http://www.smuggled.com/medre167.htm
Two more pet pythons loose takes total to four… Media release dated 7 April 2005 - 9 AM. Snakebusters Melbourne has recently had calls for two escaped pet pythons in Melbourne, one of which is still on the loose. One, a NT Carpet Python was recently recovered by snakebuster Raymond Hoser from the roof of a house in Carnegie. The second snake, a Brisbane Carpet Snake has been living in a roof of a house at Mitcham and has so far eluded capture. However it regularly drops feces and shed skins, the most recent being found on Wednesday afternoon. These snakes are harmless and not native to Melbourne but can survive indefinitely in the roof's of houses. Snakebusters manager, Raymond Hoser says that Melbournian's needn't be too worried about the spate of recent reports of escaped pets. "These happen fairly often. It's just that this week, the cases have been in the news media." "In Melbourne, we had some cases of escaped pets last year as well and in most cases owners and pets are reunited". "Melbourne residents should be more concerned about the local native species, such as Tiger and Brown, both of which tend to bite when approached too close and are deadly." Tiger Snakes are common in the inner suburbs, including Kew and Ivanhoe.

But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure.

Boolean expressions
Search for Boolean expressions like: word1 AND word2 This will search for all objects that contain both "word1" and "word2". Valid Boolean operators include AND, OR, and NOT. A synonym for NOT is a leading hyphen: which would search for occurences of "word1" but would exclude documents which contain "word2". A sequence of words without operators implies AND. A search for "carpet python snakes" translates to "carpet AND python AND snakes".

Basic Facts
Common Name Royal Python (ball python) Scientific Name Python regius Origin Africa Size Lifespan (Captive) 20 - 30 years (record - 47 years) Range West and Central Africa from Senegal to Uganda Habitat Dry brushland, cleared forest, open grassland, even cultivated areas.
General Information
Temperament:
Adult wild caught specimens are a poor choice for a first snake as these animals are extremely difficult to acclimate to captivity. Wild caught individuals have been known to starve themselves to death. Common problems include mites and ticks as well as internal parasites and injuries suffered during capture and shipping. Some of these problems can be solved only with vet care. Captive bred and/or hatched individuals usually feed more readily and are not irritable or shy.
Captive Care
Caging:
Either a 20 gallon long or 29 gallon high aquarium is a good choice for this animal. Substrates commonly include dry cypress mulch, Astroturf, and newspaper (use older newspaper so that the ink is dry). Driftwood and decorative stones should be added to aid the snake during its shed. A hide box is essential (especially with wild caught specimens) since Royal Pythons are extremely private animals. In fact, some individuals will feed more readily from, or only from the hide box.

Big Snakes
The largest-known snake in the world is the Anaconda, or Eunectes murinus , of South America. It holds the world's record for size with one specimen, encountered by petroleum geologist in eastern Columbia in the 1944, measuring 37 1/2 feet in length. Somewhere deep in the southern swamps do they grow bigger? According to Colonel Percy H. Fawcett , a former British Army officer, surveyor and adventurer in the early 1900's, they do: We were drifting easily along on the sluggish current not far below the confluence of tigor and the Rio Negro when almost under the bow there appeared a triangular head and several feet of undulating body. It was a giant anaconda. I sprang for my rifle as the creature began to make its way up the bank, and hardly waiting to aim smashed a .44 soft-nosed bullet into its spine, ten feet below the wicked head. At once there was a flurry of foam, and several heavy thumps against the boat's keel, shaking us as though we had run on a snag... Fawcett describes how they stopped and examined the body. Though he had no ruler, he guessed the length of the creature at sixty-two feet with a twelve-inch diameter. "Such large specimens as this may not be common, but the trails in the swamps reach a width of six feet and support the statements of Indians and rubber pickers that the anaconda sometimes reaches an incredible size dwarfing that shot by me. The Brazilian Boundary Commission told me of one exceeding eighty feet in length!"

Reticulated pythons are usually what their keeper has made them. If properly kept by a knowledgeable owner they behave well and are a spectacular sight as a large tame python. DIET Mice, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits. OTHER MORPHS Normal, Yellow Head, Calico, Albino, Tiger, Super Tiger, Jaguar and island forms. BREEDING Males breed at 7 - 9' and females 11'+. Breeding season in captivity: September - March. Stop all feeding at this time. Animals should have excellent weight and be established before any breeding is attempted. Breeding may be induced by reducing daytime photo periods to 8 - 10 hours and dropping nighttime temperatures into the mid 70's. Introduce the female into the males cage, never house two adult males together the injuries can be horrific.Careful when handling males in breeding season. Misting the animals with water may be beneficial. Lays 25 - 80+ eggs, maternally incubates. Incubation temperature 88 - 90F(optimal), 80-90 days to hatch. Carpet Python - Morelia spilota sp.
[Back to Snake Care Sheets]
General Information D istribution
Various subspecies of this snake are found throughout most of Australia and New Guinea. The more brightly coloured specimens (referred to as 'Jungle Carpets') are found in northern Australia. While darker, but still attractive specimens are found in mostly in the central and southern parts of its habitat. Habitat Carpet pythons are found in a variety of different habitats ranging from grasslands and wooded savannahs as with the Southern Carpet Python (Morelia spilota imbricata) to the tree perches of the Jungle and Coastal Carpet pythons (Morelia spilota cheynei and mcdowelli) in heavily forested Australian subtropical rainforests. Adult Size The smallest carpet python is the Jungle Carpet, which is typically between 140 cm and 200 cm (4' 6" to 6' 6"). Southwestern Carpets generally reach lengths of 170 cm to 190 cm (5' 6" to 6' 3"), and Coastal carpets between 180 and 250cm (6' to 8') . However, Coastal carpets have been known to reach lengths of 14 feet. Hatchling carpets of the three species listed above have a total length of approximately 42 cm. Temperament As with most partially arboreal snakes, carpets can be a little high strung. When young, carpet pythons are highly sensitive to potential threats. Translation, you may get bitten a few times when the animal is young. As time passes, you will learn to 'read' the snake's reaction to you and it will learn that you are not a threat. Translation, you won't get bitten as often!!!!

GREEN TREE PYTHON
Name: Green Tree Python Scientific name: Morelia viridis Range: Papua and Iran Jaya, New Guinea and on the Cape York Peninsula of Australia Habitat: humid, warm tropical regions Status: endangered in native countries  due to habitat destruction, skin trade, and hunting for food Diet in the wild: small rodents (mice, rabbits) and birds Diet in the zoo: small rats and baby chicks Location in the zoo: Herpetarium
Physical description: Adult length 2.1 m  for large specimen, an average specimen is 1.8 m, fairly slender snake that coils around branches (looks like a cinnamon bun).  They have thermosensory pits along the upper and lower labials.  Generally, they are a vibrant green in color but some adults are blue or yellow.  They have a series of white or blue dorsal and/or lateral spots evident in most.  The hatchlings are extremely variable in color from brick red to lemon yellow to brown.   Strangely enough, all of these colors can be found in the same clutch.

35. Diamond Python: WhoZoo
The Diamond python is isolated but surrounded by other snakes. Occasionally, the zoo keeper adds mist to the python s cage to simulate rain.

The Diamond Python Name: Diamond Python Scientific name: Morelia spilota spilota Range: Australia (New South Wales) Habitat: Rain Forest, Temperate Forest, Grassland, caves, and hollow trees. Status: Not threatened  Diet in the wild: Small mammals, bats, birds, and lizards. Diet in the zoo: small rodents. Location in the zoo: The Diamond Python is located in the zoo's Herpetarium P h y s i c a l d e s c r i p t i o n A h a n d s o m e s n a k e w i t h w h i t e s p o t s T h e r e i s a l s o a d e f i n i t e d i a m o n d p a t t e r n o n t h e s n a k e s s c a l e s
  • Body Length 7-9 feet in captivity 10 to 12 feet in the wild. Weight 4 - 10 kg The Diamond Python is covered in an intricately designed diamond pattern.  It is covered with white spots, and normally, there's a spot on each scale.

G e n e r a l i n f o r m a t i o n Special ada pta t i o ns Pythons have a row of heat-sensing pits on the upper lip, and teeth in the upper jaw.  Although their eyesight is poor, they have a good sense of smell and rely on that plus their ability to sense the approach of warm-blooded prey.  Diamond pythons can tolerate lower temperatures than other python species.  Their dark color may increase their ability to absorb heat.   DPS The Diamond Python was briefly threatened by the outbreak of a disease called DPS (Diamond Python Syndrome).  During this outbreak, the body structure of the pythons were weakened, and when held they felt jelly like and some snakes experienced tremors.

About this snake:
The Ball Python gets its name from its primary method of defense. When disturbed, the ball python will wrap itself up into a ball, protecting its head by hiding it in the middle of its coils. Some predators, like cats, are discouraged by the snake's lack of movement and lose interest. Reptile predators are discouraged because the large, round "ball" shape makes the python harder to swallow. The Ball Python is one of Africa's smallest pythons, reaching "only" two meters (six and a half feet) in length.

About this snake: Burmese Python
Among the largest pythons, Burmese Pythons can grow to a length of six meters (20 feet), with almost 400 sets of ribs. The largest ones are always female. Burmese Pythons are typically 18" to 24" long at birth. The female is capable of depositing and incubating up to 100 eggs. The female will gather the eggs together and coil herself around them to keep them warm. She has the ability to raise her own body temperature and does so by making her muscles tremble. The Burmese Python is the only snake who is capable of doing this and the increased body heat helps to keep the eggs warm enough to develop properly. The eggs hatch in 55-60 days. Although the female will never leave the eggs to eat, once they are hatched the baby pythons are on their own.
Pythons kill by constriction, crushing their prey. In the wild, their diet is extremely diverse. They've been reported to eat such things as birds, rats, monkeys, deer and even porcupines! The prey is swallowed whole and digested while the python basks in the sun, which keeps its body temperature high enough to be able to digest properly. Burmese Pythons are able to swallow their prey whole because of their hinged jaw which actually separates and allows them to intake something that is five times as wide as its head. Even though they are often docile in captivity, they make poor pets because of their huge size and unpredictable behavior.

Python Snake Family Boidae Python is a common name for Nonpoisonous snakes of boa and python family. Pythons are large and muscular, and kill their prey by squeezing, or constricting, until it suffocates. Although most feed on small mammals, some large species can kill and swallow small pigs and goats. Rarely have they killed humans. Pythons range from 1 to 10 m (3 to 33 ft) long and weigh up to 140 kg (300 lb). The female lays 15 to 100 eggs, and broods them until they hatch. They are found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific islands. The reticulated python of Southeast Asia is among the largest snakes, reaching a length of 10 m (33 ft). Other well-known pythons are the Indian python , a favorite of snake handlers; African rock python ball or royal python of equatorial Africa, which curls into a ball and can be rolled on the ground. Diamond snake or Carpet snake, also diamond python, common name for a large constricting snake found in Australia and New Guinea. It is named for diamond-shaped markings of yellow and black on the back and abdomen.
