Egyptian Architecture The pyramids of Egypt are the most famous works of Egyptian architecture. They were build between 2700 BC and 1600 BC. Most were built along the western banks of the Nile River, Egypt; in the fifty-five mile stretch between Abu Rosha and Memphis. The pyramids were really tombs for the pharaohs of Egypt. There were three types of pyramids: Step Pyramid, the oldest and most simple. It had five huge steps instead of smooth sides; The Straight Pyramid, pretty self explanatory, the sides were smooth and straight. The Great Pyramid at Giza is a Straight Pyramid; and lastly, the bent Pyramid. This curious looking construction was a way for the pyramid builders to use less stone, but still make it look nice. About three-quarters of the way up, the angle changed slightly, so from far away, the pyramid looks bent. The pyramids were very well planned out. The architects of the pyramid had control of a huge number of workers for the project that usually lasted about 50 years. Before construction began, the site of the pyramid had to be found and leveled. The underground chambers where the mummy was to be stored were dug first, then the base stones of the pyramid were laid in. The architect and scribes were meticulous and knew where every stone would go, how big they were, and where they came from. Workers, mostly slaves, cut huge blocks of limestone, some weighing as much as 2.5 tons, out of nearby quarries. Then, another group would move the stones to the pyramid construction site rolled on logs. After arriving, the stones were positioned carefully, and cut to fit. The outer stones were cut the most precisely. As the pyramid grew taller, the inner passageways were cut, and ramps were built in order to facilitate the placing of the stones. The last stone to be placed on a pyramid was called the cap stone. It was usually made of granite, highly polished, and about ten feet by ten feet at the base. After the cap stone was placed, the workers gradually took away the ramps, smoothing the walls with chisels and dolerite balls on their way down.

The outstanding group of pyramids in Egypt is at Giza, near Cairo. The largest, the Great Pyramid, was built as the tomb of the Pharaoh Khufu and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. When built, the Great Pyramid measured 147 m (481 ft) high with a square base measuring 230 m (756 ft) on each side. The remains of about 70 pyramids may still be seen in Egypt and the Sudan. The prototype of the true pyramid in Egypt was the step pyramid, so called because its successive layers of stone suggest a series of enormous steps. The most famous and best preserved of the step pyramids is that at Saqqara, near Cairo, built about 2700 BC.
In ancient Egypt, sphinxes were statues representing deities, with the body of a lion and the head of some other animal or of man, frequently a likeness of the king. The most famous of all Egyptian sphinxes is the Great Sphinx of Giza, near the pyramids. Dating from before 2500 BC, the Great Sphinx is about 20 m (66 ft) high and about 73 m (240 ft) long. The Pyramids of Giza The pyramids of Giza, are perhaps the only true rival to the Great Sphinx , when one thinks about Ancient Egypt and it's architecture. The valley of Giza with it's wonderful monuments, is truly a marvel of architectural prowess. The three Pyramids, consist of The Great Pyramid of Khufu , The Pyramid of Kafhre and The Pyramid of Menkaura. Each Pyramid is a tomb to a different King of Egypt. All three pyramids were built during the Third and Fourth Dynasty, and were monumental undertakings of the king and the kings sons. The Pyramid of Khufu has a base which covers roughly a nine acre area (roughly 392,040 square feet). The pyramid of Menkaura, unlike the other pyramids, had one tier of it's base covered in granite. The pyramid of Khafre, had a two tier base encased in granite. Unfortunately like many of the great Kings of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, the Pyramid of Menkaura, Khufu, and Kafhre were not finished in the time of the end of the Kings reign. In the case of Menkaura, the king died before it's construction was completed. The monuments of Giza and the entire Giza valley stand as a marvelous reminder of the skill executed in the creation of the pyramids, and are truly fabulous to see.

Mayan Art and Architecture
With the decipherment of the Maya script it was discovered that the Maya were one of the few civilizations where artists attached their name to their work. The art of the Maya has been called the richest of the New World because of the great complexity of patterns and variety of media expressions. Limestone structures, faced with lime stucco, were the hallmark of ancient Maya architecture. Maya buildings were adorned with carved friezes and roof combs in stone and stucco. With large quantities of limestone and flint available, plaster and cement were easily produced. This allowed the Mayans to build impressive temples, with stepped pyramids. On the summits were thatched- roof temples. Evidence show that the early Maya architects were using the corbel vault principle, which is arch like structures with sides that extend inward until they meet at the top. Another matchless feature of the Mayans was the use of colorful murals. It is also noted that most of the Maya cities were built by being divided into quaters by two avenues which cross-cut each other at right angles. Roofs were flat and made with cedar beams overlaid with mortar. The walls were plastered and painted with great gods and other mythological features. Tombs were often encased within or beneath Mayan structures. Frequently new temples were built over existing structures.

PYRAMIDS OF MEXICO
Deep within the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala and extending into the limestone shelf of the Yucatan peninsula lie the mysterious temples and pyramids of the Maya. While Europe was still in the midst of the Dark Ages, these amazing people had mapped the heavens, evolved the only true writing system native to the Americas and were masters of mathematics. They invented the calendars we use today. Without metal tools, beasts of burden or even the wheel they were able to construct vast cities across a huge jungle landscape with an amazing degree of architectural perfection and variety. Their legacy in stone, which has survived in a spectacular fashion at places such as Palenque, Tikal, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Copan and Uxmal, lives on as do the seven million descendants of the classic Maya civilization. The Maya are probably the best-known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica. Originating in the Yucatan around 2600 B.C., they rose to prominence around A.D. 250 in present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, northern Belize and western Honduras. Building on the inherited inventions and ideas of earlier civilizations such as the Olmec, the Maya developed astronomy, calendrical systems and hieroglyphic writing. The Maya were noted as well for elaborate and highly decorated ceremonial architecture, including temple-pyramids, palaces and observatories, all built without metal tools. They were also skilled farmers, clearing large sections of tropical rain forest and, where groundwater was scarce, building sizable underground reservoirs for the storage of rainwater. The Maya were equally skilled as weavers and potters, and cleared routes through jungles and swamps to foster extensive trade networks with distant peoples.

    Egypt: Art and Architecture
    Architecture
The great architectural achievements of the past are built of stone. Stone quarries supplied the large blocks of granite, limestone, and sandstone that were used for building temples and tombs. Architects planned carefully as building was done without mortar, so the stones had to fit precisely together. Only pillars were used to sustain short stone supports. At the temple of Karnak, a ramp of adobe brick can be seen leading to the top of the temple wall. Such ramps were used to allow workmen to carry stones to the top of structure and allow artists to decorate the tops of walls and pillars. Pillars were built in the same way. As height was added, the ground was raised. When the top of the pillar was completed, the artists would decorate from the top down, removing ramp sand as they went along. As soon as a pharaoh was named, construction on his tomb was begun. Tomb building continued throughout his life and stopped only on the day on which he died. As a result, some tombs are very large and finely decorated, while other tombs, like that of King Tutankhamun, are small because he ruled as a pharaoh for such a short time. The architecture was based upon perpendicular structures and inclined planes since there was no structural assistance except the strength and balance of the structure itself. For this reason, the square and the plumb-line were very important tools.

The country man is wise Town men might laugh at the bee-keeper talking to his bees or the seedsman talking to his plants and tell them that they are mad. When a swarm of wild bees in the walls of Hammerwood heard a bee-keeper proposing to kill them for fear of the spread of disease, the bees heard him and felt my fear for them! Within two hours they had fled elsewhere. Increasingly that which was unimaginable is now understandable. What would the medieval peasant have thought about that biblical story of Adam being put to sleep, cut open, the extraction of a rib and his being sewn back together, alive? In the past, life was simple - it was all a matter of belief. As we ate of the tree of knowledge, life became less clear. With imperfect knowledge Darwinists told us that we evolved from a primeval sea of life and they disrupted the faith of many. Yet scientific understanding of the DNA mechanism may yet confirm conclusively our old beliefs. If life ever evolved from chaos, the ancient myths suggest that it did so in another creation. What was light long ago has faded into darkness. Imperfect knowledge plunges us into a sea of uncertainty but in the deeper knowledge of science we rediscover the beauty of creation. The job common to artists, priests and scientists is to make that which was invisible visible. The task of the museum curator is to preserve the source materials.

a rchitecture - The art of designing and constructing buildings ( structures ), and other environmental features. A person who practises architecture is called an architect The jargon of architecture is what architects and designers archly call "talkitecture" or "archispeak." They refer to windows as " glazing " or " fenestration ," and a beam or lintel as " trabeation ." A covered driveway is a "porte-cochere." Nothing is simply flat , it's " planar " instead. Construction people are content with solid Anglo-Saxon words: wall, window, and door. Architects add a savory salad of Latin- and French-based words. Architects eschew gustatory metaphors like my salad, but they can't hold back from using the human body as metaphor: a building can have arms, head, spine, skeleton, skin, etc. Western periods of architectural history generally parallel those of the other arts: classical Gothic Renaissance Mannerism ... Modernism , and Postmodernism among them.

The ancient Egyptians were the first to use mathematics in art. It seems almost certain that they ascribed magical properties to the golden section (golden ratio, divine proportion, phi) and used in the design of their great pyramids.
pyramids, Giza If we take a cross section of the Great Pyramid , we get a right triangle, the so-called Egyptian Triangle. The ratio of the slant height of the pyramid (hypotenuse of the triangle) to the distance from ground center (half the base dimension) is 1.61804 ... which differs from phi by only one unit in the fifth decimal place. If we let the base dimension be 2 units, then the sides of the right triangle are in the proportion 1:sqrt(phi):phi and the pyramid has a height of sqrt(phi). Visit the web page Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza for more details.
