Writing Contests
There are hundreds of literary contests, online and off. Most are real; some are even prestigious. But many are fake. And of the legitimate ones, few are important enough to provide a meaningful addition to your writing resume.
Contest Fakes
Fake contests come in many different guises, but they all have a common goalto take your money.
Some are outright scams. For instance, one fee-charging literary agency advertises a contest where the prize is agency representation. Representation is indeed offered (to everyone who enters), but the catch is that it comes with a hefty editing fee attached. Another agency uses a false name to run its contestentrants are told that even though they didn't win their work is "exceptional", and referred to the agency, which charges an up-front fee.
Other contests are run by questionable publishers. Often the prize is a book contract, and the winners don't find out until afterward that they must pay a fee for publication, or agree to pre-purchase large numbers of books, or pay the publisher for a publicity campaign (a good reason never to enter a contest that doesn't allow you to refuse a contract if it's offered). Or the publisher may give the list of entrants to a vanity publishing service or a fee-charging literary agency, which then sends out solicitations and pays the first publisher a kickback if any of the entrants bite.

HOW TO EXPOSE NEW WRITERS: ONLINE VERSUS PRINT MAGAZINES

So you're a new writer who just finished a short story or poem poised to knock western civilization onto its butt. Trouble is, you're uncertain what to do with it. In your innocence you go to an online discussion board and ask, Where's the best place for a new writer to get published in print or online magazines? Suddenly hell's bells, fireworks and exploding egos. Without knowing it, the new writer has wandering into one of the most argued-about issues in modern literature. Forget debates on first-person present tense narratives or the latest round in the Oprah-Franzen fight. If you really want to start a screaming match simply ask if online magazines are the equal of print publications. I began thinking on this subject after receiving an e-mail from Maryanne Stahl, an author I published in the fall 2001 issue of storySouth . According to Maryanne, the editor of an upcoming anthology (to be published by Crown/Random House) saw her story in storySouth and liked it so much that this editor contacted Maryanne and asked her to submit some work to the anthology.

Welcome to the Durham Writers' Website
This has been set up to celebrate 10 years of the creative writing group's existence. We are mixed not only by gender but also by age, interests and outlook. We offer each other support and encouragement as well as criticism. Our formal meetings are held under the auspices of the W.E.A. and led by well-known local poet and teacher, Jackie Litherland. Our inspiration comes from a wide variety of sources such as Basil Bunting, Sylvia Plath, Lycra, the Greeks and fell-walking. At other times we meet informally to discuss work in progress, attend courses and once a year give a reading. Why don't you- You are the visitor since 14 May 2000 Financial assistance from Durham City Arts has made this website possible, and is gratefully acknowledged. Web site design by Roger Cornwell . Getting Published on the Internet for Beginners
By Gregory A. Knollenberg Whether you want to get published for fun or for profit, aiming to get published online is a worthwhile endeavor. For beginners, Internet publications offer a chance to get published in small niche publications with a worldwide audience. You Have an Advantage If you have a computer and Internet access, you already have a big advantage. You don't even have to worry about rushing; you already are a step ahead of those who will come online later. There are plenty of markets online. Many of them focus on small niches, which makes your chances of getting published even greater if you have a speciality. You are not going to find a richer resource of publications anywhere that is easier to access than on the Web. However, you do need to approach submitting to online publications a little differently than you would submitting to offline publications. Why Should I?
