If you are a new author who has just finished your first book, or perhaps only thinks about writing one, chances are you could use some advice on how to go about getting it published. In this article, we will discuss how to look for a publisher, how to approach one, what a literary agent can do for you, and other related things. For a new author, trying to publish a book can be rather intimidating. Many do not know what to do and where to start. I often meet people who tell me they have thought of writing a book, but the idea of getting it published scares them off. “I’ve got something to share,” they say, “and I’m pretty sure I could write it down well enough. But I wouldn’t know the first thing about publishing it.” Some are even certain that they’ve got no chance of ever getting published because they are “a nobody,” a person with no writing credentials, no experience, no established name. The latter is a legitimate concern. It is pretty hard for a newbie to make it in the world of book publishing. But here is the good news: no one is born with credentials and experience, every writer had to begin somewhere. Credentials can be earned. Yes, you will have to learn a lot and work hard, but if you are determined to succeed as an author, you have a chance. If your book was worth writing, it is worth fighting for, wouldn’t you agree?

Getting Published Comic Books
posted October 10, 2004
Comic book companies fall into two camps. Several companies use talent to work on books they put together in-house in the service of licensed properties. This is the assembly-line way of doing comics most Americans think of as standard comic book production, where various people take on specific tasks assigned to them. Marvel hires outside contractors to write and draw the various Spider-Man books, for instance; ditto DC and Superman . Those companies pay their creators a page rate and if the book sells enough copies, there is generally a royalties program that kicks in. The company in most cases tends to retain ownership of the property, although some high-profile creators may share in the ownership of a character or two or participate in all future profits derived from them.
Other comic book companies operate more like book publishers. They take comics wholly created by either one individual or a few working together and sell them through their various distribution channels. They pay the creators a percentage of the money the publication brings in. If there is more than one person involved, they are partners going in rather than brought together by the company, and work out whatever split in the book's profits are appropriate (many creators working at such companies are one-man gangs, writing, drawing and inking their comics books entirely from scratch). Depending on the company, there may be an advance.

Chasing Rainbows On The Road To Hell

This is the kind of logic that infuriates a lot of Westerners in India. We spoilt Westerners are used to being informed that if something cannot be done, why it cannot be done, and are then given some provisional timescale as to when it may be done. Variable factors and various dependables are thrown into an equation, resulting in some form of explanation. We may or may not be happy with the outcome, but at least we then have an understanding of what is happening and why it is happening.
Printing:
contain two different shades of paper. So finally, another printer; efficient and effective. Mission accomplished!
Displaying: the books sold out in one of the shops and I wanted to make sure the shelf would be replenished as soon as possible. After all, what is the point of getting maximum publicity in the media for the book, if the shelves are going to be left bare for days on end? The shop manager: "Yes sir, definitely they have been reordered. We reordered yesterday and they will be back on display tomorrow.” Two days later, the shelf was still bare. “We will reorder tomorrow” I was informed. “You told me you had reordered two days back”, I groaned. I didn’t wait for the reply. I knew it would be along the lines of...would be, should be, maybe or might be...By this stage I had been worn down by Kaka logic.

Electronic publishing holds the promise of someday making almost any book available to any reader, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year ... at a fraction of the price of a printed book. In addition, there are no meaningful costs for printing, shipping, or warehousing e-Books, and no unsold or returned copies. These advantages are virtually irresistible to many authors and publishers. Most publishing industry observers agree that electronic books will be a major factor in the future. However, it appears that the full potential of e-publishing still lies ahead... Prior to 2000, a wide variety of web sites appeared, offering various forms of electronic books, ranging from public domain classics available for free downloading from Project Gutenberg , to commercial sites that offered new books (good and bad) in electronic form for a fee.

Read! Immerse yourself in the delightful world of picture books. Read a lot of books and then read some more. I cannot stress enough the importance of familiarizing yourself with the picture book format. Get started by reading some of your childhood favorites, then move to recently published titles. If you admire the work of a particular author or illustrator, study what it is that you like about it. Now that you have read hundreds of picture books you are ready to learn about the process. Harold Underdown's The Purple Crayon is a good place to begin. Underdown is a children's book editor with many years of experience. His website offers articles and other resources for the aspiring writer and/or illustrator.
I suggest the following three investments for potential authors and illustrators: Join the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), the premier professional association for children's writers and illustrators. The URL is www.scbwi.org

There are increasing options for publishing books these days, including e-books. The above sites have information on all of the options.
How much you are going to be paid for a 1-5 page short story is going to vary extremely according to where you sell it. A literary magazine might pay you $10, or pay you in free copies; the New Yorker might pay you $250. Some publishers pay a flat fee for stories and some still pay by the word. The online sites may be the easiest to search for exactly the right publisher who is looking for your type of story and will pay for it.

Perseverance, Publishing and the Urge to Write

Discouraging news about the publishing business has pummeled the writing community lately. Beside the frightening specter of Norman Spinrad's misadventures with his publisher, and the ongoing fracas with Bantam over the Star Wars novel contracts, other high profile harbingers of trouble for veteran and novice writers lurk on the horizon. Spider Robinson, for example, has posted an open letter about his thoughts on publishing, and none of his thoughts sound hopeful. An eleven-year SFWA veteran recently vented his frustrations with novel publishers in a resignation letter to the SFWA Forum . Paula Guran of Dark Echo also lately bemoaned the state of the publishing industry in her e-mail newsletter. For many, particularly those who earn a living or hope to in this business, things have never looked bleaker, and appearance mirrors reality well in this case. More people it seems are writing science fiction, fantasy and horror than ever, and fewer places accept the work. The cutbacks in "mid-list" authors in the book publishing market, and the disappearance of major short story markets are well documented. Because of these trends, numerous authors and want-to-be authors are despairing. Comments like, "You have to know someone to be published," or "The editors only print their friends' work," are common. A former student called me last week, completely down in the mouth about her writing. She said, "I've been working for years and seen no success at all, just one rejection after another. I think I ought to quit."

GETTING YOUR POETRY PUBLISHED
The Poetry Book Society promotes contemporary poetry by selling the best new books, rather than by publishing poetry or commenting on work submitted to us. Please don't send us your work - we won't be able to do anything with it. However, we do hope the following guidelines may prove useful. Magazines and Competitions
If your poetry has not previously been published professionally, we suggest you begin by sending your work to a wide selection of poetry magazines and entering poetry competitions. Aspiring poets have normally amassed a reasonable body of material before feeling ready to approach book publishers. The Poetry Library in London produces lists of reputable magazines and competitions - www.poetrylibrary.org.uk

Publishing Alternatives
The traditional publishing industry operates on a costly and exclusive business model. Editors who are looking for the next bestseller rarely accept alternative voices or new-comers; in fact, they reject 98 percent of manuscripts submitted. Even when they do take a risk, they often provide little to no promotional support. Books are returned unsold and the author loses royalties. Authors who are picked up by traditional publishers frequently regret relinquishing control of their manuscript to editors. Until recently, there were few viable alternatives to this scenario. Vanity or subsidy publishing is an expensive way to have your book printed (often $10,000 or more), but typically the companies provide little or no support in distributing or marketing the book. Authors receive thousands of copies of their books, but are generally left high and dry, wondering how to sell them. Conventional do-it-yourself publishing, the way many literary greats have published in the past, requires authors to reinvent the wheel as they learn how to handle each new step of the publishing process. Many authors lack the time, expertise and resources to take on this challenge.
