publishes books that celebrate the spirit of place in Canada s smallest province, prince edward island.
    http://www.acornpresscanada.com/history.html
    by Boyde Beck
    Illustrated by P. John Burden
Looking for new material on Prince Edward Island? Something well-researched, historically accurate, yet fun to read? Then Prince Edward Island: An (Un)Authorized History is the book for you! Boyde Beck puts the story back in History, making what is often dry and boring into something accessible and fun for everyone. In 37 articles, he takes a look at some of the Island's most fascinating events, people, movements, and disasters. The stories are complemented by the evocative images of Island artist P. John Burden. Recipient of a 1997 Heritage Award from the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation. The (Un)Authorized History had its genesis in a regular history spot that Boyde Beck was asked to do on CBC Radio's MainStreet in Charlottetown — a spot he continues to fill, as the Island's "History Guy." While the stories reflect Beck's quirky take on history and the world, each is meticulously researched. Beck promises, "If it's a lie from me, it was a lie to me!"
PREFACE This ain't it My best friend and sometimes-mentor likes to say that the most important part of the word "history" is "story." Stories about the people, the places, the things and events that give shape and definition to the past of a place. Sometimes the stories aren't too neat and tidy. And sometimes the endings aren't particularly happy. But that's what this book is. Stories. About some of the people, places, things, and events that define the past of this place. And they do share a common thread. They're all interesting.

    Prince Edward Island
    The Land
One of the four Atlantic Provinces, Prince Edward Island is also Canada's smallest province in both area and population. The crescent-shaped island is 224 kilometres in length and ranges in width from 6 to 64 kilometres, giving it a total area of 5 660 km2. It lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, separated from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick by Northumberland Strait. Its highest point is 152 metres above sea level. The province has numerous lakes and rivers, most of which are quite small. Rich soil and a temperate climate make Prince Edward Island an ideal place for mixed farming. Half of its land is under cultivation, earning it the nickname "the Garden Province." It is renowned for its red soil, sand dunes and 800 kilometres of beaches.
    The History
Prince Edward Island was called "Abegweit" by the Micmac Indians, who lived there for some 2 000 years before the arrival of the Europeans. The name means "lying down flat," but is freely translated as "cradled by the waves." There is evidence that the ancestors of the Micmacs lived on the island 10 000 years ago, presumably having migrated across the low plain now covered by Northumberland Strait. The Europeans discovered the island when Jacques Cartier landed there in 1534; he described it as "the most beautiful stretch of land imaginable." In spite of his enthusiastic description, it was a long time before the island was settled. No permanent colony existed until the French established one in 1719; thirty years later, the population numbered a mere 700.

Prince Edward Island has the distinction of being the smallest political unit in one of the world’s largest countries, Canada. "The Island," as it is known affectionately by its inhabitants, is situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the Atlantic coast of North America. At 46° North latitude, it is about half-way between the Equator and the North Pole. Despite its location some 15km from the nearest point on the adjacent mainland, Prince Edward Island will soon be connected by "the Fixed Link," a bridge, due to open in 1997, a prospect welcomed by half of the inhabitants and viewed with misgivings by the rest. In the meantime, there is a year-round ferry service, as well as excellent air links through the modern airport at Charlottetown. GEOGRAPHY
First-time visitors to Prince Edward Island are often struck by the vivid red of the soil and the beauty of the gently rolling landscape, much of it under cultivation in potatoes and grain. Because of this rather intense agricultural activity, the island has come to be called the ‘Garden of the Gulf’.

    Prince Edward Island
On July 1, 1873, Prince Edward Island entered Confederation. Up till that time the Government of the island colony had maintained nine lighthouses with salaried light keepers and eight minor lights maintained under individual contract. An agent was appointed in the usual way, although, in their annual report for 1873, the Department dryly notes that: "this appointment was cancelled on the formation of the new Government", and that: "it is probable, with the small amount of business which this Department will have in Prince Edward Island, that it may not be considered necessary to have an officer appointed specially for the purpose of attending to it, as there will be very little for him to attend to". O tempora, o mores. But however lightly the Dominion Government might view the duties of their marine agent, an urgent problem in marine transportation, which had worried the Islanders for many years, now called for a solution. Alone among the Atlantic Provinces, communication with Prince Edward Island was virtually impossible in the depths of winter. In the days of the early steamers, it will be remembered that the Royal William had been put on the Quebec-Halifax run about 1830, and that Francois Baby had operated ships between the Province of Canada and the New Brunswick coast in the years preceding Confederation.
