Overview:
The Province of Prince Edward Island in Canada is located generally north west of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. It is one of the maritime provinces at the eastern end of Canada. Statistics Canada estimates that the 2004 population of the province totals 137,900 persons 0.43% of the total population of Canada. On 2005-JUL-07, it became the first political jurisdiction in Canada whose government decided to to expand marriage to include same-sex couples without first having been forced to do so by a court. If approved, SSM would become available in political jurisdictions where about 90% of the population of Canada live. The main holdout is the Province of Alberta.
The events leading up to legalization of same-sex marriage in PEI:
2004-DEC : According to the Canadian Centre for Cyber Citizenship: " PEI Premier Pat Binns publicly states that his government will wait for federal legislation to be enacted before resolving the issue of same-sex marriage in his province. If the federal government changes the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples, Binns indicates his government will comply. "

Nov. 2002 As part of its Atlantic Initiative, the National Resource Council (NRC) is working with federal and provincial agencies, local business, and the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) to investigate the possibility of a bioresources technology cluster. Activities will focus on the discovery, development and commercialization of high-value bioactive compounds for human and animal health and nutrition. To support the process, the Bioresources Technology Cluster Roadmap (BTCRM) Steering Committee was launched in May 2001. The Committee included representatives from NRC, BioVectra of Charlottetown, UPEI, the Government of PEI, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Ocean Nutrition Canada and other private sector partners. Through an industry survey, community consultations, workshops and research studies, the Committee has recommended that the cluster focus on bioactive compounds from marine and other resources. Changes in precipitation patterns and extreme events are also anticipated. These climate changes are expected to be the largest and most rapid of the last 10,000 years and will have profound effects on our lives and the ecosystems that support us. The air we breathe
The number of "bad air days" caused by smog events is expected to increase due to climate warming. Smog is a mix of pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NO ) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), which react together in sunlight to form ground level ozone. This ozone is harmful to human health, causing impaired lung function, increased hospital admissions, and premature death. The very young, the elderly, and those with chronic lung diseases, such as asthma, are at the greatest risk.

Prince Edward Island has the distinction of being the smallest political unit in one of the world’s largest countries, Canada. "The Island," as it is known affectionately by its inhabitants, is situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the Atlantic coast of North America. At 46° North latitude, it is about half-way between the Equator and the North Pole. Despite its location some 15km from the nearest point on the adjacent mainland, Prince Edward Island will soon be connected by "the Fixed Link," a bridge, due to open in 1997, a prospect welcomed by half of the inhabitants and viewed with misgivings by the rest. In the meantime, there is a year-round ferry service, as well as excellent air links through the modern airport at Charlottetown. GEOGRAPHY
First-time visitors to Prince Edward Island are often struck by the vivid red of the soil and the beauty of the gently rolling landscape, much of it under cultivation in potatoes and grain. Because of this rather intense agricultural activity, the island has come to be called the ‘Garden of the Gulf’.
