  • Check your solutions to the homework sheets, and the practice test, against the solutions posted on the web. Marked work can be collected from the baskets on level 9 on Monday from 12.45pm. For the Monday classes (P1 and P2), marked work will be returned in the class. Start work promptly on the HW sheet (issued Thursday) for the following week. If you miss a sheet, get it down from the web straight away. You should aim, by the time of your class, to know exactly where you are having difficulty. You can then obtain individual guidance.

    Probability and Statistics I - 2003/04
    Introduction
There will be two lectures per week throughout the year, given by Dr Gerrard. In addition to lectures, you will have one small-group tutorial per week. These do not start until the second week of the Autumn term. Your personalised timetable will show you where to go and when, as well as telling you the name of your statistics tutor. Try to remember the name of your statistics tutor. Please remember the difference between statistics tutor and personal tutor.
    Tutorials
If you are having difficulties with the course, the tutorial group is the right place to raise them. There's no need to be shy about speaking up: you will usually find that half the group are having the same problems as you, but are too embarrassed to mention the fact. Another purpose of tutorials is to give you practice at solving problems, with your statistics tutor on hand to help you if you get stuck. Question sheets intended for this purpose, labelled 'Tutorial Questions', will be handed out from time to time.
    Coursework
There will be four coursework sheets made available during the year, each containing questions worth a maximum of 65 marks.

    Probability - Part I 1998/99
    Introduction
You have embarked upon a course in Probability and Statistics. The Probability lectures, one every week, will be given by Dr Gerrard; the Statistics lectures, again once a week, will be by Professor Newby. In addition to lectures, you will have one small-group tutorial per week: your own Department should have informed you where to go and when, as well as telling you the name of your statistics tutor. Some of the remarks on this page, labelled Prob only , apply only to the Probability part of the course, not the Statistics.

    Tutorial Slides by Andrew Moore
The following links point to a set of tutorials on many aspects of statistical data mining, including the foundations of probability, the foundations of statistical data analysis, and most of the classic machine learning and data mining algorithms. These include classification algorithms such as decision trees, neural nets, Bayesian classifiers, Support Vector Machines and cased-based (aka non-parametric) learning. They include regression algorithms such as multivariate polynomial regression, MARS, Locally Weighted Regression, GMDH and neural nets. And they include other data mining operations such as clustering (mixture models, k-means and hierarchical), Bayesian networks and Reinforcement Learning. I hope they're useful (and please let me know if they are, or if you have suggestions or error-corrections). Click here for a short list of topics.
    • Decision Trees. Information Gain. This tutorial steps through the ideas from Information Theory that eventually lead to Information Gain...one of the most popular measures of association currently used in data mining. We visit the ideas of Entropy and Conditional Entropy along the way. Look at the lecture on Gaussians for discussion of Entropy in the case of continuous probability density functions.
