I'm sick of reading about the precedence of operators; I want to know how to do the fun stuff. I want a book that emphasizes good programming style in Perl. Many of the Perl programs I have seen are written in a quick-and-dirty style; I wanted to see if the style I have developed in other languages can translate. In many Perl books, object-oriented programming is treated as an optional feature for advanced programming. I wanted to bring it closer to the center of focus (although I am anything but an object-oriented bigot). Extreme Perl Web Client Programming with Perl - Automating Tasks on the Web

Travis Whitton wrote a nice Python/Gnumeric guide for the old API in Gnumeric 1.0. Here's the new one written when 1.1.20 was being released. There are new features since 1.1.18! And note, the API is still experimental and may change. With luck I'll update this HOWTO. New: JK fixed some bugs and extended the Python interface to allow GUI calls! Hoody-hoo! Python Programming
X442.3 (1 semester unit in EECS)
Python is a modern scripting language that allows rapid application development of both large and small software systems. The language is open source and runs on a wide variety of computing platforms. Python is object-oriented by design and provides an excellent platform for learning the basics of programming and programming languages. Python code tends to be very readable and easily maintainable, making it an ideal language for team projects. Through its extensive library of modules, Python provides access to databases, CGI programming, system administration, and other useful services. Furthermore, it's easy to extend the language through new modules (written in Python) or extensions (written in lower-level languages, such as C). Many companies have adopted Python for large-scale projects.
Practical applications of Python, including CGI programming, general programming for the Web, system administration, text handling, and other topics are presented with examples of useful, working programs.
Prerequisites: While no previous programming experience is required, you should have access to a computer running Python or access to the Internet to allow you to download Python.

August 31, 2004: Byline Renaming
As of some random number of days ago, my blog client (such as it is) is no longer called Byline instead, I have agreed to turn the name over to another project, an industrial-strength CMS framework contributed to the Open Source world by Red Hat. I'm not going to be in a hurry to re-brand the code that is already here but as soon as I come up with a better name, I will switch over to it at that time. Suggestions are welcome. If you're packaging Byline for a Linux distro or something like that, please try to rename your package to "byline-blogclient" or something along those lines, since sooner or later someone is probably going to come along and try to package the CMS under the same name. (In the long term, though, I think my current blog client code is going to be refactored rather heavily anyway, if I do anything with it at all.)

History
Python is a very new language; in fact it was released by its designer, Guido Van Rossum, in February 1991 while working for CWI also known as Stichting Mathematisch Centrum. Many of Python's features originated from an interpreted language called ABC. Rossum wanted to correct some of ABC's problems and keep some of its features. At the time he was working on the Amoeba distributed operating system group and was looking for a scripting language with a syntax like ABC but with the access to the Amoeba system calls, so he decided to create a language that was generally extensible. Since he had some experience with using Modula-2+, he decided to talk with the designers of Modula-3. Modula-3 is the origin of the syntax and semantics used for exceptions, and some other Python features. In 1989, during the Christmas holidays, he decided to give it a try and design a language which he later called Python. Just in case you're wondering how the language got its name, well it's not from those dangerous reptiles. Python actually got is name from a BBC comedy series from the seventies "Monty Python's Flying Circus". The designer needed a name that was short, unique, and slightly mysterious. Since he was a fan of the show he thought this name was great.

Python was created in the early by Guido van Rossum at Stichting Mathematisch Centrum (CWI) in the Netherlands as a successor of the ABC programming language . Guido is Python's principal author, although it includes many contributions from others. Guido's continuing central role in deciding the direction of Python is jokingly acknowledged by referring to him as its Benevolent Dictator for Life (BDFL). The last version released from CWI was Python 1.2. In 1995, Guido continued his work on Python at the Corporation for National Research initiatives (CNRI) in Reston, Virginia

Programming Python

Early in the 1990s the Python programming language inspired much enthusiasm. Here was a language that was easily ported across platforms. Even better, it allowed procedural, functional (as in Lisp), or object-oriented styles. It directly incorporated network programming features. Thus, much of the enthusiasm for Python was based on the ease with which GUI-based networked applications could be written for numerous platforms. All that was needed was a decent reference manual and training guide. Programming Python is that long anticipated reference and guide, all rolled into a single package. The first part of the book covers a description of the general features of the language. Most importantly, it describes some of the unusual characteristics of Python. Although this section is not a comprehensive tutorial, it does provide enough information to help prospective Python programmers orient themselves. For example, Python can be used as a scripting language, it can be compiled into standalone applications, it can be embedded into programs written in other programming languages (or other Python programs), or it can be interpreted. The second section covers fundamental parts of the language. It slowly develops a sample application. With each iteration the author adds some variation that describes an additional feature of the language. By working through these examples the reader learns how these features add power to the program.

History
The following is from an anonymous donor
  • Python was invented by Guido Van Rossum in 1990.
  • At the time, Guido was working on the Amoeba distributed operating system. Python was to be the scripting language for this OS.
  • Python was influenced by the teaching language ABC (on which Guido had worked) as well as many other programming languages.
  • The first public release was in 1991.
  • The comp.lang.python usenet group founded in 1994.
  • Python was free as in speech from the beginning. (EMail Date: Sun, 08 May 2005 04:38:41 -0700 (PDT))
