Modesto Cartagena (born 1920 in Cayey, Puerto Rico) he was "one of the most decorated" Puerto Rican soldier in history. He was raised in the mountains of Cayey in a poor family during the Great Depression. At the outbreak of the Korean War, Cartagena enlisted in the U. S. Army in San Juan.
Cartagena was assigned to the 65th Infantry, which was also known as the Borinqueneers, because it was made up entirely of Puerto Rican enlisted men.
Modesto Cartagena spent 20 years in the Army before retiring as a Staff Sergeant, in 1971. As of 2004, he lives in his native Cayey. Although long retired, he continues to be an active figure around the 65th Infantry Headquarters in Puerto Rico. He also has family in El Paso, Texas. His family, upon learning of Modesto's actions, have taken it upon themselves to make a request to Congress, that he be awarded the Medal of Honor. They have received support on this quest from the Republican Veterans Committee. His supporters argue that the segregation policy of the army, at the time, and the limited English capacity of his company members when filling out the forms for the application, resulted in the awarding of the nations' second highest decoration, "The Distinguished Service Cross".

The folktales of Puerto Rico reflect the culture of the people who have lived or influenced the lifestyle of those people living there, the Tainos, the Spaniards, and the Africans. The historical reality of Puerto Rico is that it became part of the modern world as we know it today after Cristobal Colon encountered the island on November 19, 1493. Taino stories, which would be the only authentic and pure expression of pre-Columbian natives of Puerto Rico, are non-existent. It is believed that the Tainos were Arawaks who migrated northward from South America and had been living in Boriquen for nearly 1,000 years when the Spaniards arrived. There had been other cultures in Puerto Rico before the Tainos, but they were nomads and left little evidence of their time and life on the island. The Tainos were fishermen, who eventually became farmers or hunters and established villages in different points of the island they called Boriquen. They did not have a written language and there are no written accounts of their culture or history passed on by them to future generations. Archaeologists are still trying to piece together what their lifestyle must have been like before their rapid and almost total extinction in the early sixteenth century due to illnesses and inhuman treatment given to them by the first colonists, the Spaniards.

This unit on the Taínos of Puerto Rico is designed for a Spanish for Spanish Speakers class, but may be adapted to any Spanish class above a Spanish 4 level of proficiency. Most of the Latino students at James Hillhouse High School are Puerto Rican. Their level of Spanish language proficiency varies but they share a desire to develop and refine their Spanish skills. They also share a desire to find out more about their culture. By their culture I mean the Puerto Rican culture, which includes the indigenous group: the Taínos. Part of a Puerto Rican’s identity is the mixture of races and cultures: Spanish, African, and Taíno. Felipe Dessús captures this sentiment: “Soy indio, soy africano, soy borincano.” 1 Borinquen is the Taíno name for Puerto Rico and it means La tierra del altivo Señor , or The Land of the Mighty Lord.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION San Juan - Culture Puerto Rican culture is a mixture of Spanish, African and Taino traditions overlaid with a century-thick layer of American influence. At times, parts of San Juan can seem like any US city with a large Latino population, but dig a little deeper or get into the countryside and you'll find a complex Creole culture that certainly won't be erased by the arrival of Budweiser and Burger King. The intermingling of cultural influences is so pronounced that nothing on Puerto Rico is ever one-dimensional. Spanish is the island's main language, though the local version contains plenty of English and Amerindian words. Roman Catholicism is the main religion, but it's fused with spiritualism and Indian folkloric traditions. The music you hear on Puerto Rico's streets may sound like it originated in the 'hood, but bomba shows traces of African influence, the plena's cultural roots are in Spain and salsa hails from emigres in New York. Out of boombox range, typical Puerto Rican instruments include maracas, guiro (a type of gourd used as percussion) and cuatro, a ten-stringed guitar-like instrument. Puerto Rican painters, both native and expat, are achieving international recognition. Names to look out for include Arnaldo Roche-Rabell and Jorge Zeno, as well as canonized Spanish masters such as Angel Botello. Uncomfortable with its ambiguous political status, much debate on the island revolves around questions of national identity. Though political will for independence is a slippery animal, Puerto Ricans clearly see themselves as distinct from their American cousins - and there's little doubt that the island has much more in common with its Caribbean and Latino neighbors than it does with Uncle Sam.

A Collector's Vision Below: Teodoro Vidal: Collector Lu s Muñoz Marín Exhibition Home Page The art and artifacts in this exhibition present a sampler of Puerto Rico's history and culture over centuries. They are part of a vast collection created by Teodoro Vidal (to the right in the picture), who began a personal quest in the 1950s to document the people, history, and culture of Puerto Rico from the 1700s to the present. Mr. Vidal donated much of this collection of more than 3,200 artifacts to the Smithsonian Institution in 1997. The land from which the objects came has its own rich and dramatic history. For thousands of years, native peoples named Taínos lived on an island they called Borikén. In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed there and claimed the island for Spain. It remained a Spanish colony for over 400 years and became known as Puerto Rico ("rich port"). In 1898, the United States went to war against Spain, siding with the Cuban independence army. When Spain lost the war, it lost Cuba, the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States. As a result, Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory. Today, some 3.5 million Puerto Ricans live on the island, and 2.7 million reside elsewhere in the United States. Teodoro Vidal Santoni Born in Condado to a prominent family he describes as "100 percent Puerto Rican," Teodoro Vidal earned a B.B.A. and an M.B.A. degree from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1954, he became an aide to Luis Muñoz Marín, Puerto Rico's first elected governor. He also served on the first Board of Directors of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. Collecting became his lifelong passion, and he soon began to collect objects that for him embodied the essence of Puerto Rican culture.

The Moors left many cultural influences in Spain, especially in music, language, art, cuisine, and architecture. Jíbaro music embodies a mix of the musical traditions of Spain, including Moorish elements, especially in the performance of the seis genre.
Jíbaro Music Of these, the cuatro, a kind of guitar, is most widely used today, not only in jibaro music but also in plena and others. The back of the cuatro in this case is made out of a native gourd. The cuatro, the guitar, and the güiro form the jibaro ensemble. Today, many musicians add bongo drums and bass. This güiro is made from the gourd of the native marimbo amargo plant.
Plena Plena instruments include three or more pleneras, handheld frame drums, of different sizes: seguidor, segundo, and requinto, each playing a different rhythm, and a güiro. With roots in West Africa, plena also reflects music from other Caribbean Islands and is a source of national pride and cultural identity for Puerto Ricans.
Bomba The bomba is one of the oldest forms of Puerto Rican music. It flourished wherever Africans and their many mixed descendants lived and worked in colonial plantations. Bomba provided social, political, and spiritual outlets for people with many burdens in life.

Puerto Rican Culture and National Identity
Interview with David Santiago On August 1st and 2nd, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History presented "Carnaval de Ponce," a performance of Puerto Rican bomba y plena, as part of the on-going program "Encuentros: Latin America at the Smithsonian." The group performed two completely filled concerts to young and old audiences, presenting a show of traditional Puerto Rican bomba and plena, as well as a demonstration of modern salsa dancing. In this event, we had the opportunity to talk with David Santiago, lead singer and dancer with the folkloric group and an accomplished writer, poet, singer, dancer and painter from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Clave: David, what is the purpose of your work?
David Santiago: The purpose of our work is to rescue all the Puerto Rican traditions, customs and folklore. Because we are a country under the control of the U.S., a lot of foreign music comes into our country. Besides, our plena and bomba are rhythms and traditions that are not popularized by radio, television and the traditional mass media. Therefore, we are trying to rescue our music, trying to teach the new generations who we are as Puerto Ricans, our identity, our roots.
