What is Chemical Engineering? Faculty Advisor:
Brian Korgel, korgel@mail.che.utexas.edu Student:
Jason Chrien Project Description:
To develop a CD-ROM to serve as a career resource for chemical engineering undergraduates, that will be titled, "What is Chemical Engineering?"
The CD-ROM will consist of virtual field trips to company sites in the chemical industry, interviews with faculty, alumni and current students, and will present a general overview of the choices that a chemical engineer has after graduation.
The student will be responsible for incorporating digital images, video, and audio into a digital presentation that will be distributed by CD-ROM. The student will also be responsible for developing a few animations for the CD as well.
This resource will provide a valuable and necessary resource for UT Austin and will serve as a pilot project to generate more substantial funding from NSF or other private sources. Title:

Unit name: Probability, Mathematical Statistics and Stochastic Processes - 2005
Syllabus:
The course provides an introduction to probability, mathematical statistics and stochastic processes for students with the relevant mathematical background. It treats the principle concepts (e.g. independence, distributions, convergence, combinatorial probability), tools (e.g. characteristic functions, inequalities), methodology for statistical inference (e.g. maximum likelihood, linear statistical methods, nonparametric techniques), and - if time permits - stochastic processes (e.g. random walks, point processes, Gaussian processes).

62: Statistics
Introduction
Statistics is the science of obtaining, synthesizing, predicting, and drawing inferences from data. Elementary calculations of mean and standard variation suffice to summarize a large, finite, normally-distributed dataset; the field of Statistics exists since data are not usually so nicely given. If we do not know all the elements of the dataset, we must discuss sampling and experimental design; if the data are not normal we must use other parameters to summarize them, or resort to nonparametric methods; if multiple data are involved, we study the measures of interaction among the variables. Other topics include the study of time-dependent data, and the foundations necessary to avoid ambiguity or paradox. Computational methods (e.g. for curve-fitting) are of particular importance in applications to the sciences and engineering as well as financial and actuarial work.

This module is an interactive tutorial which gives a comprehensive view of Probability and Statistics. This interactive module covers basic probability, random variables, moments, distributions, data analysis including regression, moving averages, exponential smoothing, and clustering. The Probability and Statistics refresher module is intended for use by DAU course participants. for assistance. The weblike arrangement of the tutorial enables the user to browse randomly from topic to topic. A knowledgeable user will be able to skip subtopics or proceed directly to an area of particular interest. CAUTION TO THE NOVICE USER: The weblike form of this tutorial tempts the user to follow each link offered and, thus, lose the thread of the subtopic originally begun. So it is advisable to limit random browsing from topic to topic when first using the tutorial. The subway lines are provided to help the user stay on the topic thread. In addition, note that the browser provides a way to backtrack through the pages seen using the "Back" button. The user is strongly encouraged to return to this page, the "Stat Home Page", from any point in the tutorial to leave a comment for the developers of the tutorial. (Click on "Comments" below.) The "house" button for quick return to this page is found on the subway map and on each individual page.

    80. Statistics & Probability
This project houses a great online statistics tutorial. Images forInstruction in probability and statistics from RL Sleight.
    http://42explore.com/statistics.htm
    The Topic:
Easier - A statistic is a fact or piece of information that is expressed as a number or percentage. The facts and figures that are collected and examined for information on a given subject are statistics. Probability is the likelihood of something happening or being true. Harder - Statistics is a set of methods used to collect and analyze data. Those statistical methods help people identify, study, and solve a variety of problems. Statistics help people make good decisions about uncertain situations. Probability is used to describe events that do not occur with certainty. People in varied occupations use statistics. Health professionals use statistical methods to determine whether a specific drug or procedure is useful in the treatment of medical problems. Weather forecasters use statistics to more accurately predict the weather. Engineers use statistics to benchmark standards for product safety and quality. Scientists employ statistical methods to design effective experiments. Economists apply statistical techniques in predicting future economic trends. Statisticians analyze data in two varying ways: exploratory methods and confirmatory methods. Exploratory methods are used to analyze what the data seem to be saying. These exploratory methods often involve computing averages or percentages and displaying the data on some type of graph. Confirmatory methods apply ideas from probability theory in an attempt to answer specific questions.
