COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT This chapter reviews the Dripping Springs Independent School District's (DSISD) community involvement function in three sections:
A. Communications and Public Relations B. Community and Business Involvement C. Parental Involvement
C. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Research studies confirm that parent involvement improves student achievement. DSISD parents volunteer primarily through the PTA/PTOs at each campus. Each PTA/PTO has at least one designated volunteer who directs and coordinates all parent activities on campus. Each campus has volunteers sign-in at the front desk of the campus. The sign-in sheets provide a way to monitor the volunteers at each school and the number of hours each volunteer works. Parents participate in district planning, support booster clubs, serve as teacher assistants and volunteer on committees that organize fundraisers (such as the butterfly garden, fall fair and talent show) or support school or PTA/PTO programs (such as membership, newsletter, science enrichment and TAAS test. PTA/PTO and boosters clubs provide extra money and support to schools and teachers. When the primary school had to be evacuated because of the mold problem, teachers had to leave behind educational materials to prevent further mold contamination. Parents and community members conducted a benefit fundraiser for the school and raised $20,000 to replace the educational materials that had to be destroyed.

B. COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS Positive relationships between school districts and their communities increase the effectiveness of the school district and provide mutual benefits. School districts promote positive community relations by conducting regular outreach activities and working with all members of the community. FINDING RISD's Community Education Program fosters a collaborative spirit between community members and the school district. The RISD Community Education Program offers a wide variety of continuing education courses at RISD facilities and online. The director of School and Community Relations uses an advisory council of community citizens to assess the needs of the community for course offerings, recruits teachers for the courses, schedules the classes, prints and distributes the course catalogue and registers the participants. The program includes: computer courses, personal enrichment courses, youth courses, online courses; safety courses, and a Texas Cooperative Extension Program course. The program also has adult education courses to help prepare for the General Education Development (GED) test and English as a Second Language (ESL).

The Mentor Teacher: Suggested Student Teaching Experiences
Experiences vary according to the subject matter and teaching methods employed in the classroom. Completing as many of the suggestions as possible better prepares the student teacher for the first year of teaching. Mentor teachers should ask the student teacher to:
  • Make a seating chart. Give remedial help to students. Become familiar with cumulative records. Make a case study of a student. Have a conference with a parent. Discuss students with the guidance counselor. Discuss students with the mentor teacher. Distribute materials. Take roll and record attendance. Plan and arrange a bulletin board. Innovative teachers turn fundraising programs into learning opportunities When fourth and fifth graders from a Florida elementary school wanted to raise money for a Christmas charity project, their teacher saw it as an opportunity to illustrate real life lessons in citizenship and business management. Armed with cardboard boxes carrying ornaments, gifts and baked goods, Bill Snydor's 22 students went to each classroom in the school to sell their homemade wares, making change, keeping track of inventory and recording their progress daily on a chart of expenses, sales and profits. In two weeks, the Broward County students sold 1,700 items earning $1,200 for the Kids in Distress program. On the other side of the country, California teachers Bonnie McKenna and Sue DeHart shared a dream for a living science lab. So, with the support of their principal, they teamed up to create a student-run business on campus selling giant cookies one day a week after lunch.

Preface The Student Teaching Program The goal of the teacher preparation program of the University of Houston-Victoria is to prepare teachers to successfully function on the school as it exists, adapt to its changes, and help to guide the direction of those changes. The student teaching experience will be more effectively and efficiently administered if those who are involved in the program are aware of the program's overall aims and procedures. The purpose of this handbook, which is part of the on-going efforts by the university, the Center for Professional Development and Technology (CPDT), the public, and the private schools, is to improve the student teaching experience in accordance with the goals of the teacher preparation program. It provides administrators, supervisors, and mentor teachers with a concise guide for the administration of the program, and gives student teachers information and guidance needed in this phase of their professional preparation. Legal Status of the Student Teacher "A person assigned to perform student teaching in a student teacher center is entitled to the same protection of law accorded to the supervising teacher and the principal of the school in which the student serves ...While serving as a student teacher, a person shall comply with the rules of the school of the board of trustees of the district serving as the student teacher center."

SCHOOL ADVISORY BOARD ARTICLE I
Name
Section 1

The name of this organization shall be the Brockton Community School Advisory Board, hereafter referred to as the CSAB.
ARTICLE II
Mission
Section 1
The mission of the CSAB shall be to develop activities to encourage implementation of established goals. These activities shall meet the educational, cultural, recreational and social needs of the community, as determined by the CSAB and approved by the Brockton School Committee. ARTICLE III Goals Section 1 The Brockton Community School Program, of which the CSAB is a part, shall foster public understanding of and participation in an educational process that provides continuing opportunities for all ages to grow mentally, physically and socially. Section 2 The Brockton Community School Program shall provide educational services, beyond the regular day program, to the residents of Brockton at either no fee or nominal cost. Section 3 The Brockton Community School Program shall provide maximum use of school facilities for the residents of Brockton while ensuring that Community School and supplemental programs are consistent with the use of these facilities in providing education as prescribed in state statutes and School Committee policies.

This is the perfect time for us to help our children take stock of their successes and reflect on where their energy could best be spent for the remainder of the school year. Communication is a key to success in many areas of life. As parents, we're in a position to help keep the lines of communication open between our children, their teachers and ourselves. Most of us greet our children after school and work with a "How was your day?" Most of our kids reply "OK," or "Fine," and then we all move on to other things - dinner, homework or relaxation. Let's try taking the time to make that exchange a real conversation. Give the kids a little time to unwind, have a snack or an online chat with a friend. Then get together with your kids, help them unpack their book bags and talk with them about the work that's been sent home for the evening.

Why Do Schools Need NNPS and Their PTA? Many schools, districts, and states in the National Network of Partnership Schools also have PTAs, PTOs, Home-School Associations, or other parent organizations. NNPS often is asked, “Why does our school need NNPS if we already have a PTA or PTO?” The answer is rather simple. Students benefit from the complementary roles of NNPS and a PTA or PTO. Together, NNPS and parent organizations help teachers, families, community members, and others increase and strengthen their relationships so that all stakeholders work together for student success. Focus on Student Achievement Often, PTAs or PTOs are parent groups that “reach into the school” to advocate for children. NNPS shares the same goals for children, however its members “reach out from within the school” to involve families and community members to support student achievement. NNPS guides school members to “reach out” by using an Action Team for Partnerships (ATP) consisting of teachers, parents, administrators, and community partners. As the basic structure for organizing a school partnership program, the ATP serves as the “action arm” of the school council or school improvement team to plan and implement activities that involve all families and the community.

Who is eligible to apply?
Partnerships between schools and teaching artists or cultural organizations are eligible.
  • Schools may be public, private, parochial or charter. Projects must serve school districts in Manhattan. Cultural organizations must show evidence of non-profit status. Partnerships must serve students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th. Individual artists may apply through a school or cultural organization.
Projects are eligible if:
  • Activities will occur during the school day (during the fall or spring semesters). They will involve at least three contact sessions between the same teacher, teaching artist, and group of students. Activities and outcomes will be collaboratively designed, planned, taught, and evaluated
