I use a hot wire machine but still found the book to be quite helpful and very interesting reading. After all, pyrography is the art of "drawing with fire" and whatever tool is used, the function is the same. Pyrography can be traced back into ancient times. It became quite popular during the Victorian era when artists used a hot poker from the fireplace to draw designs on furniture. The art was sneeringly referred to as "poker work" but still became quite popular as tools were refined and engineered for a much finer work. Today's tools primarily fall into the two classes, solid point and hot wire. The author prefers the solid point and stresses the subtle differences in technique with an emphasis on her preference. The author begins with a brief background and introduction to Pyrography and quickly moves into an explanation of basic skills and exercises necessary to becoming accomplished in the art. These are followed with ten progressively difficult projects in which the author coaches the reader through. Each project is designed to build on the skills learned with the previous project without seeming to be repetitious. Ms Gregory is a skillful teacher and artist who knows her medium well and has accomplished her intent of providing a step-by-step book of instruction for learning the art of Pyrography.

    The Republic of Mali
is a West African country, located on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. Timbuktu is one of Mali's northernmost citiesvery remote even from the capital city of Bamako, where our anthropologists who got us these photos live and work. Their travels throughout Mali, mostly up the Niger River, were where they discovered the pyrography they are sharing with us here. Because here we are looking at a traditional form of pyrography, it seems important to make some distinctions in the terminology used here and elsewhere in this series of articles. In this fifth article, you will see reference to traditional art without use of the term folk art , even though that term would not be inappropriate. All who have been following this series have observed the term "folk art" in the third article where the work of the Rev. Howard Finster was highlighted. This writer decided at that time to make a distinction in the two terms, which admittedly is an arbitrary one, since, in many art circles, these terms are used interchangeably. Although they do overlap in meaning, for the purposes of these articles, the term

    PYROGRAPHY (Woodburning):
    A Rennaisance Art
    by Martha Schreffler
    Introduction
Pyrography comes from the Greek "pyr+graphos" meaning "fire-drawing". Webster's Dictionary describes it as the "process or art of producing designs on wood, leather, or other materials by using heated tools or a fine flame."
My projects have steadily progressed from early works where I was familiarizing myself with burning techniques to the re-creation of a sample of period pyrography (at left) using flame-heated tools.
    Examples of Period Pyrography
First-century "fire-etched" Peruvian artifacts exist which show that the tools and technology to burn designs was available pre-1600. The earliest example of pyrography I've located dates from 0-700 A.D. It is pictured in the article Antique Pyrography by Kathleen Menendez. Surviving examples of Western European pyrography from the 15th and 16th centuries include decorative designs on musical instruments such as the Trinity and Queen Mary harps and richly ornamented chests, coffers and panels from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Queen Mary harp currently resides in Scotland and the Trinity harp in Ireland. The pyrographic designs are faint and the pigments faded. To get an idea how they might have looked in their "former glory", I recommend taking a look at the beautiful recreation of the Trinity created by harpmaker, Jay Witcher.

American decorative artist Mark Hale from Indiana added pyrography to his fine woodworking only about a year ago. Mark makes finished and unfinished boxes all summer, then woodburns and stains or paints some of the unfinished ones in his kitchen in the winter when his workshop is too cold. His workshop has a virtual counterpart now at his Mark's Workshop website, well worth a visit. Mark Hale's remarkable story and art work were featured in Pyrograffiti No. 18
