Two in the Can - One to Go
The busiest season in Hub City publishing is upon us, and folks here are hard at work getting our fall titles ready to go. You can look forward to three new Hub City books in October and November, bringing our list to 27 total titles. Book designer Mark Olencki has worked throughout the year on one of our largest books to date, Wofford: Shining with Untarnished Honor , a book we are publishing in collaboration with the local college in celebration of their 150th birthday. Edited by Doyle Boggs, JoAnn Brasington, and Philip Stone, the full-color Wofford includes the work of nearly 50 writers in and around the college. Wofford , with more than 400 historic and contemporary photographs, shipped off to the printer August 11, and will be available for sale about Thanksgiving. Another collaboration project, Hidden Voices: Reflections from an Affected Community , went to the printer August 16. This book, edited by Kris Neely, is an anthology of poetry, memoir and art by clients, friends and caregivers at Piedmont Care Inc., the Spartanburg agency that serves HIV/AIDS patients. As a result of a partnership with the Hub City Writers Project, Kris served as writer-in-residence at Piedmont Care this spring. The project was partially funded by a grant from the Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg.

CEA Publications
Guidelines for Writers
The
CEA Critic is the scholarly journal of the College English Association, a national organization for teachers of college English. The CEA Critic publishes scholarly articles that read closely the texts—fiction, poetry, drama, nonfiction, and film—that English professors study and teach. The CEA Critic celebrates the importance of literary criticism from a variety of approaches and the value of reading about familiar and unfamiliar literary works. You may download a pdf version of the submission and review guidelines , or see the guidelines below. The CEA Forum Online —the newsletter of the College English Association—publishes short articles (generally 2,000 or fewer words) that respond to classroom practice or to opinions about the profession. In addition, The CEA Forum disseminates news about the organization and its regional affiliates along with other news of professional and academic interest to the association’s membership. The CEA Forum is now published twice annually as an online publication. Only submissions by CEA members will be published. See the submission address below. Archived issues of the online Forum http://www.as.ysu.edu/%7Eenglish/cea/forum1.htm

Boating Writers International
Boating Writers International (BWI) is an organization composed of freelance and staff writers in the boating industry. This year they moved their meeting to Saturday morning. A group of them form the selection committee for the Innovation Awards. Usually they are announced at the BWI meeting. This year the All Industry Breakfast was moved to Friday and the Innovation Award announcements were made there. It kind of "stole the show" from the BWI meeting. Their president, Dean Clarke conducted the meeting. He announced their new web site would shortly be running at http://www.bwi.org Greg Proteau of the NMMA spoke and passed out some materials on the California emissions situation and MTBE. Seemed as if he was trying to encourage us to write about the issue, but he never came right out and said what he wanted. He said that MTBE was a carcinogen. Per my recollection it is suspected of being one and I think it probably is, but I do not think it has been proved. I would not be telling people it was, if it has not been proven. After the meeting told him we had a California MTBE Coverage on our web site.

Always Now by Margaret Avison
`Margaret Avison is a national treasure. For many decades she has forged a way to write, against the grain, some of the most humane, sweet and profound poetry of our time.' (judges' citation, on presenting the 2003 Griffin Prize for Poetry) Volume Three will be released in February, 2005. For an introduction to the work of Margaret Avison, see "Poets Learn from Poetry" Emma's Hands by Mary Swan, and So Beautiful by Ramona Dearing were both included on `The Globe 100' seventh annual list of the year's best books (27 November, 2004). `Imagine a small publisher that not only cares about good writing, but also goes to immense lengths to make that writing accessible in permanent, beautiful form. Imagine a small publisher that, instead of gluing its pages into the spines of books (thereby making it likely that the book will one day disintegrate), sews the pages together so that they'll never fall apart. Imagine a small publisher dedicated both to discovering new, young writers and to reprinting the best Canadian literature from the past. ... You're imagining The Porcupine's Quill.' - Mark Abley, The Montreal Gazette
