CHANGING PUBLIC ATTITUDES TO CLIMATE CHANGE The announcement follows a report from consultants Futerra, who were asked to develop an evidence-based strategy, addressing public attitudes as a key step towards achieving the UK's climate change targets. The initiative will focus strongly on communicating at a local and regional level, where the evidence suggests is can be most effective. Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: "Evidence suggests that we need to engage people close to home if we are going to succeed in changing attitudes to climate change. "We need people to understand that climate change is happening here and now, that it will affect all of us, and that there are things we can each do to help reduce our personal contribution to climate change. "It is essential to deepen popular understanding and support for action on climate change, to complement the work we are doing at a national and international level.

Study by USC Strategic PR Center, Sponsored by the Council of PR Firms, Shows Robust CEO Commitment, Budgets, and Staffing LOS ANGELES, CA (May 23, 2005) - 2004 was a "Bounce Back" year that saw strong growth in many key indicators of health for the PR profession, according to GAP III, the third annual Public Relations Generally Accepted Practices Study, published by the USC Annenberg Strategic Public Relations Center (SPRC) and sponsored by the Council of Public Relations Firms. A total of 347 senior-level practitioners from companies, government agencies, and non-profit agencies responded to GAP III, which was underwritten by the Council of Public Relations Firms. The annual GAP study is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive, in-depth look at the health of the PR profession. In 2003's GAP II Study, the authors reported that, like many sectors of the economy, the PR industry had suffered through a significant downturn resulting from economic uncertainties, concern over terrorism, and the war in Iraq. SPRC researchers now believe that the subsequent improvement in the business environment, coupled with the increasingly important role of sophisticated communications strategies in the new era of transparency, may serve as a springboard into a period of added growth and importance for the profession.

    • The Disengagement and its News Coverage
      July 2005
A majority of the public believe that the settlements should not have been established in Gaza and that they aggravate the security situation. 75% think that the disengagement will be implemented.
However, a majority also think that news coverage of the disengagement significantly intensifies the tension in Israeli society.
A majority of the public (57%) think that “upon retrospection” Israel should not have established any settlements in Gaza, while only 37% agree that it was necessary to do so. A majority (52%) also claim that settlements in the Gaza Strip did not ease, but rather aggravated the security situation. On the other hand, a decisive majority (65%) do believe that settlement in the Gaza Strip was undertaken by settlers who had Zionist motives.
These findings are part of a comprehensive study of the disengagement and its news coverage being undertaken at the present time by the Tel Aviv University Herzog Institute for Media, Society, and Politics, as part of the ongoing series of studies of the Index of Public Confidence in News Media.
The study found that the degree of support for the disengagement plan is significantly greater than opposition to it and even opponents think that there is a broad acceptance of the plan among the Israeli public. Interestingly, support for the plan would increase from 48% (versus 39% who oppose) to 52% if disengagement did not include settlements in northern Samaria; that is, had the plan included the Gaza Strip only. And, the rate of support for the plan would rise to 63% if the pull out would have take place as part of an agreement with the Palestinians, and not as a unilateral action.
