Network Into Marketing, Advertising, and Public Relations Careers
Besides taking classes in marketing, advertising, or public relations, what have you done to prepare yourself for a successful transition from student to professional? According to Ginny Shipe, director of professional development and member services for the American Marketing Association (AMA), it’s best to start early on career plans, but you can take steps as a junior or senior to become a professional before you collect your diploma. Network and learn How can you become a professional when you devote most of your time to classes? One step that can take you far is joining relevant professional societies. Many professional organizations have student chapters that offer career-oriented activities and give you opportunities to meet experienced professionals. The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and student chapters of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) and the AMA are three examples of groups you can join at any time during your education. Most offer internship and mentoring programs and competitions that help you learn about the field and build your portfolio while you’re still in school. Richard George, director of public relations, Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), emphasizes that internships are “almost mandatory” to get entry-level jobs because there are so many qualified college graduates who want PR jobs. PRSSA sponsors scholarship and internship programs and a case study competition each year.

Advertising

Ever want to improve the way ads run on TV? Or the radio, the 'net or on billboards? How about helping manage the rollout of new products and working to improve the perception of those products by the media? If these possibilities interest you, then you could be well suited to a career in advertising or public relations (PR). The core activity is to take a product whether it be Snapple or Caterpillar heavy machinery and construct promotional campaigns that get people excited about the product. On the PR side you will help to manage the perception of the products. Of course, PR is about much more as well. PR firms help companies, non-profits and governments manage everything from speeches and the look of brochures to major crises. Sometimes it's hard to tell where PR and advertising are different. These days, in fact, many organizations in the business refer to themselves as "strategic marketing communications consultants." Overstretched or not, there's no doubt that this field will continue to change, offering tremendous opportunities to someone with an interest in the area.

RSS and Online News Readership: a perfect tautology
From Steve, a perfect example of a tautology : "RSS users are significantly more engaged in online news than non-users, visiting an average of 10.6 news sites compared with 3.4 news sites for non-users." (from Nielsen//NetRatings The hyping of technology aside, what does this mean for the public discourse? I'm a little startled that the average online citizen visits 3.4 news sites. In a world where, before Tim Berners-Lee, people used to be wed for life to one newspaper, 3.4 should indicate a broadening interest in the affairs of business, the state and the community. Or are all those sites of similar political and philosophical bent - only reinforcing existing preconceptions and perceptions?
