Camps Teach Children of Potential Dangers Health/Living Links and Resources UNL County Extension Offices Current UNL Extension Spotlights Past UNL Extension Spotlights Farm safety camps and other educational programs teach children to recognize potential dangers on the farm and in the country. Sharry Nielsen, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Educator, works with a variety of sponsors coordinating programs such as Farm Safety 4 Just Kids and the Progressive Farmer Farm Safety Day Camp for children and volunteers. The training benefits children visiting rural areas as well as those who live there, she said. At camp, children can learn safety guidelines for more than 50 agricultural tasks or activities relating to animals, grain, tractors, equipment and chemicals. Since 1969, when records were first kept, 252 Nebraska children 18 and under have been victims of fatalities on the farm, said Dave Morgan, extension safety engineer.

Getting to know your pupils and suggesting camp and after-school programs can be very beneficial for you as a teacher. These programs will allow you to help your students to achieve ever-higher standards and, at the same time, allow your students to learn about themselves and become motivated learners. These after-school program and camp experiences will help your students to succeed in your classroom and the rest of their lives.
When recommending any supplemental programs for a student, you must leave the control with the parents. Both you and they know it is your job to teach their child. In order to help the parents to understand that you accept and welcome that responsibility, make it clear first that you are concerned for their child and his/her long-range success just as they are. Then it is their choice whether or not to avail themselves of your recommendation.

OCA Camp Canoe Instructor
ORCA OCA Camp Canoeing Instructor Program
for OCA Camps in 2005
It is beneficial for children’s camps to have certified canoeing Instructors on staff. The Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association (ORCA) is pleased to announce a Camp Canoeing Instructor (CCI) certification program for Ontario Camps in 2005. This new program will certify ORCA Camp Instructors to teach the ORCA Flatwater A and B programs in Ontario Camps at the waterfront. This CCI certification program will take two days instead of the traditional 5 days to train a new Flatwater Instructor. The cost of training will be significantly less than the traditional Flatwater Instructor course. This program is being introduced in response to concerns raised by the OCA about the time and cost constraints that Camps have.
What are the pre-requisites to become a CCI?
Be at least 16 years of age. Be employed by an OCA member youth camp. Have ORCA Flatwater certification. Successfully complete the 24-hour CCI course.
Who can offer this CCI course?
