Prominent Alumni: Part II
In the United States, the Pulitzer Prizes are among the most highly acclaimed forms of recognition for those in the fields of journalism and letters. The monetary value of the awards is slightsome $3,000 currentlybut the prestige value is incalculable. The awards were initiated by the publisher Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911), who sought to honor outstanding achievement in journalism and in drama, poetry, history, biography, fiction, and general non-fiction. The funds come from Pulitzer's legacy of some $2,000,000, and the prizes were first awarded in 1917. Columbia University's School of Journalism administers the prizes, and winners are selected by an advisory board based upon recommendations from juries of specialists in each field. The awards are formally conferred by the trustees of Columbia University. During its first seventy-five years, 1,056 Pulitzer Prizes have been awarded: 617 in journalism, 439 in letters and music. A Pulitzer has been said to be a "passport to the unalloyed glory of an instantly recognizable byline" for a reporter or "a can t miss best seller" for an author. For a prize-winning composer, a Pulitzer is said to open doors: "It has a quality of catching other people's attention in a way no other prize in music does," in the view of one winner. Russell Baker, the well-known columnist for the New York Times has stated that the prizes have endured "because they stood for something more than fame and fortune."

Pultizer Prize for General Non-Fiction
The Pulitzer Prizes , started by New York World publisher Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911), are awarded each year for letters (books), works in journalism, music, and the arts produced during the previous calendar year. The prizes are normally announced in May of each year. Winners receive a cash prize, a medal and/or a certificate. During some years no award was given. Started in 1962 , the General Non-Fiction winner is the most distinguished work of non-fiction (by an American author) as recognized by the Nominating Juries and The Pulitzer Prize Board. This category was introduced to be a separate prize from the previously established categories of History (which concentrates on American history) and Biography (or Autobiography).

Making the Initial Cut
The literary prize selection process Literary prizes attract attention, with the biggest ones considered among the most important literary events of the year. These receive considerable media coverage, and nowadays even the announcement of the finalists or the shortlist of contenders or, in some cases, even the longlist is a media-event, widely broadcast and discussed (and, at least in the UK, bet on). This recognition, and the publicity that comes with it, often also translates into dramatically increased sales.
The media focus is invariably on the final cut(s), and then the award itself. Almost always missing from the discussion, however, is the really interesting question: who gets nominated in the first place.
There was considerable controversy in the US last year when the National Book Foundation announced that its 2003 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters would go to Stephen King, a bestselling author whom some apparently did not consider sufficiently 'literary' for such an honour. King himself addressed the issue in his acceptance speech , maintaining that: "Bridges can be built between the so-called popular fiction and the so-called literary fiction." He argued for inclusiveness, saying it wouldn't suffice if the award for him were merely a token gesture and popular authors continued to otherwise be ignored. Specifically, he challenged the National Book Award judges, "past, present and future", to read the works of 'popular' authors: "You don't have to vote for them, just read them."

Jobs 2001 Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced The 85th annual Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism, Letters, Drama and Music, awarded on the recommendation of the Pulitzer Prize Board, were announced by President George Rupp of Columbia University. More than 2,000 entries are submitted each year in the Pulitzer Prize competitions, and only 21 awards are normally made. The Pulitzer Prizes are awarded at a luncheon in late May, about a month after the names of the winners have been announced. The luncheon takes place at Low Library on the Columbia University campus. Beginning with the 1999 competition, the board sanctioned the submission by newspapers of online presentations as supplements to print exhibits in the Public Service category. The board left open the distinct possibility of further inclusions in the Pulitzer process of online journalism as the electronic medium developed. There are 21 Pulitzer categories. In 20 of those categories the winners receive a $7,500 cash award and a certificate. Only the winner in the Public Service category of the Journalism competition is awarded a gold medal. The Public Service prize is always awarded to a newspaper, not an individual, although an individual may be named in the citation.

Pulitzer prize winners value readers
The Pulitzer Prize winners for 2004 (www.putlitzer.org/ 2004/2004.html) were announced this week. As a librarian, I am most interested in the literature prizes, and I am happy to report that we already have the winners for Fiction and General Non-fiction on our shelves. I now have the History, Biography and Poetry winners on order. An article from today's Seattle Times www.seattletimes.nwsource.com /html/opinion/2001899750_pitts11.html ) was brought to my attention, however, in which the winner of the Journalism Prize for Commentary credits his "first reader," and it is a fitting tribute to the genesis of any writer. Leonard Pitts, Jr., wrote: Idealistic young scribes who insist their work is for them alone will disagree, but a writer without readers is like shouting in an empty room. And I'm humbled to think how much I owe to all the people who've kept me from shouting into that silence all these years. It is a line that stretches from you who are reading this right now all the way back to a woman in the projects trying to get dinner on, but still finding time to hear stories about a boy who can fly. So, thank you. And thanks, Mom.

CONVERSATION: AWARD WINNER
May 5, 2003
Margaret Warner speaks with Rick Atkinson, who recently won the Pulitzer Prize for his book, An Army at Dawn.
MARGARET WARNER: The Pulitzer for history went to Rick Atkinson for his book, "An Army at Dawn, the War in North Africa, 1942- '43." It's the first volume in a proposed trilogy on the allied liberation of Europe in World War II. In November 1942, British and American forces invaded French Morocco and Algeria in a mission dubbed "Operation Torch." It was the beginning of a seven- month campaign to take North Africa from the Vichy French and German forces at a cost of some 60,000 lives. Rick Atkinson has won the Pulitzer Prize twice before for his newspaper reporting. He's presently on leave from the Washington Post to devote his time to book writing. And welcome, Rick, and congratulations. RICK ATKINSON: Thank you, Margaret. MARGARET WARNER: How did you hear the news? You were in the desert yourself.
