General Cognitive Ability is Related to Success in Multiple Domains, According to Research Review Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. General cognitive ability, or g, has remained controversial since the concept was introduced nearly a century ago. Research has shown that g predicts a broad spectrum of behaviors and performances, including academic achievement, job performance, creativity and health-related behaviors. Despite this, many people, including some social scientists, continue to believe that the abilities required for job success and abilities required for academic success are different. In their meta-analysis of 127 studies involving 20,352 participants, psychologists Nathan R. Kuncel, Ph.D., and Sarah A. Hezlett, Ph.D., of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Deniz S. Ones, Ph.D., of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, set out to directly test whether the abilities related to performance in academic settings overlap with those predicting performance in work settings. To do this, they focused on studies that involved the Miller Analogies Test, or MAT. The MAT has been used for admissions decisions into graduate schools as well as in hiring and promotion decisions in the workplace. In use since 1926, the MAT is composed of analogies that require knowledge in many different areas, including sciences, literature, the arts, history and vocabulary.

XIII. Graduate School In Psychology
Before discussing such topics as "Applying to Graduate School", it might be helpful to give a brief summary of just what graduate school is. Graduate school is post-graduate education, taking an average of 2 years for the Master's degree and 4-5 years total for the Ph.D. ("doctoral") degree (5-6 years in clinical or counseling psychology). There are a number of significant ways in which graduate school differs from your undergraduate experience. First, the credit-hour load will be lighter in graduate school. Nine or twelve credits, rather than 15-18, per semester is a typical graduate load. You can, however, presume that each course will demand a fair amount of time. Second, you will take psychology courses almost exclusively. Third, your professors will give you more freedom, and thus increased responsibility, regarding the entire learning process ranging from completion of assigned work (no one will nag you!), selection of courses, class attendance, etc. In a phrase, you will be expected to develop into mature, independent scholars. Fourth, class sizes will be smaller. Some seminar courses will have as few as four students, in which each is expected to master a special topic and "teach" his or her fellow students. In lecture courses, the professor will often expect you to master the textbook, while he or she talks about related material. In addition, scholarly work in the library is often expected. Finally, you will probably experience a closer bond between yourself, fellow students, and your professors due to the preceding points and also to the smaller student/faculty ratio. Many people find that the tight psychological and social bonds formed in graduate school remain throughout their lives.

We are a long established, large and exciting department, with a considerable record in delivering high-quality programmes and courses, research and consultancy. We have many highly qualified members of staff, some of whom are internationally renowned experts in their respective fields. We run BPS -accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as offering postgraduate research studentships. Very few psychology departments in the UK offer the range of programmes that we do, and this enriches the educational environment for all who choose to study or work here. Despite our size, students are enthusiastic about the support they receive from staff, and find the department a friendly and helpful place to study. We have excellent teaching and research facilities located in a purpose-built block. The majority of subjects offered by the School of Psychology may be taken as either a single honours or part of a combined honours degree.
