Character Education
Ethics in the K-12 Classroom
Success in the K-12 classroom is not only teaching math, language, history, and science. Teachers supplement - sometimes replace - family and community in developing individuals truly prepared to live and work in our complex, changing, and demanding world. Today, life requires building relationships with family, friends, co-workers and even complete strangers. We find that the most successful relationships are based on trust and consistent ethical behavior, where ethics becomes the language of the relationship. Developing the complete person requires both academic instruction and character education. As a mentor, counselor, role model, and friend, you have the challenge of teaching your students to do the right thing. Character education can help you perform this ever-expanding and demanding role.

O ur four areas of focus in Arizona and New Mexico are: asthma, tobacco control, air quality and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. CAMP NOT-A-WHEEZE Most kids with asthma cannot take part in traditional summer camps due to the severity of their condition. At Camp Not-A-Wheeze, asthma doesn't interfere with fun. It's the only camp of its kind in Arizona, designed especially for kids ages 7-14 with moderate to severe asthma. Camp Not-A-Wheeze was created to provide a traditional residential camp experience and teach children how to manage their asthma. Each day at camp the children learn skills such as recognizing warning signals and triggers of an asthma attack and using inhalers properly. Camp-Not-A-Wheeze also improves the self-esteem of the campers. At Camp Not-A-Wheeze, the children do not let their asthma stop them from participating in activities so they do not feel “left out” or “different” because of their disease. Camp Not-A-Wheeze is proud to welcome a volunteer medical staff of about 75 professionals. They are doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, paramedics and physician assistants. Volunteers stay with a cabin group of six children; accompanying them to activities, administering medications and monitoring their health. The camp also boasts a 24-hour infirmary right on camp premises to deal with any emergency.

Program lets children 'live' slavery
Ala. camp provides uniquely intense history lessons
ALPINE, Ala. - The girl stares at the ground, the man looming beside her. Directly ahead is a path for escape. Others stand rigidly with eyes cast downward. "They're runaways, ain't they? You don't even have a concept of freedom, do you?" the man barks at her face. "You a slave, girl?" She nods, a few others sniffle. The 50 children, only one of whom is black, were experiencing the cruelties inflicted upon slaves who tried to escape north through the Underground Railroad. "Slaves had to go through that every day and I only did it for an hour," said 11-year-old Nicole Wallis, who was so frightened that she left the living history program halfway through. The reenactment at the YMCA's Camp Cosby, about 45 miles east of Birmingham, is one of several nationwide, but uniquely intense. Camp counselors attempt to give a realistic perspective about slavery to fourth- and fifth-grade students by dressing as slave traders, bounty hunters and abolitionist and sending students on a risky journey through the dense woods surrounding the camp. Uniquely intense experience
The result is a jarring, yet memorable experience that experts say can't be achieved through a textbook.
