The African Rock Python is a large, constricting snake that lives in sub-Saharan Africa. The adult African Rock Python's main predator is man; it is killed for its beautiful skin, meat, and fat (used in tribal medicines). Other predators include crocodiles, badgers, and mongooses. The scientific name of the African Rock Python is Python sebae sebae Genus species , and subspecies Anatomy : Like all snakes, pythons are cold-blooded; they are the same temperature as the environment. They continue to grow all their lives, getting bigger and bigger each year. African Rock Python average 18 to 20 feet long, but can grow up to 28 feet (8.5 m) long. Their scaly skin glistens but is dry is to the touch. African Rock Pythons are tan with brown spots that have black outlines. A tan V-shape marks the face. The python smells using its tongue. This snake has has no fangs. It uses heat sensing organs in its upper and lower jaws to detect warm-blooded prey (like mammals). Hunting and Diet : Pythons are carnivores (meat-eaters). Pythons are not venomous, they kill by constricting (squeezing) the prey it until it can no longer breathe. Like all snakes, they swallow the prey whole, head first. The python's top and bottom jaws are attached to each other with stretchy ligaments, which let the snake swallow animals wider that itself. Snakes don't chew their food, it is digested by very strong acids in the snake's stomach. The African Rock Python eats monkeys, pigs, deer, small apes, birds, and other animals. After eating a large animal, the python needs no food for a long time, and may rest for weeks. In this engorged state, it is most vulnerable to attack by predators.

Ball Pythons (Python regius) are snakes, which are well-tempered and fairly easy to maintain. They may also be referred to as "Royal Pythons," or "Regal Pythons." Domestically captive-bred specimens from reputable breeders are available, and much preferred over wild-caught snakes. Natural Environment Physical Characteristics Both female and male snakes have "anal spurs," which look like small claws on either side of the vent. These are actually vestigial hind legs. Like other snakes, it has a highly sensitive forked tongue which is used as a sensory organ. Subspecies differences: There are no recognized subspecies of the Ball Python, although colors and patterns may differ from region to region. Sexual differences: The female Ball Python is larger than the male, and can reach a length of up to 6 feet, although 4 feet is more common. Ball Pythons have very muscular bodies, which can be 4-6 inches in diameter; the male is generally more slender and has a smaller head. Male snakes have larger anal spurs. A sexing probe can be used to determine the sex of snakes less than 6 months of age, but it should only be done by someone proficient in its use. Young Ball Pythons grow about one foot in length for their first 3 years, and reach sexual maturity at 3-5 years of age. Color: Since it is secretive, the Ball Python has a camouflaged design in browns and tans. The top of the head is characteristically a dark brown, and has yellowish stripes on each side from the nostrils, through the eyes, and to the back of the head. The underside of the snake is ivory white.

The Green Tree Python, ( Morelia viridis ), and the Emerald Tree Boa ( Corallus caninus ) are both commonly kept species of the family Boidae. They are remarkably similar in their management and both are predominantly green. The Green Tree Python ranges from the Cape York Peninsula of Australia north through New Guinea and the surrounding islands. Their length can reach 160-180 cm (63-71 inches) and the pythons may have spots of blue, white, or yellow depending on population, but the spotting is variable. Green Tree Pythons can also be mostly or all yellow and some females will become blue following gravidity (pregnancy). Despite the variances that can be seen in both of these species, no subspecies have yet been described. Emerald Tree Boas from the northern part of their range in Guyana and Suriname may be 160-180 cm (63-71 inches) long and have a broken white line and irregular blotches of white down the back. Emerald Tree Boas from the Amazon Basin are larger at 180-220 cm (71-87 inches), have a solid white line, irregular white blotches, and yellow ventral scales. Emerald Tree Boas from the Amazon Basin tend to have smaller, more minute, and more numerous scales on their heads. Those from the Amazon Basin are also more rare in captive collections.

Burmese PythonBig, Beautiful . . . and Threatened Adopt a Burmese Python! The Burmese python is a one of two subspecies of the Indian python and one of the world's six biggest snakes. Hatchlings weigh only about four ounces and measure 18 to 24 inches; adult females, in contrast, can tip the scales at over 200 pounds and grow to more than 20 feet long. Males tend to be smaller. The Burmese python can be found in Southeast Asia from northeastern India to southern China and on some islands of the East Indies. It lives in a range of habitats from the lush vegetation lining riverbanks in rainforests to grasslands and montane forests. This python is equally at home on the ground and in trees, and is an excellent swimmer. While its life expectancy in the wild is unknown, based on longevity in captivity, the snake is thought to live up to 25 years. Its favorite food includes rabbits, rodents and other mammals, other snakes, and birds. With the conversion of python habitat to agriculture, larger snakes also prey on domestic fowl, pigs, and other farm animals, bringing them into direct conflict with people.

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, Florida (CNN) A dangerous intruder has invaded Everglades National Park, and it's putting the native wildlife at risk. "We are concerned," park biologist Skip Snow said. "They are competing with other animals for food, space, burrows, crevices and rocks." The predator in question is the Burmese python. Native to Burma in Southeast Asia, it is one of the largest snake species in the world. Rangers and other employees have rounded up and removed dozens of pythons from the park since they were first sighted in the late 1990s. Almost 40 have been captured in the last year alone.

- SPECIES SHOWCASE - The Ball Python (Python regius)
The Ball Python is one of the most popular "pet shop" snakes, and frequently can be found even in stores which only sell a handful of herps. In the past, most "Royal" Pythons found in such pet shops were imported adults, and these did not always make the best pets. Imported specimens are frequently infested with parasites (one tell-tale sign of an imported python is small, brown, ticks embedded in the snake's scales), and often do not feed well in captivity. However, over the past few years a number of herpetoculturists have started to seriously work with this species, and captive-born and captive-bred juveniles are easy to find. These acclimate to captivity within a short period of time, and are highly recommended snakes for beginners.
NATIVE RANGE: western Africa, especially in the rain forests from Ghana to Cameroon
HABITAT: savannahs and forests
ADULT LENGTH: four to six feet, this is a stout, full-bodied snake
TEMPERATURE: Ball Pythons need an undertank heater or basking spot near the hide box (but not right over it), and the cage temperature should stay at 77-90F during the day. You can turn off the basking light and drop the temperature to 68-75F at night. These animals are active at night, so no special lighting is required.

February 3, 2005 In their growing battle against giant pythons that have invaded the Florida Everglades, national park officials there have recruited an unlikely ally: a beagle puppy nicknamed "Python Pete." For the past few months Lori Oberhofer, an Everglades wildlife technician, has been training her seven-month-old puppy to pick up the scent of the invasive Burmese pythons. Once he has completed his training, Python Pete will be a "first responder unit," says Oberhofer. His task: to track down snakes and bark after they have been sighted, enabling park officials to capture and remove the huge pythons. Oberhofer got the idea from a similar program in Guam, where she researched brown tree snakes four years ago. U.S. Department of Agriculture officials have been using Jack Russell terriers on that Pacific Ocean island to detect invasive brown tree snakes in airport cargo. The USDA aims to prevent the snakes from slipping out of Guam, where they have wiped out bird populations.

To the Critter Corner Directory Introduction I have acquired my two ball pythons in interesting ways. One of them was found by some Chapel Hill residents on their front porch when they returned home one day. This was a bit unusual since ball pythons are definitely NOT native to North Carolina. They took the snake to the Animal Shelter and I adopted it from the shelter. My other ball python came to me from a counselor at the high school where I teach. Her brother was ready to find a new home for his snake. Both of these snakes are beautiful colors and have proved to be docile and hungry! Ball pythons are a very widely sold snake. About seven or eight years ago, there were huge numbers being imported into the United States from Africa. Fortunately, exporters have now established breeding programs and it is very easy to get a healthy ball python bred in captivity. It is relatively inexpensive and reaches a very nice five feet. However, this snake is probably best acquired by someone who has experience raising snakes. Recently imported snakes can be very reluctant eaters. However, if you can get hold of an adult snake that is a known "good eater" or a captive bred juvenile, you may have better luck. Imported snakes can harbor parasites also, so I heartily recommend for health and ecological reasons, that people only buy captive bred snakes.

To the Critter Corner Directory Introduction It is important to note that Felix was a captive bred snake. I am very opposed to buying reptiles that have been imported from their native lands. Many of these creatures die during transport; many are riddled with parasites; and their behavior is unpredictable. Captive bred reptiles make much better classroom organisms. I must warn teachers (and others) that taking on the care of a large python such as Felix, is not advised. However, sometimes teachers acquire pythons because students go to college and their parents want to find homes for the snakes that have been left behind. Therefore, I will tell what I have learned. The Indian python is one of two subspecies, the other being the Burmese python ( Python molurus bivittatus ). Both subspecies are commonly referred to as the Asian rock python ( Python molurus ). The lighter colored Indian python is native to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The darker colored Burmese python ranges from Myanmar, eastward through southern Asia to southeastern China and Indonesia, excluding the island of Sumatra. Habitat
Indian pythons live in a wide range of habitats including river valleys, woodlands, forests, grasslands, swamps, marshes and rocky foothills. The Indian python is dependent on a continuous water supply. Length and Weight
The record size for an adult Indian python is about 21 feet (6.4 m). Most adult individuals are much smaller, rarely exceeding 12 feet (3.7 m). The Burmese variety tends to be longer and heavier. The record weight for an adult Indian python may be more than 200 pounds (91 kg). A typical adult Indian python weighs between 70-120 pounds (32-55 kg).

Python is the common name for the Boidae Family of nonvenomous constricting snakes—specifically the subfamily Pythonidae . It is also the scientific name for a specific genus of snakes of the family Pythonidae. Pythons live in India , the East Indies Africa , and Australia Generally pythons range in size from less than 5ft to 6m metres (15 to 20 feet ) in length. They are among the longest species of snake in the world; the Reticulated Python can reach lengths of up to 10 metres (35 feet) and is the longest. Pythons are constrictors, and feed on birds and small mammals, killing them by literally squeezing them to death. They coil themselves up around their prey, tighten, but merely squeeze hard enough to stop the prey's breathing and/or blood circulation. Large pythons usually would eat something about the size of a house cat, but 100 pound (45 kg)

Synopsis : Snakes consume whole prey items, which makes providing a balanced diet very simple. Snakes should be taught to eat dead prey items to prevent dangerous bites from ignored rodents. Keywords : nutrition, snake, prey, carnivore, boa, python It is easy to provide a snake with a balanced diet, since snakes, being carnivores, consume whole prey items. Commonly kept boas and pythons usually begin eating baby mice, called pinkies. (Some snakes start off by eating lizards and are switched over to consuming pinkies before being offered for sale in the pet trade). Snakes in the wild may eat mammals, birds, other reptiles, amphibians, fish, worms and insects. When considering purchasing a snake for a pet, make sure it is eating at the pet store prior to bringing it home. Small snakes that are eating pinkies usually graduate to consuming older and larger mice as they grow. You may have seen advertisements for pinkies, fuzzies, hoppers, weanes or weans, smalls and adults. These are just different ages and sizes of mice destined to be used for snake food. Rats also come in different sizes. Since snakes consume their dinner whole, for the most part, they are usually getting a good balance of nutrients. An exception to this occurs when a snake is ill or for some other reason, will only consume pinkies. Pinkies are baby mice, and therefore don't yet have a well-developed skeletal system. The bones of a pinkie contain more cartilage and less calcium than the bones of older mice. If a snake eats pinkies as the sole or major portion of the diet, there is a chance that it might develop calcium deficiency after a period of time. This can be rectified by judiciously dusting a calcium supplement onto a pinkie prior to feeding it to your pet snake. You should always consult with your herp vet prior to doing this, however.
