CULTURE
Puerto Rico is a relatively small island, roughly comparable in size to the state of Connecticut. Despite its small size, Puerto Rico has a rich and varied culture. Today the island is home to roughly 4 million people. The Taino culture was the first major influence felt on Puerto Rico. It was however the arrival of the Spanish and their subsequent influence that really influenced the culture of Puerto Rico. Upon arrival the Spanish put the local Taino to work, however due to horrible conditions and disease most of the indigenous population was decimated.

The Puerto Rican Vejigante
The importance of teaching art in its social and cultural context.
By Patty Bode In my public school art room I constantly feel pressured to make the biggest splash in the shortest period of time. School schedules often pinch at art classroom time, leaving little space for in-depth studies in the curriculum of the cultural contexts that produce art making. Yet, years ago I embarked on a journey to contextualize each art lesson within the sociopolitical influences in which the art is created. I picture my curriculum as concentric circles, like a splash in a pond, with the study of a specific art form in the center, and the students' knowledge, my curiosity, and the expertise of the community bubbling outward. This process began while I was an elementary school art teacher and continues today in my middle- school art room and my summer arts camp for teenagers.

As travelers enter Puerto Rico, the exotic "Island of Paradise" nestled in the Caribbean, they become one with the beauty and energy of their surroundings. On the island, which is just east of the Dominican Republic and to the west of the British Virgin islands, a vast landscape of history, culture, cuisine, entertainment and recreation combine to provide an unforgettable journey. History Christopher Colombus landed in Puerto Rico on his second voyage to the New World in 1493. He named the town of Puerto Rico (rich port) and the island San Juan. Later, the two names were switched.

P To intervene was a "humanitarian" imperative. One Senator declared: "We intervene not for conquest, not for aggrandizement…we intervene for humanity’s sake…to aid a people who have suffered every form of tyranny and who have made desperate struggle to be free". Sounds familiar? Here is what Henry Cabot Lodge had to say about Spain: it was "three hundred years behind all the rest of the world…What seems to us brutal treachery seems to them all right". "I would like to see Spain…swept from the face of the earth", said suffragist leader Elizabeth Cady Stanton—the Stacy Sullivan of her day. Hating the Spanish was even more fun than hating the Serbs. Catholic and obviously in decline, they were ideal material on which Americans could etch their lurid fantasies. Though Americans fought poorly, they were fortunate that the Spanish performed even worse. The war was to have devastating consequences. Spain went from revolution to dictatorship to civil war. The Franco era brought a measure of stability but it also cut Spain off from the rest of Europe. Today the Spanish are once more in a downward spiral . For its part, America acquired colonies that it had no idea what to do with. Neither statehood nor independence was thinkable to the U.S. So it came up with a compromise solution. So it came up with a compromise solution. These territories would be reduced to dependencies of one sort or another of the United States.

New Book on Politics and Culture in Puerto Rico
The Puerto Rican publishing group Ediciones La Sierra announces the book, The book takes its name from the Italian marxist Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937), who enriched socialist theory with questions like popular culture, how the State and nations are formed, the organization of identities and culture, the relations between classes and ideology, cosmopolitan cultures, the relation between the public and the private, and the role of the intellectuals. Gramsci en la De Diego applies Gramsci's ideas to the present context of Puerto Rico, a modernized, urbanized and subordinate Caribbean country, which maintains a special relation with both the US and Latin America. [END PAGE 49] zone where numerous identities coexist, often escaping from the dominant norms, the essay uses and criticises concepts such as class, ethnicity, gender, nation and development. Cultural plurality among the people could be a new potency to assist an alternative political and economic strategy. The present model of industralization and urbanization by means of foreign capital being worn out, a new political leadershipfrom the popular classesis needed, putting forward for instance the ecological question and the possibilities of a Caribbean confederation. (Edil, San Juan, 1984);

        Puerto Rico today is caught between two diverse cultures and is constantly under scrutiny and judgement of visitors with only a scant understanding of the island and its people. Outsiders and especially mainland Americans will increasingly be called upon to understand Puerto Rico and her unique culture. Apart from the very obvious difference in the language, many of these cultural differences are harder to specify and quantify than are the formal elements in common just mentioned. At social and cultural levels profound differences do exist between people of different backgrounds. The Taíno culture was the first infuence in Puerto Rican culture but it was Spanish culture which most greatly infuenced the island's history until the beggining of this century. When the Spanish forced the Tainos into slavery, virtually the entire indigenous population was decimated, except for a few Amerindians who escaped into the remote mountains. Eventually they intermarried with the poor Spanish farmers and became known as jíbaros . Because of industrialization and migration to the cities few real jíbaros remain. Puerto Rico also has a rich African culture dating from the importation of Africans as slaves by the Spaniards in past centuries. The people of Puerto Rico represent a mixture of races, cultures, languages and religions. They draw their unique heritage from the Tainos, from Spanish loyalists who sought refuge here, from the African slaves and from other Caribbean islanders who came to the island in search of jobs.The Spanish they speak is a mix too, different somewhat from Castillian Spanish, with many words borrowed from the pre-Colombian Amerindian tongue right up to modern-day English.American culture has had a progressive effect upon Puerto Rican culture since 1898 but especially so after the 40's. Some Puerto Ricans are not happy with the result of that influence; others welcome it.

Edited by Barbara Yañez, Assistant WebSite Editor In spite of having been almost completely wiped out within two decades, the Taínos left us their heritage - a legacy. Traces of Taíno physical characteristics are found in Taíno descendants clustered in areas of Borinquen. The names of many towns (Mayagüez, Coamo), foods (mamey), instruments, trees and plants are original Taíno names. We have little detailed knowledge of Taíno culture, religion and daily life. What we know comes from Spanish documents and from recent excavations. Much has been said of the Taínos lately, but it wasn't until the early 1900's that the study of the Taínos took off. The origin of the Taínos was not proven until 1950 when scientists were able to trace them through their unique white-on-red pottery . Their origins are in the Orinoco and Amazon River basins - what is now Venezuela and Guianas. The Taínos began their migration, in waves, through the Caribbean Islands in approximately 900 BC. Their origins have been traced to the Village of Saladero in Venezuela. As the years passed, the Arawakans, who landed in the Greater Antilles developed a distinct culture that we now call Taíno. This distinct culture was somewhat different from the original Arawak culture and different from that of their brothers, the fierce Caribs of the Lesser Antilles.
