From My Days in Africa By Steve Van Nattan
PYTHONS Describe
A python is a very large snake with a bad reputation. It is a constrictor, which means that it has to catch its lunch without the benefit of poison. It is not a fast moving snake, so the python will lay in the grass along a game trail and hope some animal will come by which is small enough to swallow. The python has one feature which helps catch the lunch two hooks near its tail. The python will strike with its tail, unlike poisonous snakes which strike with their mouth and fangs. The python flings its tail at its prey, and if the hooks catch in the animal, the python uses them as an anchor for leverage. The python will quickly wrap itself in coils around the animal and slowly squeeze its prey until it cannot breath. The prey suffocates from lack of breath. After this, the python swallows its prey whole. This critter, unlike good boys and girls, does not cut its food into smaller bites, nor does it chew its food. The jaws of the python come unjointed so that it can open its mouth very wide. If you see a python in the zoo, you will wonder how its small mouth can open wide enough to swallow an animal. In fact, a python about 15 feet long can swallow a whole goat. Pythons can live in pretty good health by eating only once a year. They will eat more often if given the opportunity. The pythons can grow to be as long as 20 feet, though not many that long have been reported. Pythons do not stalk people. They would if they could swallow them for tiffin, but humans are too big.

Introduction Mixing two disparate disciplines like biology and computation yields extremist views and a middle ground. At one extreme, some believe that computation will ultimately spew answers to every known biological question. At the other extreme, some believe computation cannot begin to ask the right questions in molecular biology. Yet, as with all extreme views, neither of these opinions are very practical. Some problems probably cannot be solved with computation, and still other problems are ideally suited to the application of computers. As an example of the latter, in research where huge volumes of data exist, a number of tasks need to be repeated often, and there's a need to find patterns in data patterns difficult for humans to analyze because of our own limitations ¬†algorithms and computers are an invaluable aid. This article describes some common uses of bioinformatics ‚Äî the application of computer and information science to biology ‚Äand explains how Python has been of considerable use in bioinformatics. Though advocacy is not the intention of this article, it should nonetheless give Python programmers a taste of bioinformatics, and show those interested in bioinformatics how easily Python can solve substantial problems.

A huge Indian Python found in a forested area of Assam, northeast India. Family : PYTHONIDAE
Species : Python molurus molurus
Maximum Size : 6 metres References : H3 Photo thanks to : Tim Green A large snake, generally reaching up to 6 metres and in extreme cases over 9 metres, the Indian Python P. m. molurus inhabits lowland forests. It is adept at both swimming and climbing trees. As with other pythons, it kills its prey - mainly small mammals- by constriction and suffocation. The patterning comprises black-edged brown patches on a pale orange-brown to yellow-brown background. On top of the head is a distinctive lighter, forward-pointing, V-shaped marking. The Indian Python occurs in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. A related subspecies, the Burmese Python P. m. bivittatus, occurs in Burma, South China, Thailand and Indo-china with a separate distribution in parts of Indonesia.

ZOO THE zoo is one of the treasures of Johannesburg, a wonderful source of enjoyment and relaxation for locals and foreign visitors alike. It occupies sprawling grounds in central Parktown, with numerous trees, water features and beautiful walks around the various enclosures. The stars of the show are, of course, the animals and the collection is impressive, including lions, tigers, elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, sable antelope, bat-eared foxes, dolphins, polar bears and many other species.

Zoo joins study of
Africa's largest snake July 8, 2002 By Lucille Davie THE Johannesburg Zoo is taking part in a unique international programme to study and preserve one of Africa's pythons. The programme is called Flagship Species and involves animals around the world listed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites). Traditionally, a single high-profile animal is chosen for conservation. This new approach involves the preservation of diverse ecosystems but also strives to connect political, social and cultural interests to the preservation of a species and its ecosystem. The African rock python, Africa's largest snake, has been chosen by the Zoo as its Flagship Species for several reasons.

Trouble for the Tidy Bowl man
A man lassos the python lurking in his toilet. He tugs, and tugs, and tugs . . .
By LEONORA LaPETER, Times Staff Writer Published February 24, 2005 [Photo: Shannon Scavotto] With tissue paper on its head, a 6-foot African rock python is shown in Shannon Scavotto's toilet in St. Petersburg. Scavotto rigged a noose to pull the snake out. ST. PETERSBURG - It was almost 9 a.m. Tuesday and Shannon Scavotto already was running late for work when he opened the toilet to throw out a tissue. Inside was a snake as thick as a child's wrist, its diamond-shaped head sticking 10 inches out of the toilet. Scavotto, 30, grabbed his camera phone to call someone, then snapped a few shots of the snake with the tissue paper on its head.

Jacksonville Woman Cited After Snakes Escape Twice
POSTED: 3:10 pm EDT July 26, 2005 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A 55-year-old woman was issued two misdemeanor citations after her two pythons along with five monitor lizards escaped from her Southside home. Albino Burmese python The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued Michele Cuartero a criminal complaint for escaped/free roaming snakes and lizards after police responded twice in June to reports of the snakes roaming the neighborhood around her Nain Road home. On June 3, the 13-foot male albino Burmese python was returned to Robert Harwood. On June 7, the same snake got loose and was captured again. Harwood was not located and the snake was turned over to the Jacksonville Herpetological Society Reptile Rescue, where it is being kept as evidence in the case. A FWC investigator issued the criminal citations to Cuartero, the reptiles' admitted owner, on July 21. The 8-foot female python and the monitor lizards remain at large, according to FWC officials.

python, a genus of very large snakes of the family Boidae (see snakes) P. molurus, scarcely smaller, is the python or rocksnake of India and Ceylon.
http://94.1911encyclopedia.org/P/PY/PYTHON.htm
PYTHON
PYTHON , in Greek mythology, son of Gaea, an enormous serpent, said to have been produced from the mud after the flood of Deucalion. Its haunt was a cavern near Mt Parnassus. Four days after its birth it was slain by Apollo (Apollodorus i. 4), who was hence surnamed Pythius. According to Ephorus (in Strabo ix. 646), Python, surnamed Dracon (serpent), was a brigand near Delphi. The python in reality represents the pestilential vapours rising from stagnant lakes and pools, which are dispersed by Apollo and his arrowsthat is, the shafts of the sun. The old derivation (Homeric Hymn to Apollo, 371), according to which Delphi was originally called Pytho, because the slain serpent was left there to rot (~O~o~OaL), points to this explanation. See C. Pascal, Studii di antichit e mitologia (1896). PYTHON, a genus of very large snakes of the family Boidae (see SNAKES) inhabiting the tropical parts of Africa, Asia and ~j1 Australia. They differ from the true boas (q.v.), with which they are often confounded by carrying a few teeth in the premaxilla, by the double row of subcaudal - shields and by the posses- , sion of a pair of supraorbital FIG. 1.Head of Boa canina. bones. Most of them have pits in some of the upper and lower labial shields. Python reticulatus is the commonest species in Indo-China and the Malay Islands; four upper labial shields on either side are pitted. It is, next to the Anaconda, one of the largest of all snakes, some specimens being known which measured about 30 ft. in length. P. molurus, scarcely smaller, is the python or rock-snake of India and Ceylon. The African species are much smaller, up to 15 ft. in length, e.g. P. sebae of tropical and southern Africa and the beautiful P. regius of West Africa. P. spilotes is the carpetsnake of Australia and New Guinea. A small, relative of pythons is Loxocemus bicolor of South Mexico, the only New World example.

Python (snake)
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Python (snake) , common name for any member of a family of nonvenomous snakes of the python family. Many species of pythons are large and muscular and kill their prey by squeezing, or constricting, until the animal suffocates. Although most pythons feed on small mammals, some large species can kill and swallow small pigs and goats. They have rarely killed humans. Pythons range from about 1 to 10 m (about 3 to 33 ft) long and weigh up to 140 kg (up to 300 lb). They are primitive snakes that, like boas, still show signs of their lizard ancestry, including two tiny hind limbs, usually better developed in the male. The female lays 15 to 100 eggs, varying with size and species, and broods them until they hatch. Pythons are sometimes found in or near water. About 20 to 25 species of pythons exist, found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific islands. The reticulated python of Southeast Asia is among the largest snakes, reaching a length of 10 m (33 ft). Other well-known pythons are the 7.5-m (25-ft) Indian python, a favorite of snake handlers; the 6.5-m (23-ft) African rock python, and the 1.5-m (5-ft) ball, or royal, python of equatorial Africa, which coils into a ball when molested.

Snakes are a large group of reptiles; there are over 2,000 different species of snakes alive today. Snakes live in a variety of land and water habitats. The most snakes and the largest snakes are found in tropical rainforests . Snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica . There are no snakes native to Hawaii, Iceland, Ireland, or New Zealand. Anatomy : Snakes have a long, narrow body and scaly skin. They have no eyelids, no external ear openings, and no legs (although a few snakes, like boas and pythons, have vestigial hind legs). As they grow, snakes shed their old skin and the film that covers their eyes. Like other reptiles, snakes are cold-blooded. Diet : Snakes are carnivores (meat-eaters). They eat

  • Never handle a large snake (over 8 feet long) alone.
  • Never allow the scent of a prey animal to get on or near you when handling a large snake.
  • Never allow a large snake to roam freely in a room also occupied by people.
  • Always keep your large snake in a securely locked, escape-proof cage.
  • Never handle a large snake after drinking alcoholic beverages. (DUH!) If, after considering all the responsibilities of keeping a large constricting snake, you still want one, I think that a reticulated python would be an impressive addition to any collection.
