81. Yale School Of Art
Information on program, including typical plan of study.
http://www.yale.edu/art/paintingprintmaking.html
Instruction in the program is rooted in the investigation of painting as a unique genre with its own complex syntax and history. Within this setting, the program encourages diversity of practice and interpretation, innovation, and experimentation on the part of students. Approximately twenty-one students are admitted each year. At the core of instruction are individual and group critiques with faculty, visiting critics, and visiting artists. In addition, students participate in specialized seminars taught by both faculty and critics. The study of printmaking is integrated into the painting program, and a student may concentrate in painting, printmaking, or a combination of the two. Students work in individual 300-square-foot studios in addition to shared facilities, such as the print workshop and drawing studios at 353 Crown Street adjacent to Green Hall. The print workshop is equipped with two lithographic and two etching presses as well as silkscreen facilities. History of Printmaking
In the beginning, before the printing press, printmaking was not considered an art form, rather a medium of communication. It was not till the 18th century that art prints began to be considered originals and not till the 19th that artists began to produce limited editions and to sign their prints along with the technical information necessary to authenticate the work.
Engraving goes back to cave art, executed on stones, bones and cave walls. The duplication of engraved images goes back some 3,000 years to the Sumerians who engraved designs on stone cylinder seals. Academics think that the Chinese produced a primitive form of print, the rubbing, as far back as the 2nd century AD. The Japanese made the first authenticated prints, wood-block rubbings of of Buddhist charms, in the late-middle eighth century.
Printmaking in Europe
Printing from a metal engraving was introduced a few decades after the woodcut, and greatly refined the results. Restricted at first to goldsmiths and armorers, it soon became the most popular form of serial reproduction. The earliest dated printed engraving is a German print dated 1446, "The Flagellation," and it was in Germany that early intaglio printing developed before passing to Italy (Mantegna, Raimondi, Ghisi) and the Low Countries (Lucas van Leyden, Goltzius, Claesz, Matsys). From makers of playing cards the metal engraving technique passed to artists where it probably reached its apex in the hands of Albrecht Dürer in the 16th century.

Printmaking
Tools of the Trade
Printmaking is one of the most versatile and fulfilling art involvements one can experience. There are so many different types of printmaking that there is surely one to suit your personality and work style. Everything from simple shaped sponges and other materials to more technical etched metal platesand an ocean of ideas between the twocan be used to create controlled images, personal art statements and saleable art items. All you have to do is examine the possibilities and dive in! Supplies needed for basic printmaking include ink, paper, ink brayer (a small roller with a handle attached), and your choice of plate master. Linoleum block, wood block and easy-carve soft base materials are great for those beginning their printmaking experience. Shaping any type of sponge, foam sheet, mat board, or foam board can create simple, yet striking prints. What makes these "masters" so appealing is their availability, their ease of manipulation and the low cost. Once you are finished with the master, simply toss it away, or clean it and re-use it later. Tools required for shaping these materials might include scissors or sharp-bladed knives. Remember that the positive, or high, portion of the master will be coated with ink and leave its reverse image on the printing paper. Select a design that is full of large flat areas, allowing the shapes and contours to create rich prints.
