  • Not All Parents Are Fools by Chester E. Finn, Jr. Excerpt: "...Like so many other once-useful organizations (the League of Women Voters comes to mind, along with the American Civil Liberties Union), [the PTA has] been politicized, ideologized, bureaucratized and, at least in the PTA's case, has become part of the public-education establishment, more interested in propping up institutional claims and employee interests than advancing the interests of parents and kids. 'All T and no P' is how I've come to describe the National PTA and its state affiliates. ... I can't name a single policy issue of consequence at the state or national level where the PTA's testimony doesn't mirror that of the NEA and/or AFT.
  • Taking the Parent out of the National PTA by George A. Clowes, School Reform News, February 2003. Excerpt: "Charlene K. Haar made what she thought was a routine request to the National PTA, the reaction she received was so surprising it piqued the former public school teacher's curiosity to learn more about the century-old Parent-Teacher Association. Instead of a parent organization dedicated to the enhancement of the nation's schools, Haar discovered a group dominated by teacher unions and little attuned to the interests of parents and their children."

Thoughts on Returning to School: This vision actually is beginning to manifest. Like the “hundredth monkey” effect, it’s cropping up all over. Teens are learning how to resolve differences nonviolently and mediate conflicts for their peers; kindergarten children in suburbs and cities are speaking in "I messages," and parents around the country are learning peacemaking skills to use at home. Greater and greater numbers of people have begun asking for the teaching of peace and acceptance, not as an add-on to the curriculum, but as the foundation for success in all areas. The New Basics: essentials for a healthy future - a sense of hope - respect for self and others - healthy self-awareness - the ability to work cooperatively - a sense of empathy - anger management skills - strategies for resolving conflicts - a sense of personal responsibility for one's behavior

NEFE High School Financial Planning Program
1. Identify prospects

The HSFPP is appropriate for all high school students and can be successfully integrated into several subjects, such as economics, math, consumer/life sciences, and social studies. It is written at an 8th-grade reading level. Contact NEFE (303-224-3510; eas@nefe.org ) to see if any teachers in your area have asked for volunteers to help teach the program or to add your name to the volunteer list. To find new candidates, consider teachers your child has had, ask parents for suggestions, and seek recommendations of top teachers at PTA/PTO meetings. 2. Prepare your case
Demonstrate your willingness and ability to teach by summarizing program content and making the following points:
  • Youth financial illiteracy is rampant (share "Our Vulnerable Youth" summary)
  • The HSFPP puts curriculum concepts into a real-life context
  • HSFPP classroom materials and team-teaching assistance are provided as a public service at no charge
  • The HSFPP does not sell financial services or promote specific institutions

16. Character Education: How Do You Involve Parents And Guardians?
While it is the parents /guardians responsibility to teach these important concepts, Letters/Notes/Memos; pta/pto Meetings; School Councils/Committees
http://www.ethics.org/character/printable_involve.html
How Do You Involve Parents and Guardians? I. Whose Responsibility? A common plea heard throughout the nation is that we must put our "Children First!" That is, first in consideration for school funding, after school programs and physical protection. Politicians have been among the earliest converts to this type of thinking, as evident in the frequency with which the "educating for the future" and "Children First" epitaphs are used during election campaigns. Unfortunately, these notions are premised on the assumption that parents/guardians, as well as educators, already have all the tools needed in order to teach children how to be successful, safe and well-behaved students. For example, many parents/guardians believe strongly that no one has the right or the obligation to teach morality to others, especially to their children, citing freedom of expression and fear of excessive governmental intrusion as key motivators. While people of good intention disagree on whether these concerns are valid, the fact remains that parents/guardians believe (and rightly so) that the job of teaching children right from wrong is theirs. However, parents/guardians have a hard enough time juggling work, family obligations and the often ill-fated attempts at maintaining a social life, that they are already struggling to keep up with the "responsibility" of helping their children with homework, teaching them about sex, AIDS and drugs. And most importantly, it is probably an understatement to say that parents/guardians struggle to find the time (and techniques) to "consciously" teach their children character and moral development.

Performance-Based Instruction Using Culture Matters
Culture Here is an example of a performance task that you might assign to students after completing relevant activities and readings in Culture Matters.
Culture Unit Performance Task
Purpose:
Apply what you have learned about culture to help fellow students understand that, despite our differences, we have a common bond of humanity in our school. Standard:
National Council for the Social Studies Theme #1: Culture Social studies programs should include experiences that provide for the study of culture and cultural diversity so that learners can explain how information and experiences may be interpreted by people from diverse cultural perspectives and frames of reference. Task:
People in our school community are concerned about the tensions and lack of respect that seem to exist between individuals and among groups within our school. You are a team of cultural specialists hired by the principal and PTA/PTO to find ways to address these needs and help fellow students increase their level of cultural understanding. Your ultimate goal is to promote greater cultural understanding and respect within and across various cultural groups in our school. You've been hired for this assignment because it is widely known that you've learned a lot about culture and the skills required to understand others and cross cultures respectfully. Now it's time to put that knowledge and understanding to work. Procedure:
Divide into "Cultural Specialist Teams" and complete the following:

Education
To make sure all children are prepared to succeed, the U.S. provides free public education. This section tells you how to sign your children up for school. You will learn how U.S. schools work and how to help your children learn.
Enrolling Your Child in School
Most public schools in the United States are co-educational. Co-educational means that girls and boys attend classes together. The United States has compulsory school attendance laws. This means that state laws require all children ages 5 to 16 to attend school in most states. Check with your state department of education to find out the required ages for school attendance in your state.
You can send your child to a public or private school. In most states, parents may also teach their children at home. This is called “home schooling.” Public schools are free and do not offer religious instruction. What your children learn in public school is set by the state. However, local teachers and parents decide how it is taught. Your federal and state income taxes and your local property taxes pay for these schools.
