1. Alexander McDonald Family

The House was built in 1895 by Alexander McDonald, a wealthy businessman and one time president of Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller. Originally from Scotland, McDonald left his native home to seek his fame and fortune and eventually landed in Cincinnati, Ohio. He became director of numerous companies, including several successful rail-lines, mining companies and the Third National Bank. He was also active in charities and philanthropy. His salaries and investments from a number of these posts allowed him to amass a considerable personal fortune.

2. The Building of Dalvay
It was on one of these vacations that Alexander McDonald and his family spent their first summer on Prince Edward Island. After a few days in Charlottetown they moved on to the old Acadian Hotel in Tracadie. (Since destroyed by fire.) McDonald became so intrigued with the area that he contracted George Longworth, a leading island businessman, to act as his agent on P.E.I. They bought 120 acres of land on the north shore, which included a variety of cleared farmland and forested area.
Building was underway in late 1895. He named the house "Dalvay" after his boyhood home. Construction of Dalvay was said to have run close to $50,000. Local building materials were used exclusively in the construction of Dalvay. The lower half of the house was built with Island Sandstone in its natural boulder form and the huge fireplaces were also constructed with quarried blocks of the famous reddish sandstone.

Land
One of the four Atlantic Provinces, Prince Edward Island is also Canada's smallest province in both area and population. The crescent-shaped island is 224 kilometres in length and ranges in width from 6 to 64 kilometres, giving it a total area of 5 660 km2. It lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, separated from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick by Northumberland Strait. Its highest point is 152 metres above sea level. The province has numerous lakes and rivers, most of which are quite small. Rich soil and a temperate climate make Prince Edward Island an ideal place for mixed farming. Half of its land is under cultivation, earning it the nickname "the Garden Province." It is renowned for its red soil, sand dunes and 800 kilometres of beaches.
History
Prince Edward Island was called "Abegweit" by the Micmac Indians, who lived there for some 2 000 years before the arrival of the Europeans. The name means "lying down flat," but is freely translated as "cradled by the waves." There is evidence that the ancestors of the Micmacs lived on the island 10 000 years ago, presumably having migrated across the low plain now covered by Northumberland Strait. The Europeans discovered the island when Jacques Cartier landed there in 1534; he described it as "the most beautiful stretch of land imaginable." In spite of his enthusiastic description, it was a long time before the island was settled. No permanent colony existed until the French established one in 1719; thirty years later, the population numbered a mere 700.

The Kensington area of P.E.I. has a rich and vibrant history to share, full of tales about taverns, trains, and tradesmen. Founded at the crossing of five roads, the town began with an inn for tired travellers. Developing rapidly after the opening of the railway in 1875, the bustling transportation hub grew into a prosperous community, fuelled by the abundant farming and fishing of the outlying areas. This site is a virtual museum aimed at presenting the history of Kensington and its surrounding districts. It has been designed to meet the needs of a wide and varied audience, presenting pictures and stories about the railway, agriculture, the fishery, and town merchants. Mission Statement The University of Prince Edward Island, founded on a tradition of liberal education, exists to encourage and assist people to acquire the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary for critical and creative thinking, and thus prepare them to contribute to their own betterment and that of society through the development of their full potential. History Program History has been defined as the "memory of human group experience" because it brings the student into contact with the whole range of human effort and achievement. Its object is to recreate the past from the evidence left to us, and to try to explain how and why human beings spoke, acted, and thought as they did in the past. Although history must always deal with the 'facts' of societies, it is even more concerned with explaining and illuminating them. The program is centred broadly on the history of "Atlantic Civilization" the historical development of Europe and the Americas. The courses aim to provide both a broad exposure to the history of the Atlantic World, and more specialized work in the history of various regions and countries. The Department also offers courses in the practice and the craft of history.

In 1986 the Association of Nurses of Prince Edward Island voted unanimously at its annual meeting to accept the Canadian Nurses Association resolution to have a baccalaureate degree in nursing as the minimum requirement for entry into the practice of nursing by the year 2000. In 1986-87 a study was conducted by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission on the feasibility of a baccalaureate program in nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island, (Fraser-Davey, 1987) and in 1988 a second study was conducted by the Provincial Hospital and Health Services Commission to examine the cost and needs of nursing education within the province (MacIntosh, 1988). (These reports are available on site for review.) In October, 1988 the Prince Edward Island Provincial Executive Council approved the recommendations of these reports in principle and in November, publicly announced its approval of establishing a baccalaureate program in nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island. Nursing education had begun in Prince Edward Island in 1891 with the establishment of the Prince Edward Island Hospital School of Nursing in Charlottetown. Two other hospital schools of nursing soon followed: the Prince County Hospital School of Nursing, in Summerside, in 1912, and the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing, in 1920. These three diploma schools continued to provide separate programs of nursing education until 1969 when they were amalgamated to form the Prince Edward Island School of Nursing. That program ceased with the graduation of the final class of students in June, 1994.
