62. The Genesis Of MUMPS And MUG
The story of the creation of the MUMPS programming language at The Massachusetts general Hospital, and its development into a procedural, interpreted generalpurpose programming language oriented towards database applications. By Glen Steinbach.
http://207.192.157.194/MDC/genesis.htm
The Genesis of MUMPS and MUG
When Glen Steinbach accepted the position as Chair of the MUMPS Users' Group in 1985, he delivered the text on the following pages as his maiden-speech. I've often seen parts of this reproduced; here is the complete text.
The Genesis of MUMPS and MUG
by Glen Steinbach
In the beginning was the sky, and woods, and COBOL. And Octo Barnett looked out over the lab at Massachusetts General Hospital and said, "I will have a computer system for this lab." And contracts were let and work began. But this was the time of Assembly Language and early COBOL, and the Lab System needed better tools. Three young software shepherds named Pappalardo, Greenes and Marble heard a calling and followed it to the basement of the Hospital. There, in the corner of the animal lab, stood a PDP-7, and the creation of a new software system began. The three shepherds obeyed new and unwritten commandments:
  • Thou shalt not declare variable types or file sizes.
  • Thou shalt not KILL, except for globals and variables.
  • Thou shalt not covet they neighbor's UCI.

70. Programming Language Categories
Brief text compares 6 basic language types general scripting, programmer scripting, application development, lowlevel, pure functional, complete core.
http://www.cs.oberlin.edu/~jwalker/languageCategories.html
Programming Language Categories
There are literally thousands of programming languages in the world and each has its own strengths and weakness. Many are simply for teaching or language research. These languages do not interest or concern me. They are frequently limited and almost useless. There is a certain set of programming fields/categories that I believe are currently distinct enough to have an independent programming language to represent them. Each is however, narrow enough that there is no need for more than one language. Language Role Best Candidate Scripting Programmer's scripting Better Scheme (+OO) Application Development Low-level C/C++ Pure Functional Complete Core
Scripting
The most basic need of for scripting languages is one which is simple to use because it will be used by those with a minimum of programming knowledge or in situations where cranking out code which does the job is all the matters. An example of where this language might be used by people with more of a programming background is in web scripting. Examples of languages that might fall into this category are PHP, JavaScript, Perl, and Python. VB could also be considered in this family but it is too frequently used for application development today. There is currently no outstanding candidate language for this category. When one is chosen I believe it should bare resemblance to the Application development language but with more bells and whistles to let one crank things out and make it easier.

Introduction
GPGPU stands for General-Purpose computation on GPUs . With the increasing programmability of commodity graphics processing units (GPUs), these chips are capable of performing more than the specific graphics computations for which they were designed. They are now capable coprocessors, and their high speed makes them useful for a variety of applications. The goal of this page is to catalog the current and historical use of GPUs for general-purpose computation. Contribute

An Implementation of a FIR Filter on a GPU Alexey Smirnov and Tzi-cker Chiueh from Stony Brook University have published a technical report describing an implementation of a FIR filter on a GPU. The results of the performance evaluation using a Geforce 6600 video card and a Pentium 4-HT 3.2 GHz-based PC indicate that the GPU implementation is better than the SSE-optimized CPU implementation for certain input parameters. Shut the door, paint the windows black
This from an MTV.com article on HST's suicide: The way he actually cranked out the copy, as he said in a 1974 Playboy interview, was quite basic. "One day you just don't appear at the El Adobe bar anymore: You shut the door, paint the windows black, rent an electric typewriter and become the monster you always were — the writer." It parallels my experiences of writing software pretty well. Programmers block, perhaps. Hours, days, weeks of pointless staring at a screen, pecking listlessly at the keyboard, randomly clicking in the IDE with the mouse, drinking too much coffee, engaging in displacement behaviours (like blogging) followed by a deep visceral anger at yourself, the computer, the world for being so useless. Sometimes, pulling an all-nighter recovers (or partially redeems) all that ... sometimes. Never tried painting the windows black, though ... hmmm ... Posted by daen at 02:16 PM

[If you like this tutorial, please check out my book Beginning Python This is a short introduction to the art of programming, with examples written in the programming language Python . (If you already know how to program, but want a short intro to Python, you may want to check out my article Instant Python .) This article has been translated into Italian Polish Japanese Serbian , and Brazilian Portuguese , and is in the process of being translated into Korean. This page is not about breaking into other people's computer systems etc. I'm not into that sort of thing, so please don't email me about it. Note : To get the examples working properly, write the programs in a text file and then run that with the interpreter; do not try to run them directly in the interactive interpreter - not all of them will work. (Please don't ask me on details on this. Check the documentation or send an email to help@python.org

Overview
This document is meant as a guide for someone writing a set-uid or CGI program. It covers many common mistakes and vulnerablies but is not meant as a replacement for careful checking of your code. These guidelines come from our own experiences doing security and from many sources on the net. Start by reading the guidelines for the type of program you are writing (CGI or set-uid) and then continue by reading the checklist for the language you are writing in (e.g. C, PERL). After checking your code yourself, then please send email to security@ncsa.uiuc.edu . We can double check you code for you and additionally we like to know about new CGI and set-uid programs as they represent possible entry points into NCSA's computational environment. Thank you - NCSA Security
Guidelines for set-uid programs
