home programs facilities organizations ... history Welcome Welcome to the Psychology Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette! Goals for students majoring in psychology at UL Lafayette include a solid foundation for graduate study, an understanding of the scientific nature of contemporary psychology, and broad training in theories, methods, and procedures in psychology.
Psychology is one of the most popular majors in the entire college curriculum. Individuals with a B.S. degree have found employment in such areas as: teaching (day-care centers, pre-school, special education centers), business sales, management, administration, counseling (counselor, youth activities coordinator, counselor for juvenile offenders), and many other human service areas. Competition for available jobs is keen. Salaries vary with employer, location, and applicant's experience.
Recent surveys report that between 30 and 40 percent of psychology majors go on to graduate school in psychology or allied disciplines in order to achieve the applied skills and specialized knowledge necessary for many jobs in the human service fields. Graduate training is strongly recommended.
Because psychology tends to be confused with psychiatry, a medical specialty, many people erroneously assume that psychologists concern themselves primarily with psychopathology and deviant behavior. The concerns of psychology are considerably more diverse. Psychology began simply as a philosophical approach to understanding behavior and developed in the laboratory as a scientific approach toward the same goal.

Why Psychology?
Psychology is a lively and constantly changing discipline, and this vigour is reflected in the increasing number of applicants who choose to study the subject. A degree in psychology is a necessary first requirement for entry into many branches of professional psychology, such as clinical, educational and research work. However, a degree in Psychology can also be used as a passport for entry into other fields where their skills are put to use.
Why study Psychology at Exeter?
The School is based in the Washington Singer Building where it has excellent teaching and research facilities. We are a fairly large School with around 30 academic staff who cover a wide range of specialisms in the field of psychology. This is reflected in the variety of optional modules offered in the final year. The School is a friendly one with excellent staff-student relations. We pride ourselves on our tutorial system where students meet regularly with their tutors at all three levels. Tutorials are vital for pastoral support and delivering small group teaching. As well as facilitating learning by undergraduates and postgraduates, the staff of the School of Psychology are very involved in carrying out high quality research in a number of areas. The School was awarded a 5 in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). This officially recognises the excellence of international research. You will benefit from this. Staff who supervise your projects and lead seminar discussions are known, both nationally and internationally in their own fields. There is a strong emphasis within the School on theoretical and empirical contributions to the growing body of psychological knowledge and you will be very much part of this process.

    The GRE
G...R...E... Yikes! Those three letters instantly make me anxious! But before I dive into my paragraphs of advice on preparing for the GRE, you probably want to know what my advice is worth. In other words, you probably want to know how well I did on the GRE before you're going to care about my advice. Well, the average of all my scores was fell in about the 75th percentile. So I didn't really "rock" the GRE so to speak, but I did very well, and I was accepted into 3 of the 5 doctoral programs that I applied to as a result. So take this advice in that context: First, don't try to wing the GRE. I can't think of a better way to waste the $100+ you'll spend to take it. I know a few rich idiots who tried to wing the GRE and they all did worse than average. You can get practice GRE tests inside the preparation books that every large bookstore sells, so there's no reason to waste your money or demolishing your self-esteem by winging the real test. Study hard before you take the GRE, even if it's your first time. I took 5 practice tests (out of a Barron's How to Prepare for the GRE book) and found a huge difference between my 1st-time scores and 2nd-time scores. So even if you don't study anything, practicing the test might help your scores a lot (remember the idea of "practice effects" or "testing effects" from your research methods class?).
