Prince Edward Island shellfish products are world-renowned for their distinctive flavour and high quality. Products such as Malpeque oysters and PEI mussels are indigenous to Prince Edward Island and synonymous with quality.
Overview of Shellfish Aquaculture on PEI
Shellfish aquaculture activities in PEI are conducted in nineteen bay systems around the Island. Because PEI shellfish aquaculture occurs in the natural environment, the industry has a requirement for pollution-free waters, with abundant food resources.
In PEI, the shellfish aquaculture industry is largely based on the culture of blue mussels and the American oyster. Culture techniques for soft-shelled clams, quahogs, and bay scallops are also being developed.
The longline system was adopted for mussel culture in the late 1970s. The longline system consists of a buoyed backline, anchored at either end, from which mesh sleeves are suspended.
Mussel seed is either collected from the wild, or collected on frayed pieces of rope suspended in the water column. The seed mussels are loaded into mesh sleeves and suspended from the backline. The backline may be floated at the surface or weighted down to keep it a few meters below the surface.
Oyster aquaculturists use a variety of culturing techniques that accommodate local growing conditions and local aquaculture customs. Oyster culture techniques include bottom culture, rack, and bag systems (off-bottom or near bottom) and floating bag systems (suspended or water-column).

Two Hundred Years of Scottish Heritage
When members of the MacLaren, Gordon, Stewart, Robertson, and MacFarlane families set sail from Port Glasgow, Scotland in August of 1803, historical legacy was probably not their chief concern. But the Scottish culture that took root along the shores of the Brudenell River, where James MacLaren and his family settled, has become the dominant heritage not only of the Three Rivers area, but of Prince Edward Island as a whole.

Furs
Fur farming began on Prince Edward Island in the 1880s, when two enterprising men, Charles Dalton and Robert Oulton, began to raise silver foxes. Silver fox fur immediately became popular and commanded high prices on the market. Fashion then changed, and the popularity of silver fox declined in the 1930s. Breeders turned to mink in the second half of the 20th century, while demand for fox revived in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Today the most valuable ranch-raised fur is mink, followed by fox. C
Fisheries
Fishing has long been one of the island’s significant industries. The catch is not large, but the quality is excellent. Lobster is the most valuable catch, followed by other shellfish, including scallops and the world-famous oysters from Malpeque Bay. Redfish, mackerel, hake, tuna, flounder, herring, eels, crabs, and clams are also caught. A notable industry on the western coast of the island is the harvesting and processing of Irish moss, a red algae. Irish moss is processed into carrageenan, an emulsifying and stabilizing agent used in beer, ice cream, toothpaste, pie fillings, and other products.

PROCEEDINGS SPEECH FROM THE THRONE Speech from the Throne 2nd Session, 62nd General Assembly A Clear Direction... Putting Islanders First Honourable Speaker,
Honourable Members of the Legislative Assembly,
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I take great pleasure in welcoming you back to this historic chamber for the second session of the sixty-second General Assembly. This past year has been one of tremendous activity and celebration for our province.
  • My Government proclaimed 2004 as the Year of Learning and Innovation in Prince Edward Island. This special commemoration celebrates 200 years of higher education, dating back to 1804 when Lieutenant Governor Edmund Fanning set aside 10 town lots for the first college in the province.
  • This year, we celebrated the 400th anniversary of l'Acadie and hosted many wonderful events that highlighted the rich Acadian culture in our province.
  • Prince Edward Island continues to be recognized as a great island. In a readers' survey, Prince Edward Island was designated the highest ranking island in the continental United States and Canada.
  • It has been almost a year since the Canadian premiers convened here in Charlottetown to form the Council of the Federation. As Founding Chair of the Council, My Premier has demonstrated significant leadership on behalf of this important institution.
