Pyramid In architecture the term "pyramid" denotes a monument that resembles the geometrical figure of the same name. It is almost exclusively applied to the stone structures of ancient Egypt and of the pre-Columbian cultures of Central America and Mexico.

    EGYPT
The Egyptian pyramids were funerary monuments built for the pharaohs and their closest relatives. Most date from the Old Kingdom (c.2686-2181 BC) and are found on the west bank of the Nile, in a region approximately 100 km long and situated south of the delta, between Hawara and Abu Ruwaysh. Pyramids developed from the "mastaba", a low, rectangular stone structure erected over a tomb. HOW TO NAVIGATE:

The oldest pyramid known, the Step Pyramid of King Zoser at Saqqara (c.2650 BC), has a large mastaba (tomb) as its nucleus and consists of six terraces of diminishing sizes, one built upon the other. It was surrounded by an elaborate complex of buildings, now partially restored, whose function related to the cult of the dead.

Thanks Michael Rutherford 04-30-2004, 03:36 PM I've checked your article and I have to say I have mixed feelings about it.
I must say some of the aspects of your article are really brilliant and even revolutionary! However I think you went too far with the ghost's allusion. You know what? You better remove it, because it devalues the excellent piece of writing and takes back the credits it really deserves.
Also, you should read more and provide some more accurate references AND improve your English.
BTW, your site is also very cool.

Pyramids T he spectacular pyramids that have made Egypt so famous are truly one of the world's greatest architectural wonders. One of the oldest mysteries surrounding ancient Egypt concerns the building of the pyramids. How did humans move such massive blocks of stone using only Stone Age tools? The Egyptians left thousands of illustrations depicting daily life in the Old Kingdom. Curiously enough, none of them show how pyramids were built. A pyramid is a tomb, a four-sided stone structure that symbolizes the sacred mountain, humanity’s universal striving to reach the heavens. The ancient belief in raising the human spirit towards the gods is the quintessential purpose behind the construction of pyramids. Even today, pyramids are metaphors for humanity’s search for higher consciousness. T he IMAX film Mysteries of Egypt features the pyramids at Giza , just west of Cairo. They are surrounded by smaller pyramids

The object of the Archimedia project is to allow students to understand what ancient buildings looked like and how they were constructed. It does this by displaying numerous views, plans and sections, as well as axonometric and computerized reconstructions of these buildings. The project concentrates on buildings from Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia. It is organized according to each building, and includes a description of its materials and building techniques, followed by a visual comparison of all the buildings involved.

The First Pyramids T he Pyramid Age began during the Old Kingdom (2650-2134 B.C.), when the first pyramids were built by King Djoser in the third dynasty. Construction of pyramids continued until 1640 B.C. During the first and second dynasties, Egyptian kings were buried in mastabas . The deceased were laid to rest in an underground chamber at the bottom of a shaft, and a flat-topped tomb was placed over them. K ing Djoser established a powerful centralized administration based in the city of Memphis, not far from the present-day city of Cairo. One of his officials was the famous architect and scholar Imhotep , who designed the Step Pyramid , a pharaoh's tomb at Saqqara that looks like a stairway to heaven. This tomb is an elaboration of the original mastabas, with its central burial chamber. I n the fourth dynasty, the Pharaoh Snefru built the first geometrically true pyramids at Dahshur , south of Saqqara. He started by adding a smooth casing over the steps of two pyramids that were built by his predecessors. He then built two pyramids of his own.

A large tomb-chapel of the New Kingdom has been found. The rings bearing the names of Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhesenamun, and other numerous finds indicate that the site was one of the major cemetery in the period of the late 18th Dynasty to the early 19th Dynasty. Recently a large granite sarcophagus was found in the innermost substructure of the tomb-chapel, and inscribed name "Mes" on the lid has been found. Three shaft tombs located around the tomb-chapel were excavated in Spring 1999 in order to clarify the character of this cemetery. The latest site plan has been available.
