The Pyramids of Egypt, built at Giza during the 4th Dynasty (circa 2680-c.2544 BC) are the oldest of the seven wonders and the only ones remaining intact today.
Thegreat pyramids of Egypt still stand. They were built between 2650 and 2500 BC. Exceptfor parts of the Mausoleum and of the temple of Artemis, they are the only one ofthe seven ancient wonders still standing.
Of the seven wonders of the ancientworld, only the pyramids of Egypt have survived in a form that resembles their originalcondition. The largest of the three, known as the Great Pyramid of Khufu, was madeof approximately 2.3 million blocks of stone each weighing an average of 2.5 tons.Located in Giza on the west bank of the Nile River, near Cairo, the pyramids remainone of the engineering marvels of all time.

Exploring the Ancient Pyramids
Adapted From: Architecture For Dummies From the ancient civilizations of the Near East to the native peoples of Central America, pyramid building has been a common architectural design for thousands of years. What is so appealing about this tapering shape? Ancient rulers liked these artificial mountains for their great height (allowing them to commune with the gods) and commanding visual presence over flat river valleys. On a practical level, a pyramid concentrates most of its building on the lower half, so fewer stones have to be hauled to the top. The lower stories act as scaffolding for constructing the upper ones. Tomb and temple, straight-sided and stepped, pyramids assume a variety of functions and forms.
Building an afterlife: Egyptian pyramids
The ancient Egyptians built, for their rulers, more than 80 pyramids along the banks of the Nile near modern-day Cairo from 2700 to 1640 B.C. The pyramids were designed according to three forms:
  • Step pyramid Bent pyramid Straight-sided pyramid (the most common type)

Maya Architecture The Mayan civilization had elaborate buildings. These buildings were not made of stone or wood. They were built with concrete! Concrete is an important building material still used today. The Mayans built pyramids as monuments to their gods and leaders. Some of the pyramids were 200 feet high. The tops of the Mayan pyramids are not pointed like the Egyptian pyramids. Instead they are flat. The rulers and leaders would climb the pyramids and sit upon the flat tops. Mayans also built palaces for the rulers. The pyramids and palaces were often arranged around a central court or garden.

Egyptian art and architecture are a very firm reflection of the culture from which they were produced. The power of the pharaoh and his position in society is clearly reflected in the large project which they were able to complete. The pharaoh was the center of the Egyptian society. Pyramids
Tombs Temples Statues and Monuments PYRAMIDS Probably the most famous structure in all of Egypt, are the Pyramids. They are still one of the worlds best architectural achievement, even though they were built many centuries ago. These structures can be as tall as 482 feet (147 m) high. The Pyramid towers over many other famous landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty. The first true pyramid was build at saqqara for the king Zoser. It was called a step pyramid because of its step shape. The later pyramids were smooth sided, like the Great Pyramid at Giza, built for King Khufu about 4,500 years ago. The smooth sided pyramid was built from Dynasty IV onwards. They were built by first having men to chisel the block of granite the way that they wanted it. The stonemasons used special rods to check that a stone block was cut accurately. Next, the blocks stayed in the quarry until the flood season so they could use barges to haul over the heavy granite blocks. Once the boast had arrived near the pyramid, they unloaded the blocks, and were hauled up a ramp. Then, ropes and levers were used to maneuver the huge blocks into position. The overseer would check that every block was laid correctly. Once all of the granite blocks were placed in position, laborers rubbed the casing blocks with polishing stones until they would shine in the sun. The overseers used plump lines to check that the angle of the slope was correct.

http://www.geocities.com/jyce3/earch.htm
Egyptian Architecture The ancient Egyptians used the golden ratio in much of their artwork, including in heiroglyphs, the pyramids, and many statues. The Ahmes papyrus of Egypt gives an account of the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza in 4700 B.C. with proportions according to a "sacred ratio." Modern measurements show that the ratio of the distance from groud center to base edge, to slant edge of the pyramid is amost exactly 0.618. The sides of the pyramid appear to be golden triangles. A golden triangle is an isosceles triangle with base angles of 72º and a vertex angle of 36º. The picture above shows that the apothem (central height) of any of the side triangles of the pyramid relate to half the base in the proportional ratio of the golden section. In cubits (the measurement used by ancient Egyptians): 1/2 base = 220; apothem = 356; 356:220 = 1.618 Also, the 3-4-5 triangle is the golden ratio between its 5 unit side and 3 unit base. The Egyptians thought this was of vital importance. They used this triangle in many ways, such as a surveying tool and in the pyramids. The three oldest Giza pyramids lay on a Fibonacci spiral and the opening to the Hall of Records is geometrically marked by the lines which bisect the golden rectangle.

Photographs of Maya ruins of Tikal showing how Hasselblad cameras and Zeiss lenses result in better pictures of the pyramids and temples of Tikal. Tikal Temple I and the Great Plaza. Temple I is the mortuary monument erected to commemorate Ruler A, who is interred in Burial 116 beneath this pyramid. One of his sons was buried about 100 yards diagonally across this plaza, under Structure 5D-73, in the Tomb of the Jade Jaguar. The photographs on this page were taken with a Hasselblad ELX camera and Zeiss 50mm wide angle lens, using a polarizing filter. Photography was programmed for December, the height of the rainy season, in order to get the full green of the surrounding jungle. Too many photos of Maya ruins are taken in the dry season, when the grass is wilted and the trees have lost their leaves. Want to see a colorful pre-Columbian image like this on paper? Scan the transparency and then use a Hewlett-Packard DesignJet wide format color inkjet printer. The quality approaches that of an enlargement produced on photo paper by professional lab. Scanned on a Scitex EverSmart Pro flatbed scanner (www.flatbed-scanner-review.org). Telephoto view of Temple I taken from the Central Acropolis across the Great Plaza. The entire structure was originally plastered white. Then the roof comb was painted with reds, blues, and other colors to accent the different areas of sculptural decoration. These roof combs were like giant billboards, with immense portrayals of the enthroned king, larger than life size. The stone used to construct these pyramids is local limestone, obtained from nearby quarries. The ancient Maya had no stone tools but limestone is soft enough that the Maya could utilize chert tools to work the stone into neat rectangular building blocks.

Most people come to egypt to see the Pyramids and ancient monuments, so it's worthwhile knowing at least a bit about the styles of architecture and teh different buildings. Mastabas
Early kings and nobles were buried in these block-like, above-ground tombs, intially of mudbrick and then of stone. They contain many storerooms and were usually built over a deep burial shaft to protect the dead person. Pyramids There are still many theories about the building of the pyramids and their function were they temples? Tombs? solar observatories? The consensus is that they were tombs, burial chambers for the pharaoh on a scale we have never seen since. The gradual development of the 'true pyramid' can be easily seen from the earliest mastabas to the step pyramid, then the pyramid at Maidum, the bent pyramid, red pyramid, and finally the great pyramids at giza. Built of stone and rubble cores, most pyramids were sheathed in smooth limestone and according to some, at least were painted brilliant white and decorated with painted hieroglyphs. And, even though we see the pyramids as standing alone, they were always built as part of a larger pyramid complex which included a valley temple and a mortuary temple and causeway. See Pyramids.

architecture can start from a simple enclosure of a space. pyramids werebuilt as burial chambers for the Egyptian kings (Pharaohs).
    http://www.mste.uiuc.edu/courses/ci300fa00/students/sestito/
Space and Architecture The idea of space and space requirements starts with few simple actions that we and other living creatures perform. How much space do I need? How much is the ideal space necessary to perform certain daily functions: sleeping, working in an office, cooking in a kitchen? Lifestyle, economic reasons, trends, are also related to quantity of space that is the ideal and acceptable to all of us. Space also has been constructed as proportional module. A proportional system, which was used again and again in different style during the centuries, is referred as the Golden Mean or Section Students' Activities:
  • Research how other buildings were built according to the Golden mean rule, especially during the antique time Greece and the Renaissance time.
  • The "scale" is a mathematical relation of parts or totality of a building or any object. Architecture can start from a simple enclosure of a space. Organizing the space is what constitutes the functionality of the space itself. History also can be a good solid model how space was used in the past by generations. Religious Spaces Egypt Pyramids were built as burial chambers for the Egyptian kings (Pharaohs). The Pyramid consisted of the building itself which was the burial chamber.
