Charlottetown is best known as "The Birthplace of Confederation" and the home of "Anne of Green Gables – the Musical™"
With a population of just over 35,000, Charlottetown has the ambiance of a small town rich in history. The Victorian era is still evident today in our architecture, preserved homes and heritage streetscapes.
As the largest city on the Island, we offer a variety of accommodations, a wide selection of restaurants, seafood galore, entertainment and nightlife, boutique shopping and outdoor activities.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the year of incorporation for The City of Charlottetown. Festivities and celebrations will be taking place all year long to commemorate this important date in our history.
The Big Easy/ Big Hurt/ Big Heart/ Fundraiser.
The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina continues to cause enormous havoc down south, sparking a worldwide response. The Prince Edward Island music community has once again answered a call for support. Prince Edward Island, Canadian Political Geography
Related Category: Canadian Political Geography The Micmac lived on the island before Europeans arrived. Jacques Cartier wrote enthusiastically about it after landing there in 1534. Samuel de Champlain named it Ile St. Jean in 1603, and it was known by that name (or Isle St. John) until 1799, when it was renamed after Edward, duke of Kent, who later fathered Queen Victoria . The first permanent settlement was made by the French in 1719 near present-day Charlottetown, but the British gained control under the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Many French settlers were deported by the British (see Acadia ), but others remained; their descendants still live here. In 1803, Lord Selkirk's first colony of impoverished Scots settled here; persons of Scottish extraction now constitute about one third of the inhabitants. In 1763, Prince Edward Island was annexed to Nova Scotia, but it became a separate colony in 1769. Responsible, or cabinet, government was granted in 1851. In 1864 delegates from the Maritime Provinces met in Charlottetown to discuss union : the first step toward forming the Canadian confederation, which was achieved in 1867. However, Prince Edward Island did not join the confederation until 1873. Throughout the 20th cent. the island's economy was relatively stable, although lack of energy and technology caused it to lag behind the rest of Canada.

The Founding of Cavendish, Prince Edward Island This account is taken from the book "Cavendish - Its History, Its People, Its Founding Families - Simpsons McNeills Clarks and their Kin" by Harold H. Simpson. I have taken the liberty of taking Chapters 5 and 6 from this book to enable me to show something of settlement life on Prince Edward Island. Should I ever manage to get permission I'd like to add the whole book as it gives a really excellent account of a newly settled land progressing to become a community and then developing up through to the present. A truly excellent read. Chapter 5
THE FOUNDING OF CAVENDISH, 1790
Before we proceed with the facts we think the reader will enjoy a bit of semi-fiction. To appreciate the quotation which follows, turn back to the last paragraph of the preceding chapter and let your mind go back to the carefully documented story of William and Janet Winchester Simpson and their family over more than half a century. Now for the fictional founding of Cavendish - an instance of unresearched folklore accepted as fact: "In writing a record of the Clark family in America, as I have been asked to do by members of the family, I admit that what is here recorded was secured from older members of the family, now deceased, and from people living in the neighborhood, of how the family lived for close to one hundred and fifty years. Therefore I record the story here as legend but will, nevertheless, try to put in writing what has been handed down from father to son through 8everal generations.

The Atlas of Canada. In 1748, there was a population of 700, which rose very quickly to 5,000 when the Acadians were expelled from Nova Scotia in 1755. Three years later, in 1758, the British expelled most of the Acadian population. The land was given to former British soldiers in 1767, and the island became an independent colony in 1769. Thereafter, the population grew rapidly, reaching 62,000 in 1850 as a result of a wave of immigration from the British Isles. The name "Prince Edward Island" was adopted in 1799. The island became a Canadian province in 1873. Researchers interested in ancestors who lived in Prince Edward Island use the main types of genealogical sources. This province has a unique general index by surname, the Master Name Index , on catalogue cards with references from various sources (census records, registers, passenger lists and newspapers). Echoes From the Past Prince Edward Island National Park is steeped with a rich and diverse human history. The park's central theme of "The Sea, People and the Changing Landscape" represents the earliest Aboriginal people to live on Prince Edward Island to the French, Acadian, Scottish, Irish and English settlers who followed, who have all had an inseparable relationship with the land and the sea.
Mi'kmaq in traditional clothing Early Aboriginal people represent the first cultural group to inhabit Prince Edward Island. They relied entirely upon the riches of the land and sea for their survival and prosperity. When Europeans first began to visit and later settle on Prince Edward Island, they were greeted by the Mi'kmaq, who lived in harmony with the land and sea and continue to live on Prince Edward Island to this very day. Archaeological digs in the park have found traces left by the major cultures that have existed on Prince Edward Island over the past 10 000 years.

History
The University Fencing Club dates back to the academic year 1967/68 when a newly hired faculty member at Prince of Wales College (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) was encouraged by Athletic Director, Earl Nicholson, to found a club for the student body. Prof. Lothar Zimmermann had learned to love the sport during his student days at McMaster University and the University of Toronto. Arriving in Charlottetown, he wanted to continue to fence. To do that, he had to create opponents for himself by teaching others the sport of fencing. And he is still at it today, 35 years later! Upon the merger of Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan's University, the PWC Fencing Club became the U.P.E.I. Fencing Club. Over the years, membership has grown and changed. And so have the facilities, the equipment, and the rules of the sport itself. The Club ‹ as the only fencing centre on the Island ‹ became the P.E.I. Fencing Association, and as such, was accepted within the national body, today's Canadian Fencing Federation. More by accident than by design, the Club accepted also members from outside the University community. "The Duellist" Since 1989, PEI fencers have their own annual illustrated news magazine which offers a review of the past season, including results and statistics, archival material, cartoons, information regarding upcoming events, or merely interesting reading material concerning the sport.

The first House of Assembly was elected on 4 July 1773 and consisted of 18 members. The Assembly increased to 24 members elected in 4 dual member constituencies in each of the three counties. The Assembly was further expanded to 30 members elected in 5 dual member districts in each of the three counties. My Prince Edward Island Family History Home A Brief Family History Favourite Family Photos MacKinnon Family ... Guestbook Welcome to our family tree! Some families know a great deal about their roots; others know very little. I knew practically nothing as my father never knew his paternal family until a couple of years ago. Now he has found his wonderful sister Sherry, brother Gary and Aunt Marlene and knows his family at last! This site is an attempt to record what I've learned about our family history. In these modern times, families tend to be scattered all over the country, if not the world. One of the goals of this web site is to help our family stay connected even though we live far apart. I've delayed releasing this website for several months as very little of the research is my own. I have found many cousins through my other website, which I have researched myself, so thought it a good idea to publish this branch of my tree also. Most of this information was obtained from talking to living relatives and other distant cousins that I bumped into during my research. The only information I have provided myself is that of my immediate family. The rest has been provided by other newly found cousins who have spent years researching the family. In the course of doing this research, I've discovered that I have many more relatives than I ever thought possible and I am extremely grateful for everyones help!
