Choosing a Public School? Most people think that the school that their children will go to is a decision that is out of their hands. It is true that for most students, the school that they are destined to go to is tied to what school zone they live in. The public school system basically sets where children go to school based on where they live. If, however, you want to use the public school system and you want to find the best one for your child, consider that you might be able to evaluate local schools much as if you were evaluating private schools. Use the following steps to help you decide what public school is the best for your family and your child:
  • Step 2: Prioritize considerations. Step 3: After getting a clear picture of the preferences, find the schools that match the sorted out needs. Then zero in on the schools fitting the criterion set by you. Step 4: After deciding on the schools that fit your description, visit the schools to get a first hand assessment. No matter how much you read or research about a school, nothing beats a personal visit.

National Nutrition Month® 2005 Event Ideas
The National Nutrition Month campaign reinforces the importance of nutrition as a key component of good health, along with physical activity. Key Messages for NNM 2005:
    • Be adventurous and expand your horizons. Variety is the “spice of life” in your food choices and is key to good nutrition and health. Choose foods based on flavor, texture and colors that are tasty and healthy. Explore the wide world of nutrition by trying a variety of foods.
Treat your taste buds. You decide how much and how often. Choose foods sensibly by looking at the big picture; it’s what you eat over several days, not just one meal or day that counts. So enjoy all your favorite foods, just try eating them in moderate amounts.
Balance food choices with your lifestyle. Choosing the right balance of foods helps you get the right combination of nutrients. So balance your food choices with your physical activities to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
Be active. Be creative and enjoy a variety of ways to stay active to feel your best. There’s no need for expensive equipment or complicated fitness programs. Start by making a list of physical activities that fit into your lifestyle and schedule one every day.

    TRANSFORMING ONESELF AS A TEACHER
This fifth program in the new Michigan Gateways series marks the conclusion of our first season of broadcasts. We hope that the group of shows offered this Spring has highlighted a number of key issues that face everyone who is affected by what happens in our mathematics and science classrooms. We will revisit some of these topics when our programming resumes next fall, with thirteen new episodes. We also hope that this premier season has served to introduce Michigan Gateways as an important resource for teachers, and a forum for ideas and analysis. With the introduction over, we would like to hear from you. Your comments on our program can help us shape our series as we plan a full season of broadcasts to begin in the fall. We also plan to include a new Educator Forum feature a place to air your questions, concerns and comments about the current progress of reform in math and science education. Our address is on the back page. We look forward to hearing from you.
    Program Notes
Our series has covered a range of topics that underlie education reform in mathematics and science. This program explores an issue at the heart of any serious discussion of improving how we prepare our students for the future the need for teachers to undergo a real transformation in their personal roles as educators.

Bullying, and the harm that it causes are seriously underestimated by many children and adults. Educators, parents and children concerned with violence prevention must also be concerned with the phenomenon of bullying and its link to other violent behaviors. Amongst other things, bullying causes:
    • a higher level of student absence (28 million absences annually), a need for more adult supervision, an increased pressure on administrative time and attention, a loss of instructional time for teachers and students, an increase in gender, racial, religious, and sexual preference bias activities

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit, and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (I Corinthians 12: 4-7) 'Who am I , Lord, that I should go?' (Exodus 3: 11 a). Scripture gives us the affirmation we need: despite our reluctance or our lack of eloquence or our fear that no one will listen, God will be with us. We also have the assurance that even the smallest action on behalf of a child can have far-reaching consequences. It is in our power to ensure that all children have access to a high quality education. . .
