack on a Teenage Boy by a Captive Burmese Python ( Python molurus bivittatus ) in Colorado
"The recent Colorado case of a human death caused by a Burmese python ( Python molurus bivittatus ; 20 July 1993) resulted in considerable sensational media coverage as well as widely varying estimates of the snake's length and weight. In the interest of scientific accuracy, we sought and received the cooperation of the Commerce City Police Department in acquiring detailed information regarding both the victim and the snake so that correct data could be placed on record.

June 3, 2004 View a Photo Gallery of U.S. Invasive Species: Go >> In February, a group of tourists at the Pa-hay-okee Overlook in Florida's Everglades National Park stumbled upon a battle between an alligator and a python. The stunned onlookers watched as the snake wrapped itself around the alligator, only to see its opponent counter by rolling over and grabbing the snake in its mouth and swimming off with the snake in its jaw. It was not the first such battle. In January of last year, a horde of tourists watched another epic contest between an alligator and a python at the park's Anhinga Trail. After more than 24 hours in the jaws of the alligator, that snake broke free and moved off into the marsh. For now, the alligators in the Florida Everglades are holding their ground against the invading snakes. But the odds may be changing. The park is being overrun with Burmese pythons, one of the world's largest snakes. These pythons can grow to be more than 20 feet (6 meters) long in their natural habitat in Southeast Asia.

White Fire Reticulated Python Last fall I received an email from a friend in Russia telling me about a new reticulated python "variation" that had hatched from a wild female. My longtime friend, Jay Brewer, of Prehistoric Pets and I have purchased these incredible animals. The snakes are white and patternless with a pale orange wash over most of the body. Parts of the head and the belly are bright, stark white. The eyes are jet black showing deep red pupils in direct light. We have named this new trait "White Fire". The heterozygous animals have the normal pattern with lighter and more intense color. These we've named "Fire". I think these snakes are the most exciting mutation to enter the market since the introduction of the original albino strain in 1999.

Jan. 15, 2005 12:00 AM Russ Johnson's pet hasn't eaten in about three months.
But that doesn't mean it's time to call the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It's breeding season for Donnie, Johnson's 17-foot-long tiger reticulated python, and he's got more pressing things on his mind than mealtime.
"Right now, he's too busy thinking about the girls," the Scottsdale resident says. "He'll probably have the girlfriend blues for another 60 days." advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd')
When it's not breeding season, Donnie gets fed every 10 days. Johnson buys frozen rabbits, which he defrosts to room temperature before feeding to Donnie. The snake will eat two small rabbits, about 9 pounds each, or a 17- or 18-pound rabbit per meal. Although the rabbit isn't alive, Donnie strikes at it as though it is, Johnson says, "squeezing the tar out of it, thinking it'll get away."
Donnie accompanies Johnson on trips to elementary schools, where children have plenty of questions about the 170-pound python.

INDIAN PYTHON
Remaining Population: Unknown Range: India
Throughout history, humans have regarded snakes with both fascination and horror. In many cultures, snakes have been symbols of evil, from the Biblical serpent in the Garden of Eden to the snake demons of Indian mythology. To the ancient Egyptians the emblem of judgment and death was a snake. Snakes are found in most habitats worldwide except in extreme northern and southern regions. Snakes come in multitudes of sizes and colors with as many varied lifestyles, from deadly King cobras whose bite can kill a human in 15 minutes, to the world's tiniest West Indies thread snakes, about the size of a pencil lead. Snakes are reptiles, the group of animals that also includes crocodiles, lizards, and turtles. The now-legless snakes evolved millions of years ago from prehistoric lizards that lived at the same time as the dinosaurs. Pythons are the most ancient type of snake; they have remnant spurs, tiny projections where their ancestors might once have had legs. Species Description and Natural History The Indian python is a highly arboreal snake, once fairly common throughout the jungles of India, Sri Lanka, and the East Indies. It can grow to a length of about 20 feet (6 m).

Pythons Gone Wild: Freed Pet Snakes Thrive In Everglades

May 23, 2004 Release from:
South Florida Sun-Sentinel FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
- As Mike Mercier walked along a boardwalk at Everglades National Park, he heard a series of loud splashes. His wife shouted for him to look, and he saw a stunning sight: A huge snake wrapped around an adult alligator. The alligator rolled over and grabbed the snake in its mouth. As Mercier ran down the boardwalk to keep up, the alligator swam off with the snake in its jaws. His photographs confirmed what he thought he saw: a Burmese python, a native of Southeast Asia and one of the largest snakes in the world. Since the mid-1990s, rangers and other employees have captured or killed 67 Burmese pythons at Everglades National Park, and sightings are becoming more frequent. Illegally released by pet owners who no longer wanted to take care of them, the snakes have begun to breed along the main park road, causing deep concern among biologists who want to protect the park's wildlife. "They're eating native birds and mammals," said Skip Snow, a park biologist in charge of reducing the python population. "They're here because of the international pet trade."

Pythons 2
Starring Billy Zabka, Dana Ashbrook and Simmone Jade MacKinnon
Directed by Lee McConnell Written by Jeff Rank SCI FI Channel Premieres Saturday, Aug. 17, at 9 p.m. ET/PT By Kathie Huddleston n Python , a 60-foot bioengineered snake gets away from its government handlers when an airplane goes down near a small mountain town and the townsfolk must band together to defeat it. In Pythons 2 , a plane goes down over Russia carrying a bigger and meaner version of the first snake. Back from the first movie is Greg Larsen (Zabka), who has gone from being a local cop to working for the CIA. Larsen hires an American ex-baseball player named Stoddard (Ashbrook) and his Russian wife, Nalia (MacKinnon), to help transport the "cargo" from a small Russian military base across the border. However, when Larsen and his team arrive, they find the base deserted and quickly discover the python is on the loose. By the time Stoddard and Nalia realize that Larsen was being less than honest with them about the cargo, they find themselves in a fight for their lives as the snake begins to pick off members of the team one by one. Things become even more complicated when they realize the acid-spewing people-chomper isn't alone. With a covert contingency plan in place to make sure the python doesn't escape, Larsen and the gang find themselves trapped in the depths of the base in a race against the clock . And when one member of the team is ordered to make sure there are no witnesses, Stoddard and Nalia realize the pythons aren't the only snakes they have to deal with.
