Biography and autobiography may be studied as literature: they contain plot, characters, settings, themes, and styles of writing. The genre describes common shared experiences: birth; the search for identity; coming to terms with sexuality; the intellectual growth; social adjustment; career development; and, death. The genre contributes to a knowledge of historical accuracy as the works provide background of the world and time of the subject. The three objectives of autobiography and biography are: to entertain the listeners; set down historical record; provide inspiration and examples for listeners and readers. The genre furnishes one person’s version of the truth. The students should be guided to discover historical, psychological, philosophical, and sociological truths to be found interpreting the information to be gleaned. The historical approach to presentation would lead students to compare the biographer’s version of the truth to the version of truth in standard works of history. The rhetorical approach would stress an exploration of point of view, and would attempt to analyze values represented in the text. Traditionally biographies were testimonials to the deeds and accomplishments, the public life of a great person; they were one-dimensional, glorifying the hero, ignoring unpleasant motives and consequence. Lytton Strachey is credited with writing the first modern biography, presenting a more balanced approach to the lives of eminent Victorians. “New” biographies showed the personality behind the public poses; a deeper character development; study of psychological motivation; being multi-faceted, more realistic, qualities of ambiguity, ambivalence, and indecision are shown. Students can readily find parallels with their own lives.

Donald Spoto, who earned his Ph.D. in theology from Fordham University, is the author of 19 books, including highly praised biographies of Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier, Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, Ingrid Bergman, and Tennessee Williams. His most recent books are best-selling biographies of Jesus of Nazareth and of Francis of Assisi. His work has been translated into more than 25 languages worldwide, and reviewers praise his "impressive research skills," "exhaustive thoroughness," and "rich language, silken storytelling and tough scholarship." "Inevitably, writing biography alters the perceptions of the writerjust as reading biography should alter the perceptions of the reader," Spoto says. "The accurate and artful recreation of a life must, at its best, take us not only into the depths of the subject but also into those depths common to all life...Never a judge, the biographer must, however, assess the connecting threads of meaning in a subject’s life, and in so doing the biographer is unavoidably led to a consideration of the inner consistencies (or lack of them) in one’s own life. The best biographies enable the reader, as well, to experience this sort of thing. That these have been among the benefits of the biographer’s work has been a great blessing in my life. I can only hope to have shared some of this illumination with my readers."

Popular Representations of Mathematicians
Melissa J. Schoffer
Despite the controversy surrounding the accuracy of John Nash's character in A Beautiful Mind, the film highlights the ground-breaking work of a mathematician who overcame schizophrenia, going on to win the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994, sustaine d for decades primarily by the care of his (ex-)wife, but also by his associates in the mathematics community, acting as an extended family to which the couple could turn for support [7, p. 456]. In the film, Good Will Hunting (1997), written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Damon plays the lead character, Will Hunting. Will, who never attended college and works as a janitor at MIT, exhibits a wealth of historical and mathematical knowledge. "He can also solve difficult mathematical problems with an ease that makes MIT's richer more educated students envious of him" [10]. After a professor discovers Will's vast mathematical ability, he bargains with him to meet on a weekly basis for mathematical sessions; Will's side of the bargain requires him to enter therapy as well; battles with the law, a symptom of mental conflicts, trouble Will's character in the film. A more extreme image of a mathematician is conveyed by the independent film, Pi, the story of Max Cohen, a mathematician on the edge of insanity. The film exploits chaos theory, the idea that small occurrences can lead to large disruptions in the world.
