Tips on getting published
Publishing your medical research paper. What they don't teach in medical school. This book has been written for the clinician rather than the statistician and attempts to present technical information to assist in getting a medical research paper published. The content is most thorough and the important steps are laid out in order: planning, observing, writing, editing and revising. The points covered are comprehensive and the style is direct. The more important points are highlighted, which certainly enables a quick overview of the issues. There are, however, some deficiencies. The description and explanation of non-parametric statistics is insufficient, especially as it is common to have a clinical study population that is not normally distributed. The usefulness of non-parametric statistical tests could have been given much greater emphasis. The book could have been substantially shorter, a lot more readable, and with better graphics. Indeed, for a book that purports to provide guidance on how to present data, interpret data and lay out a manuscript, it brings into question the author's own ability to perform such a task! Nonetheless, it is a relatively inexpensive text and would probably be of use in medical academic hospital departments to guide the novice and reassure the experienced contributor. Guy J Maddern

The Tricky Art of Self-Publishing
Posted by John Hewitt @ 12:45 am. Filed under Publishing (t) By Foster J. Dickson It is commonly said that self-publishing is an option for writers whose works are not up to the caliber of the work published by commercial publishing houses. That rumor is perpetuated by the well-spring of writers who self-publish second-rate novels and little collections of semi-poetical ditties for their own friends and families. However, it is far from the whole truth. Self-publishing is a tricky game and, for some writers, a worthwhile venture to undertake. For these same reasons, book reviews will seldom or never appear for self-published books. There are whole departments in book publishing houses with people who send complimentary copies of books to reviewers, some of whom might receive 20 or more books a day with requests for reviews or for blurbs which are the quotes about the book’s content that are available on the back cover. The reviewers and major media receive so many unsolicited books from publishing houses seeking reviews and blurbs that they also opt to not deal with private individuals as a rule. Once you realize it will be nearly impossible to have a worldwide bestseller with a self-published book you can begin to understand the roles to be played if you are to be successful. The author must become his or her own publicity agent and shipping clerk, not to mention accountant; items like sales tax have to be tallied and paid. These roles, especially publicity, are hard work because the self-published writer must stick to smaller retailers and shops, choosing more non-conventional methods of publicizing, because of the limitations of not being able to work with the big booksellers. In this role, the author must be multi-tasking all the time and willing to work extra hard, treating the publication as the beginning of the road, not the end. This is not to mention author signings, which are the best way to publicize a book. An author’s real work begins after the book comes back from the printer. This is true even for commercially published authors.

by Matt Briggs, Free Press Contributor oward the end of December last year a heavy brown envelope arrived from Northern Ireland decorated with gold foil postal stamps of angels under blue halos. I found a contract attached to a boiler-plate letter addressed to "Dear Author." Domhan Books Contract - First English Language Paperback Edition. This agreement between Domhan Books and the Author in regards to the name and the name of the manuscript "Personal Archaeology" by Matt Brigs with original cover by S. McNally shall be considered legal and binding in all countries. I had never heard of Domhan Book. My name is Matt Briggs and Personal Archaeology was the name of a manuscript I had been shuffling around my desk for almost five years. I had no idea how they found my manuscript, although the name S. McNally was familiar. I had contacted Siobhan McNally, a British agent at Island Literary Agency, almost a year before. If this was the same agent, I thought, it odd that she hadn't contacted me about a publishing company's interest in the book. I ordered my book from Barnesandnoble.com. After work the next day, I found my paperback novel shrink-wrapped to a piece of cardboard stuck in a FedEx box on my front porch. My book, which I had sent into cyberspace many months before, returned bound with cover art that looked like a bad computer scan of a Hardy Boy's jacket.

Christian Book Publishing and Religious Books
A strange thing has been happening in the religious book market. Even as religion is undergoing a renaissance in America, well established Christian book stores have been closing their doors. I've seen this in my own hometown, where a store that had been in the same location for at least 30 years failed, even as the number of Christian day schools in the area grew. The phenomena has been widely written on, and the blame is often placed on church bookstores, but I think that it's also due to an influential Christian publishing company entering the mainstream with cross-over hits, and getting their books stocked in Barnes and Noble and Borders bookstores. There's also the Internet effect, which allows low overhead operations to stock very selectively and sell direct to customers.
While this phenomena is having an impact on how a traditional Christian publishing company must operate, it really doesn't effect how you'd go about self publishing a Christian book. The question you should answer for yourself before you even start the journey is "Why?" My first adventure in self publishing was a religious book, not devotional or theological, but a collection of memoir and historical fiction written by my great-grandmother in Biblical Hebrew, which I translated to English. The work took me three years, and I spent around $10,000 publishing the books, and later giving them away when I couldn't sell them. The motivation was never truly commercial, it was something I started on and felt I had to finish, and I'm happy now that her works are available online for anybody with an
