The process, which is part of aging and is controlled by certain genes, results in cells - and tumours - failing to respond to normal growth signals. Men with prostate cancer lack the genes that appear to mediate this process - "senescence", journal Nature reports. A New York-based team's study in mice suggests correcting this could be a way to prevent prostate tumour growth. Senescence genes Senescence is the state or process of aging derived from the Latin word senex, meaning "old man" or "old age" and is controlled by genes. Cells remain alive but fail to respond to normal growth signals. If this occurs in a tumour, it means it will not grow. For their research, Dr Pier Paolo Pandolfi and colleagues at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center looked at mice bred to lack certain genes that play a role in senescence and appear to be altered in prostate cancer - PTEN and p53.

The "Checkerboard" method looks for markers of cancer genes in multiple tissue samples taken using tiny needles inserted into the prostate gland. By building a picture of which genes are present, some denoting more dangerous tumours, doctors should be able to better predict best treatment. The Institute of Cancer Research work is in the British Journal of Cancer. Prognosis Currently, doctors rely on blood, urine and tissue samples to predict how aggressive - likely to spread - prostate tumours are. Some tumours will spread quickly and can kill, while others may need no immediate treatment and can be closely monitored instead. However, these methods are not accurate and clinicians have to rely on their judgement to decide whether to operate or not. The new Checkerboard technique will be an added help in this process.

Study: New technique offers alternative to prostate cancer surgery
Radioactive seeds are implanted in the prostate
August 31, 1998
Web posted at: 7:01 p.m. EDT (2301 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Dan Rutz (CNN) A new study suggests radiation seed implants are just as effective in treating early stages of prostate cancer as a major operation. The 10-year study just published in the American Cancer Society journal Cancer says that implanting radioactive materials called seeds in the prostate is an excellent alternative to the standard, surgical removal of the prostate. It's also far less complicated. Glen Hultquist opted for the implants to avoid a major operation. "The people with surgery seem to have a long recuperation period," he says. "But with the seeds, you're in and out of the office usually in a day or half a day." Surgical removal of the prostate has been the standard treatment for cancer that has not spread Nearly 200,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. Most doctors will recommend surgery for those whose cancer has not spread.

Vaccine, new test hold promise for men with prostate cancer
March 22, 1998 Web posted at: 11:25 p.m. EDT (2325 GMT) NEWPORT BEACH, California (CNN) Prostate cancer is the second leading cancer killer among American men and is expected to cut short more than 39,000 lives this year. But researchers have come up with two possible advances that could make it easier to track and treat prostate cancer. Details were announced at an American Cancer Society conference this weekend in Newport Beach, California. The first of those developments is a possible vaccine that uses patients' own cells, grown in their own plasma, to trigger their immune systems to attack cancerous cells in the prostate. The results of the first multi-year human trials of the procedure show that it may hold special promise for men with a family history of prostate cancer, who often have a higher failure rate when undergoing conventional prostate cancer treatments. "The remarkable thing is in men with advanced prostate cancer who have had successful surgery, radiation, hormone treatment, chemotherapy, the lot that some of these individuals have responded for very significant time periods (to the vaccine)," said Dr. Gerald Murphy of the Pacific Northwest Cancer Foundation.

Introduction
The prostate is a small organ about the size of a walnut. It is found below the bladder (where urine is stored) and surrounds the tube that carries urine away from the bladder (urethra). The prostate makes a fluid that becomes part of semen. Semen is the white fluid that contains sperm. Prostate problems are common in men age 50 and older. Sometimes men feel symptoms themselves, or sometimes their doctors find prostate problems during routine exams. Doctors who are experts in diseases of the urinary tract (urologists) diagnose and treat prostate problems.

Prostate cancer support group forms online
Yankees manager Joe Torre logs on
By Michele Dula Baum CNN.com Health Writer (CNN) A cancer diagnosis is enough to throw anyone a curve even those who should be used to them. New York Yankees manager Joe Torre a National League MVP as a third baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971 remembers feeling "numb" when a doctor told him that he had prostate cancer two years ago. "I don't know what I would have done without Ali," he said of his wife, Alice. "She sought out information, asked questions and helped to guide us through the complicated process of reaching a treatment decision." The Torres are supporting the establishment of 2Against1.com , an Internet-based support group for those facing prostate cancer and their families. The site officially launched on Valentine's Day. "When a man is diagnosed, he needs someone thinking clearly," Torre said. "I found friends who had had it only after I went public a couple of years ago."

What To Do If Prostate Cancer Strikes: A Helpbook for Patients
Why There Is Hope
Unlike breast cancer, which has recently become a celebrated cause, prostate cancer is a silent scourge. Many resources are available for men with prostate cancer, but the topic is difficult for them to discuss. Many men do not get the best treatment for their cancer because they do not act early enough. In 2004, the American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 230,900 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States. About 29,900 men will die of this disease. (source: American Cancer Society But there is hope. More cancers are caught early and new treatments are making it possible for men to live long and healthy lives following their diagnosis. By taking a few simple steps, men diagnosed with prostate cancer can take charge of their lives and overcome much of the fear and anxiety that accompany a cancer diagnosis. So, even if you have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, take heart. You will have many decisions to make, but you will have plenty of company. Ultimately, there is a good chance your cancer will be cured or controlled. Most men die with, not of, prostate cancer.

Introduction
Prostate cancer is most common among men between the ages of 60 and 80. It accounts for 29% of all cancers diagnosed in males in the United States. This means that approximately 200,000 men in the United States alone were diagnosed with prostate cancer in the year 2000. In Singapore, prostate cancer is the sixth commonest cancer, after lung, stomach, liver, colorectal and breast cancer.
Proposed Protocol
Figure 1. Proposed surgical planner flow. The flow-chart of the proposed Surgical Planner to use HIFU to treat prostate cancer is shown in Figure 1 . Pre-operatively, slices of MRS prostate images of the patient are stored into the imaging processing/path planning module in the computer. In the intra-operative treatment, the patient lies in the supine position on the operating table with both legs lifted up. A specially designed robot houses the Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) probe and the HIFU transducer. The robot first manipulates the TRUS probe to scan the prostate to obtain a series of 2D transverse ultrasound images. These images are captured at defined intervals as the probe is traversed linearly in and out of the rectum. A 3D model of the prostate can be developed using these ultrasound images. This model is then mapped with a similar model obtained from the earlier MRS images. With knowledge of the cancerous sites in the prostate, the surgeon then defines the target position within the prostate where he wants the HIFU transducer to focus on.
