Puerto Rico is simultaneously the poorest territory in the US and the richest part of Latin America, and these conflicting identities ooze through every aspect of island life. Visitors looking for the 51st US state will be disappointed; the language is Spanish, parts of the island look more like developing South America than the Caribbean, and the culture is decidedly Latin. However, others who believe that they’re traveling to Latin America will be discouraged by the overwhelming presence of Wal-Mart and US flags. Only those who embrace Puerto Rico for what it is—a beautiful Caribbean island with some financial security and a spirited culture—will not fail to be impressed.

"We at The Fajardo Inn are certain that you will never find a better hotel value in Eastern Puerto Rico, if not all of Puerto Rico. But don't take our word for it, first take a look at web sites from other hotels around Puerto Rico." About Puerto Rico The true history of Puerto Rico is reflected in our literature, art, music, architecture and in our spirit. You can see it everywhere, from our oldest cities to our newest urban developments. Puerto Rico is many, many things. We hope you will enjoy discovering a few of them. Its terrain is among the most varied in the region; rugged mountains rise in the middle, quiet beaches edge the northern and eastern shores (which are lapped by the Atlantic Ocean) while in parts of the southwest, beaches give way to steep cliffs that plummet into the Caribbean Sea. What is Puerto Rico? It is an island teeming with beauty and vitality. Some of it is Spanish, some Indian, some African and some...something else. but somehow it all blends together into a culture that you will find fascinating and one-of-a-kind. There is no place quite like a tropical volcanic Island and no island in the Caribbean quite like Puerto Rico. The geography of the island is very unusual, as it encompasses distinctly different kinds of topography and microclimates in a relatively small area.

Puerto Rico Around the 60s, Rafael Aponte Ledée was in Buenos Aires at CLAEM and Luis Manuel Alvarez in Bloomington at Indiana University. When coming back to Puerto Rico during the early 70s, they were trying to start a small electronic music lab at the University. Francis Schwartz was then directing the Music Department there. And at the end of 1974 was finally bought an ARP 2600 synthesizer and few more equipments. According to Carlos Vázquez, This was the first electronic music lab in Puerto Rico.
Eduardo Kusnir (see Argentina’ section) was visiting professor at the University of Puerto Rico from 1976 to 1978. He was then teaching electronic music courses and also in charge of the laboratory. Kusnir also got some new equipments for the studio. Then he left Puerto Rico and went to live in Venezuela.
Since 1978 Carlos Vázquez have been directing the studio at the University of Puerto Rico. He is very active organizing concerts with electroacoustic music. Vázquez was also the Musical Director of three international symposiums: the first, second an third “Muestra Internacional de Música Electroacústica” (“International Electroacoustic Music Sample”) held in 1992, 1995 and 1999.

Puerto Rican media/community group urges FCC to yank license of Univision station in San Juan
From Communications Workers of America , January 4, 2005
Citing "cultural insensitivity" and failure to live up to required local broadcast standards, an alliance of Puerto Rican media unions and community groups is urging the Federal Communications Commission to deny license renewal to the island's largest television station, WLII in San Juan, which is operated by U.S. media conglomerate Univision.
The Alliance of Puerto Rican Artists and Support Groups, whose acronym in Spanish is APAGA, charged that Univision has all but dropped local production of telenovelas and game shows in favor of canned programming from Mexico and Venezuela, the source of most of Univision's production. Puerto Rican programming has dropped from about 50 programs a week down to only three since Univision took over in 2002 under a local marketing agreement with station owner Raycom Media.
Besides causing substantial job loss locally, the station's shift to foreign news and entertainment programming has had an insulting and damaging impact on Puerto Rico's culture and language, APAGA stated.

The New York Times "Puerto Rico, U.S.A." By Rosario Ferre (03/19/98, c. 1998 New York Times Company) SAN JUAN, P.R. The Senate may soon be debating a bill that would permit Puerto Ricans living on the island to vote for statehood or independence or to become an enhanced commonwealth that would eventually evolve toward sovereignty. Feeling on the island is divided almost equally between statehood and commonwealth, with independence favored by less than 4 percent of the voters. But if Puerto Ricans living on the mainland are allowed to participate in the proposed referendum, as some have recommended, they could sway the vote, because many of them favor independence. This could mean that the next generation of Puerto Ricans would be deprived of the right to American citizenship. As a Puerto Rican writer, I constantly face the problem of identity. When I travel to the States I feel as Latina as Chita Rivera. But in Latin America, I feel more American than John Wayne. To be Puerto Rican is to be a hybrid. Our two halves are inseparable; we cannot give up either without feeling maimed. For many years, my concern was to keep my Hispanic self from being stifled. Now I discover it's my American self that's being threatened. I recently was on a book tour in the United States. Wherever I went, people who knew about the plebiscite asked, "Why do you want to be American?" The question was unsettling. Puerto Ricans have been Americans for almost a hundred years. At least 6,000 Puerto Ricans have died fighting for the United States, and many thousands more served in Korea and Vietnam. My son led a platoon of Puerto Rican soldiers in the Persian Gulf war. At the time, no one asked if he wanted to be an American. He simply did his duty.

Music, food, rides and a parade are planned for the five-day festival in Providence, which began August 15.
PROVIDENCE - As the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade marches down Broad Street through the city's southern heart on Sunday, state Sen. Frank Caprio, the grand marshal, will lead a contingent of high- steppers, marchers, and "dancing horses" originally from the island of Vieques . Adding glamour will be Miss Puerto Rico of Rhode Island 2001, Charlene Cruz; Miss Teen 2001, Melody Sanchez, and Miss Enfantil 2001 (Little Miss) Ciara Montes, as they ride on parade floats. Fiestas Patronales of Rhode Island, featuring five days of salsa and sound, high-stepping marchers and color guards, rides and fireworks, officially begins today at noon, when the Puerto Rican flag will be hoisted at City Hall. "We will have some dignitaries there, and a little taste of our cultural dancing" to mark the start of the five-day heritage festival, said parade director and organizer Lydia M. Rivera. Although uncertain late yesterday, festival spokeswoman Enid De Leon said there may be a fireworks display tonight at 10. More likely, the fireworks will take place Sunday at 8 p.m., De Leon said.
