Nature of the Material
The materials below are intended for high school and college instructors of introductory probability and statistics classes. There is substantial material on how to incorporate Texas Instrument's TI-83 statistical graphing calculator in the various lessons which follow, but I hope that those instructors who don't intend to have their students use this calculator will still find some interesting ideas for use in their classroom. These materials were developed by with the support of South Dakota Governor's Grant awarded for the summer of 1998. Click here for information on the other Governor's Grant projects.
Many of the activities below have TI-83 code associated with them. When you click on a link (e.g. below) you will see a listing of this TI-83 code. Roger's TI-83/TI-83 Plus/TI-89 Code may also be dowloaded from your PC to your calculator provided you have a Web browser and a TI-Graph Link Cable with associated (free) software . Comments, suggestions, criticisms of this code are welcome at

Chances Are . . . Making Probability and Statistics Fun to Learn and Easy to Teach
Author:
Nancy Pfenning, PhD.
176 pages
ISBN: 1-882664-35-3
Grade Level: 3-12
Probability and statistics become fun to learn with engaging games and activities. Easy-to-understand explanations and creative activities give students hands-on experience with topics such as probability distribution and standard deviation. Pfenning invites students to figure out how to win a card game, the probability of coin toss, or how to project the rate of growth of a virus, and students learn how to work with Venn diagrams and Box-and-Whisper Plots as well as statistical inferences and means and medians. Probability for the Novice This unit is designed to take a set of students through the rudimentary forces that creates the lift an aircraft needs to fly through the air. The factors affecting the lifting forces are temperature, pressure, and density. The density of an air mass determines the amount of buoyant force the air mass has. The temperature determines the volume of the air mass. The pressure determines the amount of force per unit of surface area an air mass exerts on an object. The pressure of the air in a predetermined volume at a particular temperate is called the pressure altitude. When students understand how these three factors interact to create the lifting force on the airframe of an aircraft they will begin to understand the forces that govern flight. The students will then be able to predict the effect these factors cause during their interaction with the lifting force and use them to determine if a flight in any weather condition, or at any apparent density altitude, is possible.

Anyone who cares about teaching statistics should own this book. It is the fruit of years of collecting, inventing, experimenting, and hard thinking by two classroom veterans who are also leading statisticians. Buy it, read it, use it: if your reaction is like mine, you'll find lots of things that you want to try.
George Cobb, Mt Holyoke College Gelman's and Nolan's class demonstrations sound so fun and instructive they make me want to build a stats course around them. Why are students in larger than average families? Why are there fewer baby girls in China? After students secretly put sequences of real and made-up random coin tosses on the board, how can Gelman and Nolan tell which are which? How could students who have worked together on such problems not be fascinated with the explanations?
Frank Morgan, Williams College Teaching Statistics: A Bag of Tricks by Gelman and Nolan could have also been appropriately named "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Teaching Statistics, but were Afraid to Ask"! Much more than just a collection of engaging activities and examples, it also includes informative discussions of pedagogy and practical tips on everything from course organization to effectively integrating activities into the classroom to maintaining interest and motivating students. Both new and experienced teachers of statistics will find this book to be a valuable resource.

M 362K (PROBABILITY I): RELEVANCE TO FUTURE TEACHERS What is this course about? Most problems students encounter in algebra and calculus have a definite answer the ball will go 20 feet high; the cars will collide in 30 seconds. But there are many situations in real life that don't have definite answers Will it rain tomorrow? What number will come up on the die when you roll it? Probability is the study of these types of uncertain situations, where we cannot say definitely what will happen, yet can say that over the long run, a certain pattern will occur (for example, if you toss the die many times, each number will come up about the same proportion of the time.) Since these types of uncertain situations occur in so many areas, probability is important in a wide variety of fields, including weather, medicine, political analysis, business, environmental risks, semichip manufacturing, quantum mechanics, sports, insurance, traffic flow, and lotteries. Probability, like most mathematics courses you will take at the University, isn't about manipulating formulas (although you will need to do some of that, too). Probability is mostly about thinking. The goal is to learn to think logically about the incomplete information we have about the real world. For more about probability and its history, click
