The Hillsborough (East) River is typical of many prince edward island waterways, geography of Settlement and Agriculture in prince edward island.
http://www.chrs.ca/Rivers/Hillsborough/Hillsborough-F_e.htm
Human populations originating from various European sources over the past 275 years, adapted well to the diversity of an estuarine waterway. Attracted to its life sustaining qualities, humans have at various times harvested oysters, quahogs and mussels; dyked and harvested wetlands; played in and along the river; built large sailing vessels; and used it as a link to local and foreign shores. Geography
The landscape is flat to gently rolling. The highest watershed point is only 250 feet in an area renowned for its fresh water supply from ground springs. From Charlottetown to Glenfinnan Island is a very wide estuary, narrowing to roughly 1/2 km in width at this 5.6 ha island 10 km from Charlottetown. The river narrows a second time at Mt. Stewart to several metres. Fed by many springs it is only a few metres wide in the Cherry Hill area. Back to top Natural Heritage
The Hillsborough drainage basin may be the wetland capital of PEI. Salt, brine and freshwater marsh provide a variety of habitat for wildlife. Waterfowl abound among the wetlands. It is home to muskrat and fox, which combined, make up 80% of all trapped species. Other details of interest include the 57 rare vascular plants within the watershed (25 are, not surprisingly, wetland species) and the presence of several shore bird species on the extensive tidal flats. A variety of salt and fresh water fish inhabit the waterway including brook trout, striped bass, smelt, mackerel and eel.

When Jacques Cartier came ashore in 1534, Indians had lived on Abegweit, meaning "cradled on the waves," for 10,000 years. Surprisingly warm waves wash its beaches, and the island's population increases fivefold in summer. Visitors enjoy Victorian villages, tidy farmsteads, and lobster suppers in steepled churches. Manicured Charlottetown, site of the 1864 meeting that led to Canada's union, draws thousands to its annual arts festival. Text source: National Geographic Atlas of the World, Eighth Edition, Area

A river in miniature, its personality is formed by the mixing of Prince Edward Island's rich agricultural heritage with the inescapable presence of the sea. Prince Edward Island was densely wooded with oak, maple, and giant white pine when it was the quiet domain of the Mi'kmaq natives. The natural harbour formed by the mouth of the Hillsborough River became the logging basin when the island's forests were stripped by early British settlers. Half of the river's length is an ocean estuary in which fresh water and saltwater blend to create a rich marshland habitat for fish and birds. For three-quarters of its entire length, the level of the Hillsborough rises and falls under the influence of the ocean tides. Nowhere does the river empty directly into the sea. Instead, it dissolves softly into the seawater of Charlottetown Harbour.

    Hillsborough River - Timeless Timber
The original forest of Prince Edward Island
To its first European settlers, Prince Edward Island was a land of interminable virgin forest with a fringe of beaches and salt marshes. It was a mature forest with immense trees over 200 years old. By the time Europeans arrived, this forest was decreasing only slightly due to disease, advanced age, and wind damage. Today, a small vestige of Prince Edward Island's original forest remains at Royalty Oaks, on the outskirts of Charlottetown on the Hillsborough River. During the 17th century, the Mi'kmaq living near the Hillsborough River valley gathered dead wood to heat their wigwam homes. They collected white spruce rootlets for sewing and stitching, notched sugar maples for sap collection, and used cedar and ash to manufacture weapons and tools. The Mi'kmaq also used medicinal herbs and consumed forest foods. No matter how diverse was their use of trees, the Native impact on the forest was slight since they were hunters and gatherers who did not use metal tools. The Hillsborough River is Prince Edward Island's only waterway big enough for large ships. This feature has made the Hillsborough River an important place for shipping timber to Great Britain. Shipwrights who immigrated from Britain to Prince Edward Island made wooden sailing ships on the riverbanks.
