The George L. Edgett Laboratory is a statistical consulting service with clients both on campus and in industry. It is currently directed by Terry Smith. STATLAB , as it is regularly called, was established in 1970, and was the first such facility in Canada. This Laboratory plays a central role in our graduate program in two ways. Many of our graduate students in statistics work as consultants in the Laboratory for some period of time, and thus expand their knowledge of applied statistics in a realistic context. Secondly, the activities of the Laboratory generate a large number of research problems, and these frequently evolve into topics for Ph.D. theses. Four cross-appointments have reinforced the applied component of our statistics program, so that the range of our research activities now stretches from theoretical statistics all the way to industrial statistics and biostatistics. David Bacon and Jim McLellan of the Chemical Engineering Department were cross-appointed to the Department in 1991 and 1997 respectively, and with them came their broad knowledge of industrial statistics and experimental design for chemical processes. Epidemiology, drug trials, clinical trials for cancer patients, survival data, are some of the areas of research covered by Miu Lam and Benny Zee. Miu Lam is cross-appointed from the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, and Benny Zee is cross-appointed from the Clinical Trials Group in the Medical Faculty.

Probability and Statistics
by Alan Barson Frank Schaffer Publications, Inc. 1995
Torrance, CA 90505
Barson also gives several excellent suggestions for extending this experiment. He suggests playing a game of hangman to see if this new knowledge assists them in discovering the secret word. Another suggestion was to examine the keys on a typewriter and explain their positioning based on this research. In the third follow-up activity the children are required to write three sentences about themselves without using any of these five most commonly used letters. I assigned this particular activity for homework that night, and many thought writing three sentences for homework would be a snap. But the next day my students came to class saying how much fun they'd had trying, although they found it impossible, to come up with three good, coherent sentences. This activity also generated much discussion.
Another interesting activity in section two is a "True-False, Multiple Choice" worksheet. The task is to speculate what the odds are at passing a true-false test and a multiple choice test by just "guessing." Your students will enjoy taking this test. The children flip a coin (heads -true, tails -false) to determine the answer, summarize this information, and graph the data. What do you think the odds are?
How many three-letter words can be made from the letters A, E, T, and S? is the initial challenge in the game "Making Words," found in section three - "Games People Win." Then, a little twist is added. You must now put all four letters (A, E, T, and S) in a container and remove three letters, one at a time. You must place the letters in front of you in the same order they were drawn. Yes, you don't always get a three-letter word! If you get a three-letter word you score a point. This continues for 20 rounds and the player with the most points wins. Our seventh grade students loved this game so much, they continued to play during recess. This is an excellent game to incorporate language skills into the math classroom.

Mathematics Institute for Prekindergarten and Kindergarten Teachers
This institute is designed to enhance participants' knowledge and understanding in five content strands: number and operation, patterns and algebraic thinking, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, and probability and statistics. Attention is focused on young children's understanding of mathematics through the use of student work and videos.
This first half of this institute focuses on developing students' number sense and computational fluency and the effective use of an instructional planning guide. The instructional planning process introduced includes identifying the mathematical content to be learned, describing evidence of a student's understanding of that content, and building questions and tasks to elicit that evidence of understanding in a way that can be recognized by both the teachers and the students themselves.
The second half of the institute incorporates aspects of number sense and computational fluency along with the instructional planning process in applications involving measurement, geometry, probability, and statistics.

These courses, organized around the content standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), will help you better understand the mathematics concepts underlying the content that you teach.
Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability introduces statistics as a problem-solving process. In this course, you can build your skills through investigations of different ways to collect and represent data, and describe and analyze variation in data. Through practical examples, you will come to understand some statistical concepts, such as data representation, variation, the mean and median, bivariate data, probability, designing statistical experiments, and population estimations. The concluding case studies, divided into grade bands for K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 teachers, show you how to apply what you have learned in your own classroom. The course consists of 10 two-and-a-half hour sessions, each with a half-hour of video programming, problem-solving activities available in print and on the Web, interactive activities and demonstrations on the Web, and questions for class discussion or individual reflection.

Course Information:
Overview of the Course Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability introduces statistics as a problem-solving process. In this course, you will build your skills through investigations of different ways to collect and represent data and to analyze and interpret variation in data. The course consists of 10 sessions, each with a half hour of video programming, problem-solving activities provided online and in a print guide, and interactive activities and demonstrations on the Web. Although each session includes suggested times for how long it may take to complete all of the required activities, these times are approximate. Some activities may take longer. You should allow at least two and a half hours for each session. The 10th session explores ways to apply the statistical concepts you've learned in K-8 classrooms. You should complete the sessions sequentially. Session 1: Statistics as Problem Solving
Consider statistics as a problem-solving process and examine its four components: asking questions, collecting appropriate data, analyzing the data, and interpreting the results. This session investigates the nature of data and its potential sources of variation. Variables, bias, and random sampling are introduced. Session 2: Data Organization and Representation
Explore different ways of representing, analyzing, and interpreting data, including line plots, frequency tables, cumulative and relative frequency tables, and bar graphs. Learn how to use intervals to describe variation in data. Learn how to determine and understand the median.
