26. Proofreading For Common Errors
Proofreading refers to the process of reading written work for “surface errors.” These are errors involving spelling, punctuation, grammar and word choice.

Proofreading for Common Surface Errors: Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar
What is proofreading?
Why should I care about proofreading, and what should I know about it?
In most college courses, instructors expect that your writing will be free of surface errors, but you may be uncertain of the rules for spelling, punctuation, grammar and word choice. The following rules and examples, taken primarily from , by Andrea Lunsford and Robert Connors, may help you find and correct some of the most common surface errors in your writing. If you have questions about these rules, consult any good grammar book.
How can I proofread effectively?
The following four steps should help you become a better proofreader.
  • Familiarize yourself with the errors you commonly make by looking over writing that has already been marked. Make a list of your errors, and check your writing for each of them. Carefully and slowly read your writing out loud. Often your ear will hear what your eye did not see.

Ready to Roll I'm back and have site-adding capabilities full restored. Our latest member: Go in Beauty - posted by emdash @ 8:05 AM Monday, June 07, 2004 A Slew of New Sites First, important news: I am heading out of town for a week and will not be able to add new sites during that time. Keep the submissions coming, and I will get to them as soon as I get back. Thanks for your patience! Also, a reminder: if you're going to use the button, you need to save it to your own server by giving it a good right-click and selecting "Save Picture As" (or similar). Then you can upload via whatever FTP program you're using (FTP Explorer is free) to the folder on your server that contains all your blog images. Your blog service or image-hosting service should be able to walk you through these steps if this is new to you. But you will not be added to the ring unless these steps are taken. You are, of course, not required to use the button. And now, the sites that have been added during the time that I got lax about updating (sorry):

Technical-writing professionals try to simplify grammar rules as much as possible, without hurting the language or putting themselves in straitjackets. Typically, they work in teams and frequently move in and out of projectsso that the same document may be worked on by different writers and editors during the space of just a few years. That's why any guidelines based on interpretation or personal style or judgment must be avoided. Interested in courses related to this page or a printed version? See the

Relevant content is the new Web-site design challenge When search engine editors review your Web site, they will closely examine the descriptive material, your content. Will they find "clunkers" (bad copy)? Reviewers can lower your ranking if the copy contains errors, or if it comes off as an ad. Worse yet, if they find little or no relevant content, they could leave you out of their directory altogether!
Copyedit.org links to the right tools to help you copyedit your Web-site copy and other writings. Our Tool Kit offers free links that we use in our own copyediting. We present the Grammar Handbook, the Hypertext Webster Gateway, the Bartleby Library, Curmudgeon's Stylebook and other links. One tool helps you implement search engine strategies.
