Migration
In the late 1990s some 3.1 million Puerto Ricans lived on the U.S. mainland, the majority of them in the states of New York, New Jersey, and Florida. In general, Puerto Ricans went to the mainland in search of better economic opportunities. Migration was particularly extensive during the first decades of industrialization, from the early 1940s through the 1960s. As people moved from rural to urban areas, the new manufacturing companies did not have enough jobs to offer. With no jobs in the cities, many Puerto Ricans left the island to go to the mainland to find employment. In fact, one of the reasons that Operation Bootstrap was successful was that hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans migrated to the mainland United States, easing economic pressure on the island. Migration also increased in the early 1980s because of a serious economic recession on the island. As the economy recovered later in the decade, emigration declined. Migration helped to relieve competition for jobs in Puerto Rico and decreased the number of people the relatively impoverished island had to feed. It also provided a source of external income as emigrants on the mainland sent cash to relatives in Puerto Rico, thus somewhat aiding the island’s economy.

Black Cultural Center ensembles to showcase Puerto Rico experience
William Caise Black Cultural Center will present "a work-in-progress" showcase to be created from personal experiences and information gathered during their research trip to Puerto Rico during October break. The Black Voices of Inspiration, Haraka Writers, Jahari Dance Troupe and New Directional Players will blend their talents and their media to create and perform the show at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29, and Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Black Cultural Center at 1100 Third St. The performance is free and open to the public. The original show will be based on the historical and cultural experiences of freedmen and Africans who escaped enslavement in Puerto Rico and Puerto Rican communities in the United States. About 40 performers and directors are collaborating on the production. "During the research tour to Puerto Rico, all four performing arts ensembles took a series of master classes in various art forms, including the bomba and the plena, two Puerto Rican dances," said center director Renee Thomas, who traveled with the group. "The master classes were instructed by the Ayala and Cepeda families who are committed to preserving history, culture, art, music, dance and other Black Puerto Rican expressions. In addition to the master classes, students toured the Museum of Our African Roots in Old San Juan and attend a scholarly presentation on the "African Influences on Latin America."

The Cultural Role of Cable Television
in Puerto Rico Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony from 1493 through 1898, at which time it came under the control of the United States. Throughout the twentieth century, the United States played a major role in all aspects of Puerto Rican life - government, economy, education, culture, etc. There is considerable debate about what the relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States should be. Politically, there are three major streams of thought: national independence, statehood within the United States and the continuation of the commonwealth status. This debate extends beyond the political realm to the cultural one as well. In Puerto Rico, television penetration is nearly universal (99%). Since the population base is relatively small, Puerto Rico is not self-sufficient in terms of television program production. Local productions are mainly news and variety entertainment programs. Many of the television programs are imported, some of which are telenovelas from Mexico and Venezuela but mostly programs from the United States. On broadcast television, programs from the United States are usually dubbed in Spanish. On cable television (which is present in 29% of all Puerto Rican households), the situation is more complicated. Geographically, Puerto Rico is situated in the footprints of satellites directed towards the United States. This means that Puerto Rico cannot receive the Spanish-language satellite signals that are beamed towards Latin America. Consequently, Puerto Rican cable television has mainly English-language channels that were originally intended for United States audiences, such as the Discovery Channel, USA Network, ESPN etc, but not their Spanish-language counterparts. Puerto Rican cable households also receive the signals from US-based broadcast stations such as

Contact us In the first detailed portrait of the Cubans of Puerto Rico, José Cobas and Jorge Duany study the Cubans’ reception and social mobility beginning with the first wave of migration to Puerto Rico in the early 1960s. Exploring the ways in which Cuban immigrants have assumed the minority role of the "classical middleman," the authors describe the combination of characteristics typical of such a group. They then delineate characteristics that distinguish the Cubans of Puerto Rico from the model.
As a result, the authors argue, Cubans in Puerto Rico will remain in the middleman position for a shorter period of time than is typical, ultimately merging into the larger society and disappearing as a distinct ethnic group, much as the immigrant German population did in Czarist Russia. This volume constitutes an important addition to the growing body of literature on Cuban immigration and will appeal, more broadly, to students and scholars of race, ethnicity, multiculturalism, economics, and immigration policy.
José Cobas is professor of sociology at Arizona State University, Tempe.

Cultural Diversity: Eating in America
Puerto Rican
HYG-5257-95
Cheryle Jones Syracuse The Puerto Rican culture includes people whose ancestors and possibly current extended family members are from the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. Their original language is Spanish. Under Spanish rule and then under American rule, Puerto Rico has never been an independent nation. Puerto Ricans are American citizens and can legally enter and leave the mainland. Migration flows circularly between the island of Puerto Rico and the mainland. Because of this circular migration, elements of both cultures thrive in both places, and a specific Puerto Rican "cultural type" is difficult to describe.
Food Habits and Their Relationship to Dietary Guidelines
The typical Puerto Rican diet has many positive aspects. This diet is high in complex carbohydrates such as breads, cereals, soda crackers, rice, and corn meal. A typical diet also includes some calcium and milk products. Adult women will drink milk in cafe con leche (coffee with milk) and consume calcium in flan (custard).
