    Research in Statistics and Probability
The section's research is distinguished by its broad range covering the gamut from applied statistics, including collaborative research projects with scientists in a wide variety of disciplines, to the methodological research naturally arising from involvement in such projects, to the extremely theoretical research in probability and statistics which underpins the whole subject area. Furthermore, this broad range of skills is found throughout the section, almost all of whose members have published in both mainstream Probability and Statistics journals. Additional research collaboration in the Statistics group is often carried out in collaborative commercial projects undertaken under the auspices of the Statistical Consulting Group. This material is usually not published. The following research projects are current:
    Stochastic geometry
Adrian Baddeley is engaged in fundamental research on stochastic geometry, and on its statistical applications to spatial data analysis and image analysis. Robin Milne also has an interest in stochastic geometry. Baddeley and I.S. Molchanov (Amsterdam) are developing a generalisation to capacities of the moment theory of random measures, with wide-ranging implications for stochastic geometry and applications to image analysis.

This course guide concerns study for the MSc in Statistics by distance learning. However, as explained in Section B4 of this guide, distance learning students are required to spend three weeks of their course at special residential study weeks in Sheffield. It is therefore appropriate to give some information about the University of Sheffield and about the City. The University is of the type known as a civic university; founded in 1905 by the bringing together of existing colleges, in order to express the pride of the local community, and to provide a local means of study at a high level. It is well established in the top rank of British universities, with about 18000 undergraduate and 5500 postgraduate students. It was the Sunday Times UK University of the Year in 2001/2, and in 2005 it was ranked 8th in the UK in a world university survey. Its main location is approximately half a mile from the city centre, on a site which is quite compact, and halls of residence are about a further half a mile to one mile away.

Undergraduate Program in Statistics and Probability Habib Salehi, Chairperson
Statistics is the study of methods of drawing inferences from sets of data. These methods are based on probability theory and depend for their application upon the existence of a statistical regularity in natural events. In the present century, tremendous strides have been made in the physical, biological, and social sciences as well as in engineering and business by the use of statistical methods and models to describe and aid in the explanation of basic phenomena. In the last few decades, a strong interest has developed in the intensive study of statistical inference aside from its uses, in the same way that physical sciences have developed aside from engineering. Undergraduate Programs The first two years of an undergraduate program in statistics stress development of a solid background in two areas: basic mathematics and computers. In addition, it is recommended that students planning to major in statistics complete either Statistics and Probability 201 or 231 in their freshman or sophomore years. The rest of the student's program involves a mixture of work selected from statistics, mathematics, computer programming, and possibly one or more fields of application. Statistics majors who plan to do graduate work should include advanced calculus in their undergraduate programs and should acquire proficiency in at least one of the following languages: French, German, or Russian.

Recently added links are now maintained automatically and indicated with the icon. There is both some redundancy (some sites listed more than once, or separate listings for different documents maintained at a single place), and some unevenness (it reflects my idiosyncratic interests) in this list, but I hope it's useful nonetheless.

Probability and Statistics This is a list of statistics resources I have discovered on the World Wide Web (WWW). I hope you will find them useful. If you know of (or maintain) a statistics resource on the Web that you don't see here, please drop me a line to let me know about it, and I'll take a look at it. Enjoy! Note: this site, and my expertise, have to do with statistical methods . You won't find any information here about:
    • Which web sites are most popular
    • Demographic profiles of computer owners or net surfers
    • How many web pages there are
Or other related questions. For answers, you might try Media Metrix or DoubleClick . I also can't tell you how many ophthamologists there are in Montana, or how many people visited Disneyland in 1997, or what the most popular brand of fish sticks is. For those, try LEXIS-NEXIS or DIALOG . Also see Paula Berenstein's nice book, Finding Statistics Online , which deals with such questions much better than I could.
