  • Is graduate school really for you? This is the most important question to ask yourself as you are thinking about applying. Graduate school is a time-consuming and expensive commitment. Make sure you talk to a lot of people and do a lot of internet research so that you know what you're getting into before you decide to apply. Graduate school can be extremely rewarding, but only if you are passionately interested in whatever it is that you are interested in studying.
  • Are there any absolute rules that you can follow to ensure that you are admitted? No. No matter what your qualifications are, it is impossible to predict with absolute certainty whether you will be admitted to certain programs or not. Obviously, better students will get more acceptance letters than poor students, but factors outside of your control are going to play a big part in where you are admitted. So keep in mind that the rest of the advice on this page includes general guidelinesthere are no guarantees.
  • What are the most important strengths that an applicant can have?

Sponsored by Concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling between the Clinical and General Psychology programs. Students in both General and Clinical Psychology work closely together with faculty from both fields. The resulting interaction prepares future clinicians with a strong training in therapeutic practice while also supplying them with sophisticated research skills. It also gives students in General Psychology enough clinical background to serve them well if they seek to apply their training in practical settings. By promoting cross-fertilization between its Clinical and General Psychology programs, the Psychology department provides students with both breadth and depth of training. Some faculty members pursue experimental research; some maintain active clinical practices. The department continues the pioneering spirit of such distinguished former faculty as Leon Festinger, Jerome Bruner, Hans Wallach, Irving Rock, Kurt Goldstein, Serge Moscovici, and Solomon Asch.

The Graduate Faculty Psychology Society is a student-run organization aimed at helping students become acquainted with the New School Department of Psychology, their peers and faculty, and the field in general. The mission of the Psychology Society is to provide a social milieu as well as a forum for psychology students to express their concerns. The Society maintains an open channel of communication between students, faculty, and administration, acting as an intermediary between these groups. Ongoing activities include monthly meetings, student research presentations, alumni panel discussions, a mentoring program to assist new students in course selection, and informal gatherings with the faculty. We also publish The Id , a Graduate Faculty Psychology Society Bulletin. All GF psychology students are welcome to attend Psychology Society meetings and events.
