http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/thepoint/evaluat.htm

Overview
Actions Resources Back to the ... Pathways Home Page The ultimate worth of professional development for teachers is the essential role it plays in the improvement of student learning. Professional development is important for every area of student learning but especially so for technology. Teachers not only have to develop new skills and roles with technology but also have to learn how to integrate it into the curriculum. Because technology affects the activities in individual classrooms as well as the entire school organization, professional development activities with technology must be monitored on a regular basis. Educators must pay attention to the impact of professional development on the job performance of staff, the effectiveness of the organization, and the success of all students. Each professional development effort should be accompanied by a well-designed evaluation plan for determining its effectiveness. Technology use in the schools can be the basis for positive changes in teaching and learning. Evidence indicates that when "used well, technology applications can support higher-order thinking by engaging students in authentic, complex tasks within collaborative learning contexts" (Means, Blando, Olson, Middleton, Morocco, Remz, & Zorfass, 1993). As with all change, however, the success of technology rests on the ability of the individual teacher to use technology in the classroom to enhance and support student learning. School districts may prepare elaborate technology plans and spend large amounts of money on equipment and software. But if professional development for the educational staff is not a distinct part of the plan, positive and sustained change will not take place and eventually the technology will be underutilized or even unused.

The Role of Administration in Professional Development
Teacher development is dependent on school and district leadership for guidance and support. Even the most well-designed plans of professional developers and reflective teachers are likely to fail without the support of principals and other administrators. Another study took a different perspective on the administrative role in the development of language arts teachers in particular. Researchers examined the relationships between district-level language arts administrators and teachers through observations of the central office staff, examination of state department data, and documents created by the central office staff (Confer, 1999). In this study, district language arts administrators valued: (1) understanding current research and sharing this research with teachers, (2) remaining grounded in the classroom by ongoing interaction with classroom teachers, and (3) "knowing what's good for students and teachers and having a passion for doing it" (Confer, 1999). Certainly administrators can either support or impede the goals of professional development for literacy educators in many ways through allocation of funds, openness to innovation, and teacher evaluation. Their participation must be a major consideration in any attempts to improve literacy instruction.

At The Princeton Review, we know that professional development is most effective when it is based on timely and relevant data, linked closely to curriculum and state standards, and delivered in time to improve student understanding before it is too late. We also believe that in an age of accountability, professional development should be effective in improving student outcomes and teacher satisfaction. While similar goals may inform the conventional school-based coaching model, we believe that it is fundamentally unable to fulfill them in a cost-effective way. Simply put, the school-based approach requires too many coaches with highly developed skills and experience in teaching (across many grades), staff development, assessment, curriculum development, and administration. Because such people are hard to find, and because they are generally offered little more than a teacher's salary, districts cans seldom provide for all of their schools, especially in math. The Princeton Review's methodology for next-generation teacher coaching addresses the limitations of school-based coaching by dividing the superset of necessary skills among three specialized teams, who together deliver professional development in collaboration with regional leadership tiers:

I researched other school's graduate programs, but none had the depth or training I needed. I have found that my CCM credentials have opened the door to numerous interviews, and ultimately played a significant role in helping me secure my current job." • Graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis in various areas of the College-Conservatory of Music and the College of Business Administration. A graduate assistantship is a year-round position which provides a monthly stipend in addition to a University Graduate Scholarship
  • Independent study provides a flexible opportunity during the school-year for a student to intern in a department of a Cincinnati arts organization that meets that student's career interests.

    Recertification Cycles
The recertification cycle starts with the notification from AVA of the CVA award based on successful completion of both credential components. Example: Individuals who were awarded their credential during 2003 will complete their first five-year recertification cycle on December 31, 2008. These recertification policies apply to CVAs credentialed in 2001 or later. CVAs obtaining certification prior to 2001 are not required to recertify. However, AVA encourages all CVAs to consider maintaining their professional development through this process in order to keep raising the standard of best practices in volunteer resources management. Individuals granted CVA status prior to 2001 began their five-year recertification cycle on January 1, 2002. Their application for recertification will be due in 2007.
    Recertification Fees
At the completion of your five-year recertification cycle, forward the required material to AVA along with the administrative fee set by AVA. Refer to the AVA website for current recertification fees.
