Related Resources Exhibition Overview Exhibition Highlights Printmaking Techniques Press Materials Some 115 French 18th-century color prints, all in very fine impressions, are presented in an exhibition celebrating one of the most innovative periods in the history of color printmaking. During the second half of the 18th century in France, newly invented engraving and etching techniques were combined with new ways of printing a single image from multiple plates. Thus, for the first time, full-color prints could be created from just four basic colors: red, yellow, blue, and black. Within a matter of decades, thousands of images were produced, including some of the most complex and beautiful color prints ever made. The names of the printmakers who pioneered these techniquesBonnet, Demarteau, Janinet, Descourtis, and Debucourt, to name a feware not well known today, but the artists whose compositions they engraved rank among the most famous of the 18th centuryBoucher, Watteau, Fragonard, Robert, Boilly, among others. The prints capture the spirit of the timesthe reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI and the advent of the Revolutionin a unique and highly memorable way. The exhibition complements The Age of Watteau, Chardin, and Fragonard: Masterpieces of French Genre Painting.

Emphasis is placed on both traditional and exploratory techniques and concepts, including monoprints, combinations of print and non-print methods and photo-print processes including non-silver photographic processes. No style, technique or aesthetic approach is stressed over another, so that the individual quality of one's work is the essential measure of achievement.
UT art students, especially our graduate students and undergraduate majors are expected to work with the entire printmaking toolbox, from traditional to digital processes. Gaining a command of these tools allow the artist to choose the appropriate print medium and technique for a given concept.

http://www.kyoto-seika.ac.jp/eng/3_art/hanga/hanga.htm
Printmaking/Papermaking Department The focal point of Japanese printmaking has traditionally been the woodblock. The elements of traditional Japanese beauty and simplicity found in woodcuts have long been appreciated overseas and the medium's popularity has continued to increase. Meanwhile, as technologies in various media have gone through many stages of development and growth, modern art has been influenced in many ways, resulting in development of art forms that were previously quite unimaginable.
Comparing Oil Painting, Japanese Painting and Printmaking, we find that Printmaking is a fine art process based on plates or similar ink transfer systems and associated technology. Consequently, a very wide diversity of materials, media and techniques can be employed. Through exploration of basic printmaking methods such as woodblock, etching, lithograph, and silkscreen, students in this Department can not only acquire technical skills but also experience learning and research related to a wide range of fine art materials and techniques. At the same time, collograph, paper work, monotype, mixed-media techniques, photographic images and computer graphics can be incorporated, and their potentialities pursued.
