    Professional Development Programs
Professional Development Programs at Penn's College of General Studies (CGS) allow working adults to specialize in their fields without committing to extensive, traditional degree programs. These condensed, intensive programs include professional certificates in communication and non-profit administration. Individual, one-day courses in professional development are also available.
Certificate programs are for adults seeking to broaden their knowledge in a current or desired professional field. They are not as long as standard university degree programs and can be taken over a period of time that fits an individual's needs. The non-credit program provides the flexibility for part-time study on a rolling admission basis. No prior work experience is required, and students may enroll at any point in time.

As we move into the 21st century, both large and small non-profit organizations face increasing competition. Significant changes in funding policies by governmental and institutional sources have created an urgent need to develop innovative programs, find sustained sources of income, and develop solid organizational structures. Success depends on more than mission. Each organization needs to develop the leadership and management skills of its staff, board, and volunteers.
Penn's certificate programs in EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATION, PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION, and FUNDRAISING have been developed to equip non-profit administrators with the strategies and skills necessary to survive in today's competitive environment. Each program is designed to instill the practical and theoretical knowledge needed to ensure that all participants reach their personal and institutional goals. Please click above on any of the three programs for further information.

    General Information
    Introduction
    Introduction
The “Certified in Volunteer Administration” (CVA) credential is offered by the Association for Volunteer Administration (AVA) for practitioners in volunteer resources management. Unlike many “certificate” or certification programs being offered by colleges and universities, the AVA professional credentialing program is performance-based. It is not intended to teach individuals how to manage volunteers effectively. Rather, it is designed to measure an individual’s “knowledge-in-use” – the application of knowledge and skills by those with real-life experience in this role. This includes the assessment of a candidate’s ability to structure tasks, produce ideas and solve problems.
    The AVA Professional Credentialing Program:
    • is voluntary
    • is performance-based
    • is grounded in core competencies and standards developed by colleagues and peers in the field
    • defines volunteer administration as a profession
    • provides a vehicle for periodic updating of best practices
    • is open to individuals with either salaried or non-salaried experience from any type of organization.
