Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island Mount Stewart, a village, is located in Queens County in the central portion of Prince Edward Island, SW. of Morell. Its precise location is 46'22"N, 62'52"W. "History of Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island" Excerpts taken from "A History of Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island"
Author: Franklin L. Pigot In the beginning The Micmacs...
The first inhabitants of Prince Edward Island were transient bands of Micmac Indians from the mainland. Wintering in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick where game was more plentiful, they migrated to the Island, which they called Abegweit, each summer for a season of hunting and fishing. As they paddled up the Hillsborough, the Micmacs were evidently attracted to a bank of brilliant red clay which stood in mark contrast to the miles of green marsh grass on either side. Now practically obliterated by erosion, Red Bank, located on the farm presently owned by Bruce Pigot, was the favorite Indian camping ground in the Mount Stewart area. There during the 1870's, as many as 15 wigwams were located. Ridges marking the location of the kitchen "middens" or garbage heaps could be seen until 1969, when bulldozing operations connected with the installation of the village sewer system erased that potentially fruitful field fro archaeological investigation forever Recollections of the community life at Red bank are remarkable scare. There is the story of "Cold Friday" when the temperature dropped so low that the Indians forsook their wigwams and sought refuge in the warmer dwellings of Mount Stewart. There were also stories of the fishing expertise of the Micmacs, of how the white men would fish all day and catch nothing, and then at the proper moment, an Indian would emerge, from his tent and cast his line, and promptly draw in a fat trout for supper. The camp was abandoned around 1902.

Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island Mount Stewart, a village, is located in Queens County in the central portion of Prince Edward Island, SW. of Morell. Its precise location is 46'22"N, 62'52"W. John Stewart of Mount Stewart By Author: Frank Pigot
Excerpts from Frank Pigots Book: printed 1973 John Stewart 1757 - 1834 ~ Where Mount Stewart takes its namesake.
In mid November of the year 1775, invested in howling gales and swirling eddies of snow, the immigrant ship "Elizabeth" was foundering on a sand bar at the entrance to Malpeque Bay. The situation was oddly appropriate as, among its passengers, the ill stared vessel numbered one of the most tempestuous figures ever to agitate the political life of Prince Edward Island. There is, indeed, evidence to suggest that John Stewart, then a youth of sixteen or thereabouts, had already begun to display indications of that volatile temperament which was eventually to win for him the appellation of "Hell Fire Jack" .According to Thomas Curtis, a passenger on board the "Elizabeth", "one of Judge Stewart's sons and Thos. James Townsend servant being on the main deck quarreling about some little frivolous affair they came from words to blows". ( footnote: Curtis, Thomas. Voyage to the Island of St. John's. In Harvey, D.C> ed. Journeys to the Island of St. John. Toronto, Macmillan, 1955, p. 23.

A Brief History of Prince Edward Island Prince Edward Island is a tiny, crescent shaped island, measuring 224 kilometers from tip to tip. It's gently rolling land runs between sea level to it's highest elevation of 450 feet. Summer day time temperatures range from 20 to 32 degrees C. (70 to 90 degrees F) Low humidity and a cool breeze makes perfect shirt sleeve weather. Winter temperatures range from -3 to -11 degrees C. (26 to 11 degrees F) Perfect conditions for a variety of winter sports. The Provincial Motto is: Parva Sub Ingenti (The small under the protection of the great). Canada's smallest province has a rich and wonderful history that has molded the culture we share today. The Mi'kmaq were the first people to inhabit Prince Edward Island. They were a peaceful tribe, belonging to the Algonkian group. Not having permanent villages, they camped and fished along the shores during the summer. In the winter, they retreated into the forest where there was shelter, and hunted animals for food and clothing. The Mi'kmaq first called the Island Minegoo , and later changed the name to Abegweit , meaning "cradled on the waves." According to Mi'kmaq legend, Glooscap (the Indian God) wanted a cheerful place to go for his holidays, so he painted the rocks and earth of Abegweit a bright and cheerful red and set it among the brilliant blue waves of the Northumberland Strait.

How it all began... The first car appeared on the island in 1905, and raised such a ruckus that a law was passed in 1908 outlawing the operation of any motor vehicle. Automobiles were strictly illegal on PEI until 1913! At that point, owners paid a $5 registration fee and the markers were provided by the owner. The marker carried the registration number and "PEI". The example shown here, #11, was registered to a McLaughlin Touring that was driven across Canada by George A. B. MacDonald - a remarkable feat in those days! It is not clear when the province started issuing the license plates; actual examples point to around 1915-16 as shown at left. But with so few examples surviving in the absence of any provincial records we probably will never know for sure. Plates were not dated until 1923, and up until that point, were made of various materials and color coded to the year, much like Quebec. Needless to say, because of the small population, registration figures remained much lower than any other province save for Newfoundland (which didn't become a province until 1949). Early PEI plates are very hard to find today.
