Python Publications
The following lists known Python books and other major publications, as of the latest update to this page (at various points in 2002). I've tried to group these into some sort of logical fashion (e.g., topic, author), but please don't read anything into the list order here. Given the rapid growth this domain is currenty experiencing, I tend to not keep this list very up to date, and I am probably missing a few entries. Check the python.org book list or commercial sites such as amazon.com for more information, as well as cover photos and links. New : another independent Python books list lives at this site

  • Python is growing in popularity; based on download statistics, there are now over 450,000 people using Python, and more than 150,000 people using Python on Windows. Use of the language has been growing at about 40% per year since 1995, and there is every reason to believe that growth will continue. Despite Python's increasing popularity on Windows, Python Programming on Win32 is the first book to demonstrate how to use it as a serious Windows development and administration tool. Unlike scripting on Unix, Windows scripting involves integrating a number of components, such as COM or the various mail and database APIs, with the Win32 programming interface. While experienced Windows C++ programmers can find their way through the various objects, most people need some guidance, and this book is it. It addresses all the basic technologies for common integration tasks on Windows, explaining both the Windows issues and the Python code you need to glue things together.

Python language, a simple yet powerful scripting language with excellent functionality for processing linguistic data. Python can be downloaded for free from www.python.org . Here is a five-line Python program which takes text input and prints all the words ending in ing nest lines of code, thus the line starting with if falls inside the scope of the previous line starting with for , so the ing test is performed for each word. Second, Python is object-oriented ; each variable is an entity which has certain defined attributes and methods. For example, line is more than a sequence of characters. It is a string object that has a method (or operation) called split that we can use to break a line into its words. To apply a method to an object, we give the object name, followed by a period, followed by the method name. Third, methods have arguments expressed inside parentheses. For instance

eLearning for Python Programming For the past two years a project using blended learning with reusable learning objects has been running in the department of Computing, Communications Technology and Mathematics (CCTM). This has led to substantial improvements in retention and pass rates in students studying introductory Java programming. This successful approach is being extended and applied to the extended degree (HITECC) module. These students study a simpler but still demanding computer language called Python, as a transition to entering year 1 on a degree. A significant strand of the work is the development of quality (reusable) multimedia eLearning resources. The module booklet has been adapted for online delivery through WebCT, and has links to the learning objects and additional resource materials.
A page from the online module booklet - links to the
learning objects and additional materials can be
seen on the right-hand side The template for learning objects developed for Java is being reused, and any applicable objects are being customised for the Python language. The learning objects and resources are being developed so that subject staff can easily adapt the content with specific examples drawn from their areas of expertise. Incorporating this feature will also facilitate the generic reuse of learning object templates in other subject areas.

This page is meant to help new users of Python who might feel a little disoriented. One question that might come to mind is: ok, we've installed Python... ummm... now what? It might be nice to have a "visual" guide to reduce any initial anxieties. That's what this page is for. The plan is to go through a small session with IDLE: the Integrated Development Environment. IDLE is designed to provide a simple way of exploring the language. During this session, I'll make a few fumbling mistakes, just to show what to expect when things don't go exactly hunky-dory. By the way, this is an online document If you have any suggestions, or if you want to make corrections or improvements, please feel free to email at
